What the hell? Let's be good guys.
— Murphy to Bellamy and Raven [src]

Jonathan "John" Murphy[1] is a major character in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh seasons, after appearing as a recurring character in the first and second seasons. He is portrayed by starring cast member Richard Harmon and debuts in the series premiere.

Murphy is part of the original 100 juvenile delinquents from the Ark. The 100 were viewed as "expendable" and were sent down to Earth to see if it was survivable. On Earth, Murphy was Bellamy Blake's second-in-command until Wells Jaha's murder. He is accused of murdering Wells and the delinquents attempt to hang him until Charlotte confesses to being his true killer. After trying to execute Charlotte in revenge, Murphy is banished from the Camp. He is captured and tortured by Grounders before they let him escape. He returns to the Camp unknowingly infected with hemorrhagic fever, spreading it to many of the delinquents. He kills Connor and Myles for their participation in the attempted hanging. He also tries to hang Bellamy and shoots Raven Reyes before escaping the Camp and getting recaptured by Grounders.

In Season Two, Murphy is eventually reunited with the remaining delinquents upon returning to the Camp. He ends up going with Finn Collins to Tondc in search of the missing delinquents. As Finn massacres 18 villagers, Murphy makes an unsuccessful attempt to stop him. He decides to join Thelonious Jaha on his journey to the City of Light after feeling unaccepted at Camp Jaha. On the way, Jaha's group meets Emori, and Murphy develops a liking towards her. He and Jaha eventually reach an island, and Jaha leaves an injured Murphy behind to chase after a drone. Murphy discovers a lighthouse bunker from before the nuclear apocalypse and makes himself at home before discovering the previous owner had committed suicide.

After being locked inside the bunker for 86 days, Murphy finds out the truth about A.L.I.E. and escapes from a brainwashed Jaha with Emori. Later, Murphy is taken prisoner and tortured in Polis because he was found with the key to the City of Light. Titus attempts to frame Murphy for fatally shooting Clarke Griffin, however Titus's shot hits Lexa instead. He helps Clarke steal the Flame, before being taken prisoner by Ontari. She abused him and forces him to pretend to be her Flamekeeper. When Jaha gives Ontari the key to the City of Light, Murphy is sent to the dungeons. There, he convinces Indra not to kill Charles Pike and the three escape the dungeons together, making a pact to defeat A.L.I.E. They then save Bellamy and the others. Murphy helps Clarke take the Flame and keeps her alive while she navigated and destroyed the City of Light.

In Season Four, Murphy wants himself and Emori to stay with his people believing that his people now owe him for assisting Clarke with defeating A.L.I.E. However, they leave when Murphy notices the rising conflict with Azgeda. He returns to Arkadia to steal food, but steals medicine for Adria after overhearing Abby and Raven arguing over rations. In an effort to save himself and Emori, he leads an expedition to Becca's Island. When Emori lies about the identity of a man and his distasteful actions, they are both locked up. Once they are released, he apologizes to Raven for shooting her and looks after her during her seizures. Once the Grounders are let into the Second Dawn Bunker and their uncertainty about their survival heightens, so, he and Emori leave with Bellamy and Clarke to get Raven in hopes that they can stay in the lighthouse bunker. They end up going back to the Ark with Bellamy, Raven, Monty, Harper, and Echo.

Murphy spends the next six years on the Ring with Spacekru. Eventually, Murphy gets frustrated with himself for feeling "useless" as he did in Camp Jaha and pushes everyone, including Emori, away. He was the first to notice Eligius IV, and volunteers to stay on the ship with Raven before being brought back down to Earth. Back on the ground and fighting for survival, Murphy finds himself again, and his relationship with Emori is mended. The two capture Paxton McCreary but then make a deal with him and return to the village. Murphy helps a group of Wonkru deserters escape during the fight between McCreary's and Diyoza's factions. He then assists Wonkru in their battles and gets severely shot. With Monty's help, he gets to the Gagarin and spends the next 125 years in cryosleep, until waking up to find a new habitable world.

In Season Six, Murphy is part of the team sent to Sanctum where he finds himself seduced by the promises of immortality for himself and Emori offered by Josephine Lightbourne. Murphy finds himself caught in the middle of the conflict between his friends and the Primes, but after the death of Abby Griffin and Clarke's apparent death, Murphy rejects the Primes to help his friends save the people of Sanctum.

In Season Seven, Murphy is enlisted to continue his ruse as Daniel Lee while suffering from guilt over his role in Abby's death. As Clarke leaves Sanctum in search of their missing friends and Sheidheda returns to power, Murphy assumes a leadership role over those who remain to contest the Dark Commander's rise. Following a return to the regenerated Earth, Murphy continues to advocate for the Sanctumites, Wonkru and the Eligius Prisoners, desiring to move them back to humanity's homeworld where they will be much safer to live out their lives. After Emori dies, Murphy has her consciousness transferred into his own head via her Mind Drive despite it being inevitably fatal to Murphy rather than live the rest of his life without her. Shortly thereafter, both Murphy and Emori achieve Transcendence alongside the rest of the human race apart from Clarke, but join the rest of Clarke's friends in choosing to return to human form to live out the rest of their lives on Earth rather than to remain transcended, so that Clarke will not be alone forever.

