It's okay. She's friendly.
Russell to Clarke about Picasso [src]

Picasso[1][2] is a golden retriever dog, formerly owned by Russell Lightbourne.

She is now owned by Clarke Griffin

Early life

Picasso was born in Sanctum. She is either descendant of dog embryos brought to the new world on Eligius III or was herself an embryo brought by Eligius III. She is owned and cared for by Russell Lightbourne.

After the overthrow of the Primes, Picasso is adopted by Clarke Griffin and Madi.

Throughout the Series

In The Children of Gabriel, she runs up to Clarke and sniffs her. Clarke is startled and scared, for she has never met a dog in person before. Russell throws a ball for her to fetch. Russell also mentions that Picasso knew Clarke and Wonkru had arrived on Sanctum before he knew.

Later at dinner, Russell feeds Picasso table food.

In From the Ashes, Picasso is adopted by Clarke and Madi to Madi's delight. Madi later plays with Picasso in the yard.

That night, Picasso is lying under a chair when there's an explosion. Looking up for a moment, Picasso lays her head back down again almost immediately, apparently unconcerned.

In A Little Sacrifice, Picasso is in the tavern with Madi when Sheidheda enters. Apparently recognizing that the Dark Commander is not her former master despite using Russell's body, Picasso growls at him. The Dark Commander gives the dog a friendly pet before threatening to feed Picasso the hearts of everyone Madi loves if she doesn't kneel before him.

In Blood Giant, Picasso is in the reactor room with the massacre survivors and Madi begins petting her. After Madi gets Luca to join in, Lee protests that Russell wouldn't want one of the Children of Gabriel to pet his dog. However, Madi recognizes that the young boy wants to pet her too and gets Lee to join in. Lee guesses that Picasso is hungry too and Madi leaves to speak to the adults. Later, Picasso begins barking, when three Wonkru members tries to break into the reactor room.

In A Sort of Homecoming, after Clarke strands her group on a regenerated Earth, Madi tells her that her life was on Sanctum and mentions Luca and Picasso as her friends that she left behind.

In The Last War, Clarke returns to Sanctum after humanity achieves Transcendence and calls out for her friends. Picasso responds and runs to her. Clarke takes Picasso back to Earth with her and the dog joins Clarke and her friends, who chose to return to human form, in settling down on the planet. While Clarke is talking with the Judge, Picasso runs over to Murphy who plays with her briefly before noticing Clarke's presence.

Russell Lightbourne mentions that she is a very friendly. She is seen to immediately run up to greet Clarke Griffin with her tail wagging. Picasso is also playful and enjoys playing fetch.

Picasso is from a breed of Golden Retrievers. Her fur is long, straight, and gold in color. She has a trim build and roundish ears folded downward.

Relationships

Russell Lightbourne

Russell owns Picasso and appears to deeply care for her. Picasso is eager for his attention and loves playing fetch with him.

Picasso appears to be able to tell the difference between Russell and Sheidheda immediately despite the Dark Commander using Russell's body as she begins growling when he enters the tavern to threaten Madi.

Clarke Griffin

When she first met Clarke, Picasso was friendly towards her. Later, Clarke owns Picasso, who happily meets Madi Griffin, as the three of them form a friendship.

Notes and Trivia

  • She is the first and only dog to ever appear in The 100.
  • She is the second named animal in the series, after Helios.
  • Russell loves dogs and is disappointed that they did not survive the Nuclear Apocalypse, stating "I suppose I had hope for man's best friend.".
    • This is despite a negative childhood incident: when Russell was a young boy on Earth, one of his family's dogs attacked him and his baby sister, resulting in her death two days later.
  • Jason Rothenberg revealed the dog's name is "Picasso," though he was unsure if that was the name of the fictional dog, the real-life dog actor, or both. As he put it, "I can't remember if his name in the show is Picasso or if his real name is Picasso… we can say it is both."[3] So far, no name has been stated in the episodes.
    • One of the writers says that Picasso is their favorite character.[4]
    • The dog's name is confirmed in the episode, "From the Ashes".
  • Picasso returned in Season Seven.[5]
  • Along with Clarke Griffin, Picasso is the only other alive character who did not transcend.
