    Scroller finished & implemented :)

    I noticed that the content of Episode Plot sections, are wrapperd in this code:

    {| style="clear:both;margin:1px auto; font-size:normal; text-align:left; width:645px; " class="toccolours collapsible collapsed" align="center"
    |-
    |

    --Actual content--

    |}

    From what I gathered, In the past it has been used as part of spoiler warning code that hid the plot content, but it has been removed since, so right now it does nothing except constrict the section horizontally and center it. (which we don't use anywhere else on the wiki)

    Can we remove it?

    • I think we should get rid of the table code, but keep the "Scroll-1". (Btw, why is the template called "Scroll-1" and not just "Scroll"?)

    • Btw, why is the template called "Scroll-1" and not just "Scroll"?

      Probably the Arthur copied it from another wiki (I sometimes reuse complicated templates I wrote before elsewhere) If you want I can rename it a long the way.

      Also while on the topic, I only use classic editor, but I seem to recall that the visual editor had problems with such templates. It would turn the whole section into that green icon, and editing long text using wikia interface was uncomfortable to say the least. If you wish, I can switch this template to Template:Vscroll_begin.

      It should work the same (just with one green icon before and after) and used similarly. Instead of:

      {{Scroll-1|
      Content...
      Content...
      Content...
      }}

      You would use:

      {{vscroll begin}}
      Content...
      Content...
      Content...
      {{vscroll end}}

    • The code does seem to be excessive, so maybe it's a good idea to get rid of it to avoid cluttered coding.

      In terms of the scroller, I think it has been like that since before I came onto this wikia, potentially a template copied by the original creator.  Personally I don't have any problems with the green puzzlepiece, as I just switch to source mode in that case (which makes it easier to link stuff anyways). But if people from the community are bothered by it, we could consider changing it.

    • I only use the source editor, so Scroll-1 vs Vscroll makes virtually no difference to me.

      If Scroll-1 is keeping users from editing, where vscroll would make it more accessible for new users, then switch for accessibility. Sometimes a random reader spots an error or would like to add to the plot, but if editing requires extra steps (e.g. knowing to click on the puzzle piece, wiki markup, etc.) they just let it go.

      I agree. But I also know there's people who're fine witht he puzzle piece because of the scrolling they'd have to do if that wasn't there (when they're editing anything else but the plot). So it's a matter of weighing pros and cons at this point...

    • I just turned on the wikia default editor for the first time in years, and let me just say it looks much better! I usually rant about their features (mostly social), but I have to give it to them on this one and portable infoboxes are great.

      Anyway, it looks like the green tiles I remembered are no longer there, and you see the page as it appears normally. However, unlike the all the other templates on Pilot with Scroll-1 you can't actually edit its content by double click it (illustration, unless you happen to know where the source editor option is hiding in advance.

      And since changing to Vscroll will change nothing visually in neither wikia default editor nor source editor. I agree with Janus100 that it would be best to switch to it.

      Edit: I finally stumbled on the green puzzle piece. I don't think that it works well with very long texts (illustration). I don't think we should hide content making it harder to edit, just so we can scroll more freely. When we can always use section edit.

    • Agreed on the argument of section edits.

    • I have added {{Vscroll begin}} and {{Vscroll end}} (using the same style from scroll1 minus cleanup), and updated Earth_Skills#Plot with all the above suggested changes. So you guys can review it.

      If ok, I'd make this happen everywhere else.

    • Looks good to me, but it'd like to see more other people's opinions before I give you the green light, Bugthe.

      Also, sorry for the late reply. For some reason I unfollowed this discussion accidentally.

    • I, a source editor user, have no issues with the changes.

    • Well it's been a while since we've discussed this, and there haven't really been much other opinions, so I think we can go ahead and make the change to the new scroller.

      If anyone needs a TemplateGate for this, ask so on my message wall please (that way I can keep a good overview of who I've given a templategate to). Thanks :)

    • This both fantastic and ackward at the same time. Since I already went ahead and made the change on the episode pages, when I addressed Skyzy concern couple of days afterwards, and up until now I was certain that posted a note about it.. This is why I have all that notes\reminders spam on my page, because between life, work and all the stuff here we tend to let things fall between the cracks for a month or two ;)

      So you're saying you've already updated to the new scroller, and you forgot to mention it here? Is that it.

      Also I'm not sure how Skyzy's concern comes in to all of this.

    • Yeah pretty much. The new scroll template featured in post #9, has been applied to the plot section of all episode pages, as shown in the proof of concept. The 40+ consecutive edits were hard to miss for those following Special:RecentChanges and fixed capitalization as well.

      However, Scroll-1 is still widely used on other pages, mainly for quote section. If you want I can change all instances in which we use Scroll-1 to Vscroll.

    • Yeah sorry it's summer break so I don't always check recent changes. When it's good editors I trust that the edits are valuable and/or communicated through. I wish there was a message on this forum for it, that way I couldn't have missed it.

      But yes, you can go ahead and do that now. Since it's already halfway done anyways.

    • Bugthe, were you able to apply the new scroller on the rest of the places where it hadn't been done yet?

        Loading editor
    • "Scroll-1", the old scroller, is still being used 80+ times (about 70 times in main namespace).

      I noticed CreateElements used the scroller in her/his comments. That means, either those comments need to be edited to remove/replace the scroller (this can only be done by CreateElements or an admin) or template Scroll-1 cannot be deleted even when removed from everywhere else.

        Loading editor
    • Thanks for the update Janus.

      I will contact former Admin CreateElements, and if I don't get a reply I will modify those comments. When I have some time off next week I will help further replacing the scroller with you guys :)

    • No one likes to see the Special:RecentChanges spammed with edits, so I try to do them in bulk*. So not yet, but I am planning to. Btw we don't have to delete the other template or replace it on every comment.

      *I always mark them as minor edits so you guys can use hide minor to screen them, a bot a count would have been more appropriate but I am lazy.

      Finally done, I replaced all instances on our articles (main namespace). Sorry it took so long, I just could fire up AWB before.

    • I've removed the scroller from all the remaining pages. I just asked Amethystkitten to remove the final one on her sandbox, and then all should be removed :)

    • I believe this comment is the last scroll-1 use.

      I think Scroll-1 should be deleted to prevent users from accidentally using it instead of the preferred vscroll templates.

      Ah, I missed that one. Thanks for pointing it out :)

      Yes, removing the template does seem like a good idea. I'll go ahead and do that now then.