Early Life[]

As a boy, John grew up on the Ark with his mother and father, a time he recalls fondly. It is implied in "Join or Die" that he grew up on Farm Station. After he fell ill with the flu, his father Alex stole medicine in desperation to help his son. Captured following his crime, Alex was sentenced and floated, a fate his mother consequently blamed on him. Seeking solace from her pain, his mother began drinking heavily, a path that eventually led to her death. Her last words towards her son blamed him for the death of his father.

Following the death of both parents, the orphaned John was arrested after setting fire to his father's arresting officer's quarters. He was awaiting his review at eighteen along with the other delinquents. However, before the time came, he was sent among the hundred delinquents down to earth to discover whether or not the planet was survivable.

Throughout the Series[]

In Pilot, Murphy is with his friend John Mbege and a group of Delinquents. When he sees Wells Jaha forcibly grab Jasper Jordan Murphy intervenes. Murphy declares that Jasper is one of them while Wells and Clarke Griffin are not. Murphy continues to try and fight Wells. When injured Wells tries to fight back, Finn Collins steps in and tells Murphy to wait until it is a fair fight.

Later Murphy approaches Wells and reveals to Wells that his father begged for mercy before Wells' father floated him. Shortly after, Wells sees Murphy's message: "FIRST SON FIRST TO DYE" carved into the Dropship. Instead of having its desired effect, Wells tells Murphy he spelled "die" wrong. Soon after Bellamy Blake approaches Murphy and tells him if he plans to kill someone it would be best not to announce it. Bellamy convinces both Murphy and Mbege to remove their wristbands by hinting that they can run this place with him. Later that night, Murphy and Mbege help Bellamy ambush Wells and forcibly remove his wristband.

Murphy and another delinquent

In Earth Skills, Murphy's sadistic streak begins to show when he forcibly holds Delinquents' heads over a fire as he removes their wristbands in order to trick those on the Ark to think that they are actually dying. When Wells finds out, he tries to stop Murphy. Murphy and Wells begin fighting again. When Murphy pulls out a knife, Bellamy stops Murphy to give Wells a blade wanting a "fair fight." Eventually, Murphy is defeated by Wells and downed after trading blows. The fight is interrupted by Clarke and the others returning who tell them that Jasper was wounded and taken by Grounders.

Murphy accompanies Bellamy, Wells, Finn, and Clarke as they search for Jasper. While walking through the woods, Murphy asks Bellamy how they got into the rescuing business. Bellamy explains that he's here only for Clarke's wristband. Bellamy states he'll do anything to get it, even if he has to cut her hand off himself. This makes Murphy smile. The group eventually finds Jasper being used as live bait. When the group tries to help him, Clarke triggers a pitfall. Although delayed, Murphy helps pull her to safety. Murphy and Finn cut Jasper down and bring him back to the Camp.

Later, Murphy assists Bellamy with the panther Wells shot and has the Delinquents trade their wristbands for food. When Finn tries to take the food without giving up his wristband, Murphy tries to stop him, however, Finn rebuffs Murphy by saying, "I thought there were no rules." Murphy lets Finn take the food. Soon after, Murphy watches on as Bellamy strings Atom up to a tree for the night as punishment for disobeying his orders.

Earth Kills 077 (Murphy and Bellamy)

Murphy and Bellamy

In Earth Kills, Murphy practices knife throwing with Bellamy until Atom and Jones return from searching for the missing Delinquents, Trina and Pascal. Murphy insists the two are probably in "pound town." Murphy starts teasing Atom with the reminder of what happened to him the night before for kissing Octavia. Bellamy tells the group to keep an eye out for Trina and Pascal while hunting, leaving Murphy to take care of the Camp. Acid Fog forces all the Delinquents at camp to take shelter in the drop ship. Jasper's dying moans keep everyone up most of the night so Murphy decides to finish him off but Octavia and Monty barricade the upper level, preventing him from killing Jasper. Once Bellamy and the others return to the camp the next day, Murphy gets Bellamy angry at him for calling Octavia psychotic.
Murphy's Law 069 (Clarke and Murphy)

Murphy and Clarke

In Murphy's Law, Murphy orders the other Delinquents around the Camp as they build a wall. When one of them, Connor stops and asks for water, he urinates on him. Later after Jasper and Octavia find a knife with initials "J.M." on it near the recently murdered Well's disembodied fingers, Clarke confronts Murphy and accuses him of killing Wells. The other Delinquents decide to "float" Murphy and beat him up and hang him with Bellamy giving the final kick of the bucket from under him. As Murphy is dying, Charlotte steps forward as the real murderer and Clarke grabs Bellamy's ax and cuts Murphy down.

Murphy demands that Charlotte be punished but Bellamy disagrees. Murphy knocks him down with a log and leads a group including John Mbege after Charlotte who escapes with the help of Finn and Clarke. The chase eventually leads to the side of a cliff where Murphy takes Clarke hostage in exchange for Charlotte. Charlotte kills herself by jumping off the cliff and Bellamy goes after Murphy, trying to beat him to death. Clarke stops him and convinces Bellamy to banish Murphy from The Camp instead. When the group is leaving, Finn leaves behind a weapon for Murphy to defend himself with.

In Twilight's Last Gleaming Finn mentions Murphy as a reason to keep quiet when Clarke suggests telling the other Delinquents about the buried bunker they found.

In I Am Become Death Murphy gets tangled in the tripwire outside of the Camp while supposedly running away from the Grounders and is found by Octavia, Connor, and Derek. He tells them he was captured and tortured by Grounders. Clarke confirms he was tortured by his nails being torn off and the cuts and wounds he received. When Bellamy finds out he's back he decides to kill him, but Clarke tells him he could have useful information on the Grounders. Murphy soon begins violently throwing up blood and it is revealed he is carrying a virus. Everyone in the camp starts falling ill and Clarke sends Octavia to Lincoln for a cure. Octavia informs everyone that the Grounders are coming to attack and the sickness is used to weaken the Delinquents.

Clarke falls ill and Murphy gives up his bed for her as he is already beginning to feel better. He assists Clarke and Octavia with helping the others who suffer from the sickness. When mostly everyone has recovered from the virus, Clarke manages to convince Bellamy to allow Murphy to stay. In the drop ship, Murphy checks on a sleeping Raven and smothers Connor with a wet rag while he sleeps, killing him in revenge for hanging him.

In The Calm Murphy is working in the Smokehouse with Octavia, when Del brings in more wood for the fire. Octavia warns Del that they have too much wood but he decides to ignore her warning. Murphy supports Octavia's claim but Del once again ignores them. After the Smokehouse burns down Murphy gets into a fight with Del that is quickly broken up by Bellamy.

In We Are Grounders (Part 1) While Myles is lying injured in the dropship, Murphy sneaks in and quickly smothers him, killing him. Jasper enters and they both look toward the gun with Murphy grabbing it first. He shuts the dropship doors and uses Jasper as a hostage.

Bellamy exchanges himself for Jasper's release and Murphy has Bellamy tie his own noose. Murphy taunts Bellamy and eventually forces him to hang himself. Meanwhile, Raven is under the drop ship floor trying to open the door. When she makes a noise, Murphy fires through the floor, thinking it is Octavia. He wounds Raven but she manages to get the door open anyway and he flees to the upper level. As Bellamy tries to get through the hatch, Murphy uses the Delinquents' gunpowder to blast a hole through the wall and he escapes through the hole with one of Raven's walkie-talkies.

In We Are Grounders (Part 2) Murphy is tied to a tree, having been captured by the Grounders, who are using his radio to listen in on the other Delinquents. He is stabbed in the leg by Tristan for not telling them about the landmines. The Grounders leave Murphy with a guard to watch him while they attack the the Camp.

In The 48, Murphy enters the drop ship after the Grounder who had been guarding him is shot dead by an injured Raven Reyes. Since Murphy is the one that caused her gunshot wound, Raven tries shooting him with her assault rifle, but either the gun jams or there were no bullets left in the gun. When she starts to cough up blood, Murphy tries to help her by rolling her on her side, but Raven is very resistant about receiving help from Murphy. When she asks him why he is helping her, he says he does not want to die alone. As Kane, the Ark Guards, Bellamy, and Finn arrive at the drop ship, Murphy tries to talk down Bellamy, but Bellamy attacks him anyway. Kane arrests Bellamy for assault and Murphy for murder. Kane tells them both that he is in charge now. They are taken away to Camp Jaha.

In Inclement Weather, the Ark Guards bring Murphy into the stockade at Camp Jaha and tie him up across from Bellamy. They are both interrogated by Kane, but this is quickly interrupted by gunshots outside and they are left alone. They soon hear Raven screaming as Abby performs surgery on her without anesthesia. Murphy comments that is how he sounded when the Grounders tortured him for three days. Eventually, Bellamy is freed by Finn, Monroe, and Sterling. Bellamy decides to take Murphy with them because he knows where the Grounder camp is. As the group leaves Camp Jaha, they are greeted by Abby and Sgt. Miller, who give them guns to find the rest of the Delinquents.

Murphy saving Bellamy

In Reapercussions, Murphy, Finn, Bellamy, Monroe, and Sterling arrive at the Grounder camp where Murphy was kept prisoner and scope it out. When Finn sees a Grounder with one eye wearing Clarke's father's watch, they create a plan to ambush them. Murphy is given two rocks to knock together to attract the Grounder's attention. Bellamy sneaks up behind him and knocks the Grounder out. They take the Grounder back to Finn's bunker to interrogate him. After the Grounder draws them a map to the alleged location of the Delinquents, Murphy says there is now no point in keeping him alive but Bellamy disagrees. As they are arguing, Finn executes the Grounder and says they need to continue their mission.

In Many Happy Returns, Murphy and the others come across the wreckage of Factory Station. There is only one survivor, Mel, who is clinging to the side of a cliff. Finn suggests they leave her but Sterling climbs down anyway. The rope Sterling was on comes untied and Sterling plunges to his death with Murphy and Monroe looking on in shock. Bellamy tells everyone to make a new rope. Finn, Murphy, and Monroe hold onto a rope made of belt straps as Bellamy climbs down to save Mel. As they lift Bellamy and Mel up, however, the rope breaks and Murphy is the only one holding Bellamy and Mel up. They are ambushed by Grounders as Finn and Murphy struggle to hold onto the rope. Monroe starts shooting at the Grounders but is soon hit in the thigh with an arrow. A foghorn is heard and the Grounders scatter. They pull Bellamy and Mel to the top and Bellamy looks up to see that it was Octavia who had blown the fog horn and had saved them. Because of Monroe's and Mel's injuries, Bellamy and Octavia decide to take them back to Camp Jaha while Finn continues on to the village where the Delinquents are allegedly being kept. Bellamy allows Murphy to go with Finn and tosses him a gun. Murphy and Finn head off to save their friends.

In Human Trials, Murphy and Finn have arrived at the Grounder village where the Delinquents were supposed to be. They look through the scopes of their rifles and count 26-28 Grounders but no Delinquents. They decide to go in stealth-wise under the cover of darkness but Finn changes the plans and sets their food storage on fire to create a distraction. When they are discovered by the villagers, Finn takes one of them hostage until Nyko steps forward and tells them their leader is not there. They round up all of the villagers into a pen in the center of the village and hold them hostage. While Murphy keeps guard over the villagers, Finn searches for the missing Delinquents. Finn finds a pile of the Delinquents' belongings and confronts the villagers, pinning a woman to the ground with the gun to her head. Murphy tells Finn they are scavengers and their friends are not there and they should go. Finn refuses to believe it because the Grounder with one eye drew them the map. Nyko speaks up and tells them that Delano was cast out of their village and is a liar and thief. Murphy again pleads with Finn to leave. As it seems like they are about to leave, however, an old man panics and leaps out of the pen, fleeing in fear. Finn reacts quickly, shooting him dead and causing more panic among the villagers. Murphy desperately tries to calm him down, trying to grab hold of him and shouting at him to stop, but Finn won't let up. Finn eventually stops when Clarke and the others arrive. Murphy and the others stand and stare in disbelief at what Finn has done.

In Fog of War, two days after the massacre in Tondc, Murphy joins Clarke in the bar area of Camp Jaha. He tells Clarke they were pardoned by The Council. Clarke tells him that she still does not trust him.

In Spacewalker, at Camp Jaha, security has been increased and Major Byrne even gave Murphy a gun. Clarke and Bellamy approach and Finn offers to help with the perimeter security but Bellamy takes him inside. Clarke blames Murphy for what happened at Tondc even though Murphy had tried to stop Finn. He tells Clarke to blame herself since Finn was looking for her.

Later, Bellamy, Raven, and Murphy (by Raven's invitation) arrive at the drop ship and wait for Finn and Clarke. Finn arrives at the drop ship, carrying an unconscious Clarke. Bellamy and Murphy take care of Clarke while Raven tries to comfort Finn. Clarke wakes up and Finn tells her he thought she was dead because of him. Bellamy shouts a warning to them that the Grounders have arrived and they're surrounded. Raven wants to give up Murphy to the Grounders instead of Finn because Murphy was also at the village. Finn steps between Raven and Murphy and tells them they need to stay and defend the dropship. He instructs Murphy to go upstairs and watch the back while he takes the lower level of the drop shop and Bellamy, Raven, and Clarke will take the front gate. Finn steps out in front of them and surrenders himself to the Grounders.

In Survival of the Fittest, Indra arrives at Camp Jaha with her warriors to train with the Sky People. While Marcus Kane is giving a speech about how this is a chance for the Grounders and Sky People to work together against the Mountain Men, Penn starts accusing Murphy in Trigedasleng for being at the massacre in Tondc and not doing anything. Murphy tells him he doesn't speak "Grounder" and the two get in each other's faces. Kane gives Murphy two days of work detail and tells him to apologize to Penn. Murphy refuses and Penn tells him he's going to burn like Finn. Murphy swings a punch and everyone starts fighting, with Octavia and Kane trying to break it up while Jaha watches smugly. Later, Murphy is busy mopping floors when Jaha tells him he got him off work detail because he wants Murphy to take Jaha to Wells' grave at the dropship and hands Murphy a gun.

Jaha and Murphy are walking through the forest on their way back to the dropship and Jaha tells Murphy he remembers his father; he remembers everyone he floated. Murphy leads him to the graveyard. Jaha has a moment over his son's grave and asks Murphy how well he knew him. Murphy tells him the truth about how Charlotte killed Wells because she could not kill Jaha. Jaha tells Murphy they'll rest at the drop ship for a while. In the drop ship, Jaha tells Murphy that he deserves a second chance and that "good can come out of even the darkest acts." Jaha tells him how they are similar and are both outcasts by their own people. He tells Murphy about the City of Light and how he wants to find it and lead his people home. Later, Murphy awakens to find a group of people outside the drop ship. Jaha had invited them to come with him to find the City of Light and now Jaha wants Murphy to join them.

In Rubicon, Murphy is in the Dead Zone with Jaha and his followers as Jaha tries to find where he crashed down. They spot what looks to be an abandoned cart and go over to investigate it. A Grounder pops out and threatens them. Jaha offers to help her with her cart. The Grounder, Emori, tells a tale about how she and her brother were on the way to the City of Light when they were attacked and he was killed. Murphy offers Emori some water and she tells them she can get them to the City of Light if they pull her cart. She thanks Murphy for the water. Emori tells him she was kicked out of her clan and Murphy tells her he is there because he killed two people and tried to kill two more. Emori removes the glove covering her left hand and shows her deformity. Murphy calls it "bad ass."

EmoriAndMurphy212

Emori threatens to kill Murphy

Later, Murphy is helping Emori with her cart when a rider appears, aiming a rocket launcher at them. Emori takes Murphy hostage and tells them to put all their supplies on the cart or they will all die. Jaha tries to convince them to work together but Emori tells them to back away from the cart and get on their knees. She whispers something into Murphy's ear before she knocks him out. When Murphy awakens, he tells them that Emori had told him the City of Light was due north before she knocked him out. Jaha tells the rest of the group they have a choice to make. They can either continue on with him and Murphy to the north or they can return to Camp Jaha. Half of them turn back.

In Bodyguard of Lies, Jaha is leading Murphy and four others through the Dead Zone as they search for the City of Light. Harris is telling cheesy bar jokes about Grounders, Reapers, Mountain Men, and Arkers when he suddenly explodes, knocking everyone off their feet. Another person in their group scrambles away in terror and she quickly blows up, too. Jaha realizes they've walked into the middle of an unmarked mine field. They have to wait for a sandstorm to clear while they sit in the middle of the mine field. Once the sand stops blowing, they see all of the footprints are gone. Jaha spots a glow from the sunlight reflecting off something in the distance and they believe they are getting closer to the City of Light. Jaha slowly makes his way through the minefield using his cane to detect the mines. Murphy, Craig, and Richards follow behind in Jaha's footsteps as they slowly inch their way closer to the presumed City of Light. Richards gets impatient and takes off running toward it before Jaha tackles him inches away from stepping on another landmine, saving his life.

When they finally make it to the end of the minefield, they spot the sign warning of said mine field on the other end. They begin climbing the sand dunes, trying to get to the City of Light only to discover it is a giant solar panel farm. Murphy is disgusted that there is nothing there but Jaha refuses to believe that is it. Jaha contemplates why all of the solar panels are still fine when the rest of the world is broken. Murphy says he can fix that as he throws a rock at one of the solar panels, breaking some glass. A drone suddenly flies out and pauses in front of them before taking off across the shore of a sea where a boat is conveniently waiting for them. Jaha tells them they are going to follow the drone and all four of them get in the boat and start rowing after the drone.

In Blood Must Have Blood (Part 2), Jaha, Murphy, Craig, and Richards are rowing across a sea in search of the City of Light. Craig stops rowing in frustration that they're not even sure where they're going. Richards suddenly spots land in the distance and they cheer. Their boat is suddenly knocked by something beneath the water, tossing Richards into the water. As Murphy tries to help him, a creature grabs Richards and drags him underneath the water, injuring Murphy in the process. Craig starts to freak out as Jaha yells at him to row. Murphy tells Jaha he can row just as Jaha tosses Craig into the water to the sea creature and the sea creature swallows him whole. Jaha tells Murphy he did it because Murphy can row.

Jaha and Murphy have finally reached the shore. Jaha offers Murphy help and Murphy tells him he doesn't want anything from him because of what Jaha did to Craig. Murphy tells him he's a survivor and is done following Jaha. A drone appears and Murphy tells Jaha to go chase the drone. Jaha promises to come back for Murphy before taking off after the drone. Murphy awakens the next morning to see a lighthouse. He walks up to it and uncovers a solar panel causing music to start playing inside the lighthouse. Murphy goes to investigate, finding his way inside what appears to be a fully stocked bunker. He helps himself to some MREs and liquor, enjoying his "promised land." He finds a TV and pushes play. A home movie shot on 5/10/2052 in the same bunker appears onscreen. Murphy watches as the man explains how he lost control and how "she" got the launch codes. He apologizes before shooting himself dead.

In Wanheda (Part 1), The bunker that Murphy had previously found on island becomes a prison when the doors lock. He tries opening the doors through many different methods, including ramming heavy objects into them but they remain sealed. He watches numerous A.L.I.E. videos and dumps alcohol on his head as his mental health starts to deteriorate. On day 86, when he's on his last box of food, he makes a video to Jaha in which he remarks that if Jaha sees the video, it means he's not dead. He then screams "Screw you!" at the top of his lungs before dropping the camera. He holds the gun he had found on the floor previously to his throat, preparing to shoot but decides not to go through with it.

Eventually, the bunker doors are reopened after 86 days and Murphy exits the bunker. When he is outside he sees A.L.I.E.'s mansion in the distance and runs to it. Once inside the mansion, Jaha welcomes him. Murphy angrily swings a punch at Jaha but is too weak and misses, and then falls to the ground. Jaha carries him away. Murphy wakes up in a chair and he's freshly groomed with a new set of clothes to wear. There is an apple and glass of water sitting on the small table in front of him. He drinks the water and then gets up, and notices Jaha kneeling and meditating. Murphy tries to speak to him but A.L.I.E. appears and tells him that Jaha is in the "City of Light" and can't hear him. Jaha quickly awakens and gets into an argument with Murphy. Murphy tries to make Jaha understand that A.L.I.E. was the one who ended the world and throws his apple at her in frustration, but since she is a hologram, the apple just passes through her. Murphy ends up leaving the two alone.

At night, Murphy stands near a boat, just like the one he came to shore on three months ago. Jaha tries talking to Murphy and offers him the small stone-like object he held while meditating. Jaha says the object will take him to the "City of Light" but Murphy declines his offer. Jaha then says that in the City of Light, there is no hate, pain, or envy, to which Murphy retorts that they are the ABC's of him. Emori pulls up in a boat and docks it. The two seem happy to see each other. Jaha sees this and asks Murphy if he has changed his mind, and he says that he might. Murphy climbs aboard Emori's boat, asking her who she stole it from.

In Wanheda (Part 2), Murphy calls out to Jaha, breaking through his mind journey to the City of Light and he opens his eyes, seated at the front of the boat that has arrived on-shore. Emori tries to unload the case containing A.L.I.E. and Gideon grabs it from her, taking it with him off the boat. Emori tells them they're going around the Dead Zone this time as they start walking.

Emori's brother, Otan, asks Jaha if he has really been to the City of Light. Jaha takes Otan off on a walk while Gideon sits and thinks his way into the City of Light. Emori tells Murphy that she and her brother were recruited by a female who comes to them in drones. They collect technology for her and bring it to Gideon on the island. Emori decides to go after the case while Gideon is sitting there in oblivion while he visits the City of Light. She tells Murphy they have other buyers and as she is about to take it, Gideon catches her and holds her by the throat. Murphy tries to get Gideon to put Emori down but no matter what he does, Gideon is unmoved, saying, "there is no pain in the City of Light." Emori stabs him in the neck, killing him. She grabs the case and takes off back to the boat. Murphy follows after.

Emori and Murphy are at the boat, waiting for Otan to arrive. Murphy tries to open the case and Emori tells him she will split whatever is in there with him. Murphy comments how all she had to do was kill a guy and she thanks him for saving her life, kissing him on the cheek. She pries open the case with her knife, revealing technology with the infinity symbol, which is the same logo stamped on the chip Jaha gave to Murphy. Murphy realizes the case is housing A.L.I.E. and Jaha had brought her with them. Otan shows up and demands the case from Murphy, taking Emori hostage. Jaha arrives as Emori asks what is going on. Murphy says that Otan "ate the damned chip" that Jaha gave him and threatens to drop the case into the water unless they let Emori go. Jaha starts proselytizing about the City of Light to Murphy and Murphy goes to drop the case in the water. Jaha and Otan give up and release Emori. Murphy throws the case far from them and into the water, leaving them running after it while he and Emori take off in the boat.

In Hakeldama, Murphy is seen apparently badly wounded lying in the forest. A traveling merchant notices Murphy and proceeds to loot his body but he is stopped and knocked out by Emori. Murphy then reveals that he is perfectly fine and that his playing dead was just a ploy for him and Emori to prey on passers-by. The pair proceeds to steal from the merchant's cart and exchange a kiss showing that they have now entered into a romantic relationship.

Later, back at the duo's cave hideout, Emori tells Murphy that she wants to go find her brother. Murphy is reluctant to put themselves in danger and tells Emori that "It's not a survivor's move". Emori is angry at this and responds that she will go find her brother herself.

As Murphy is preparing for another looting act by smearing a dead animal's blood on his face, Emori reappears and says that she will try to convince him to go with her to get back Otan. Just then they hear people approaching and Murphy foolishly takes his position on the trade route without first scouting out who the people are. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a small group of warriors who had been patrolling the woods looking for the thieves and they quickly apprehend the careless Murphy. At first, it seems that the patrol might kill Murphy after he refuses to tell them where his partner is, but one of the Grounders discovers the infinity token that Jaha gave him in his pack, saying it is the sacred symbol, and they decide to keep him alive for questioning. As Murphy is led away by the Coalition troops, Emori watches helplessly from the woods.

In Echoes, the people of Polis are left dealing with those tortured and killed by A.L.I.E.'s commands. In addition, the people Lexa killed to protect Clarke in the City of Light are also dead. The Grounders blame Skaikru for all of this. Sensing trouble, Murphy and Emori run away from everyone together.

The Four Horsemen (Promo 6 (Jackson, Murphy, and Abby)

Murphy gives Abby the stolen pills

In The Four Horsemen, in the woods in a cave Murphy and Emori are talking, and Murphy says that he misses Polis. She questions him whether he had sex with Ontari or not. It becomes a tense situation, but Murphy smoothly ducks the question. He decides to go to Arkadia to steal something. He kisses her and tells her that they will feast tonight. Murphy shows up to Arkadia and runs into David and Miller. David asks Murphy if he's here to stay and Murphy claims that he's there to stay. He sneaks in and starts to steal some food. However, Abigail approaches Raven to ask for anti-radiation medicine. Unfortunately, Raven declines her request. She asks Abby if she can guarantee that the medicine can save them, but she can't. She says that they have to try, especially since there's a child. Raven says that they can't waste any of their supply. Additionally, they'll be dead in two months even if they can save them today. Abby sharply responds by saying that the radiation isn't killing them, but Raven is. During this exchange, Murphy happens to overhear everything. In the med bay, Murphy walks up with stolen anti-radiation meds and gives them to Abigail. Abby expresses happiness that John is back since she was worried about him. While Luna is holding the child with Murphy watching, Raven enters the med bay and pulls some of the stolen food out of his bag.

Raven, Emori, Murphy, and Miller

Murphy, Emori, Raven and Miller at Becca's Island

In A Lie Guarded, the crew arrive at a dock on their way to Becca's Lab, they approach a marker shaped like the Washington monument, and Emori pauses. She remembers that A.L.I.E. had a rule about not crossing a line there, but Murphy doesn't care. They all decide to walk past the line, when suddenly a drone shows up and shoots one of the Guards in the head. It begins to chase the rest of them, shooting at every moving target. They all decide to split up to search for Luna. Emori tells Murphy that there are more dangerous things on the island other than the drones. She keeps telling Murphy they need to find a place to hide away, but Abby interrupts them saying they need to keep moving. The crew approaches a temple-like structure and heads inside, where they find a state-of-the-art laboratory that lights up from motion sensors.

In We Will Rise, at Becca's lab, Raven sits inside the space pod watching a video. It is then revealed that it's a simulation and Raven fails. She then engages in a conversation with Murphy, and tells him that she needs more hydrazine in order to make it work properly. She then pauses as her headache worsens and Murphy asks her if she's okay. Raven lets out a loud scream from the rocket. She steps out and lashes out at Murphy for cracking stupid jokes about her simulation failures. She calls him a leech that sucks everything dry. He responds by saying she's a mental case. This leads to Raven punching him repeatedly and saying that she hates him. Luckily, Luna comes out and calms her down before she completely pummels John. Afterwards, Raven goes back into the pod to run another simulation. Murphy decides to walk out and tells Luna that she's the new "Raven sitter". Luna approaches to talk to Murphy. He claims that Raven hates him when she tells him that Raven needs his help. They start discussing how Luna doesn't want to be the last person on Earth. She also tells him that she understands what it's like to hate oneself. Luna begins to explain how her Nightblood is a symbol of violence that led to her killing her own brother. She tells him that he can find peace, but he says that peace is overrated. To Murphy, it's the fighters that survive. Raven gets more frustrated about having the inability to figure things out, Murphy shows up and tells Raven that her quest for perfection is the problem. He says that she should forget about the computer calculations in the simulation. Instead, she should attempt to fly it herself. Raven appears to have a revelation and thanks Murphy for it.

In Gimme Shelter, at Becca's lab Clarke and Abby talk, Abby reveals to Clarke that injections with Luna's bone marrow can possibly give them Nightblood. However, they'll need a human test subject and they don't know who yet. During this, Emori overhears everything. Clarke and Emori approach Becca's mansion where Murphy is listening to loud music. He is also cooking and shows Clarke that he's becoming a really good cook. Just as Clarke walks off to take a shower, Emori tells Murphy that they're leaving. She tells him that Skaikru is going to sacrifice a human in order to test a Nightblood solution. Emori feels that the sacrifice will be her. However, John tells her to calm down and that everything will be fine. Clarke hears mysterious noises in the mansion. She grabs her gun to investigate and eventually enters an office. She lifts one of the blinds and notices a hole in the window. Murphy walks in and tells her not to be afraid, but Clarke warns that someone is in the mansion, Suddenly, we see Emori taking food in the kitchen. A mysterious man attacks her, but Clarke and Murphy show up to deter him. Once they stop him, Emori begins to question him and wants to kill him. Murphy stops her from doing it, but Emori suddenly asks about where the "others" are. They decide to tie him up for questioning. Murphy is talking to the prisoner, but then Emori comes in and starts punching him in the face. Clarke wants her to stop because she'll kill him. She says, "What if his death can save us all?" It becomes clear who Clarke wants to volunteer as the Nightblood solution guinea pig. Back in Becca's lab, we see Abby inject the mansion prisoner. Abby puts the needle inside of him as Roan, Clarke, Raven, Jackson, Murphy and Emori all watch.

Murphy and Emori are cuffed to the ladder of the spaceship.

In God Complex, at Becca's lab, Emori's lie about the test subject's identity surfaces, resulting in her and Murphy getting locked up. Emori's fear for being the test subject resurfaces as she knows she is the next test subject. Murphy begs Abby and Clarke not to inject Emori claiming he loves her.

In DNR, Murphy and Emori are talking about living underground for five years in Becca's lab. Suddenly, the rocket's orbital systems go online. Raven wants to look into it, but Murphy warns her about coding since it can damage her brain more. Raven smooth talks her way from his concern and gets to work. Murphy and Emori leave the room. Raven continues talking to her vision of Becca. Emori watches her talking to herself. Emori talks to Murphy as she fears the rest of Skaikru is not coming back for them. Murphy then suggests that they go to lighthouse bunker instead. Emori questions the lack of food, however, Murphy says it doesn't matter since they love each other. Jackson and Miller enter to get Emori and Murphy. Murphy approaches Raven and tells her that it's time to leave. She tells Murphy that she's not going and that she's dying. Murphy then notices a spacesuit and asks Raven if her plan is to go to outer space. She then asks him if he knows what it's like to be in pain all the time. All she wants to do is space walk one last time. Raven then tells Murphy to tell the others that she floated herself. She then hugs him and tells him to go and survive.

In The Other Side, after Jaha and Clarke locked Bellamy in a holding cell they need someone to guard the door and Clarke says that she knows the right person. Seconds later, Abby is walking with John Murphy, and he says that no one will get by him. They arrive at Bellamy's holding cell and Murphy takes the key from Miller. Abby then gives Murphy a taser just in case Bellamy gets out of line. Murphy walks into the cell and sees Bellamy with bloody wrists as he attempts to escape from his handcuffs. Murphy tries to talk some sense into him and says that his imprisonment will only last a few days. Bellamy responds that Octavia will be dead in a few days, and Murphy leaves. Abby arrives to treat Bellamy's wounds. Bellamy then convinces Abby to help him escape. Abby suddenly yells for Murphy to help her, but it's a trap. Murphy runs inside and Bellamy knocks him unconscious. Abby also injects Murphy with a sedative to keep him unconscious.

The 100 S4 episode 12- Murphy & Emori

Murphy and Emori on the way to save Raven

In The Chosen, in the bunker all clans are running around in chaos. Murphy running around asking about Emori. He asks Niylah, but she hasn't seen her. He eventually finds Emori. She tells him that there are only 100 beds for Arkadians in the Second Dawn bunker. Bellamy tells Jaha, Kane and Clarke that he wants to get Raven. Clarke agrees with him and insists on joining him. Murphy and Emori bust into the room asking to join. Abigail agrees and tells Murphy that there will be a spot for him in the lottery. He then asks about Emori and Abby says that she'll do her best. Her answer is not a very convincing one. As they embark on their journey, Bellamy gets suspicious of John's intentions and questions him. Murphy blames their pending doom on Bellamy because of his opening of the bunker's door. He tells Bellamy that there won't be a seat for him or Emori. At the rover Emori laments over having lost their spot in the bunker saying she'd never felt like she'd had a home before that moment. Murphy then reassures her that her home is with him. Suddenly, a figure jumps out into the road and Bellamy hits him, crashing the truck into a tree as a result. Grounders then ambush their convoy wanting their radiation suits and protective helmets. Just as things appear dire, we see Echo riding on a horse and put arrows through some of the attackers. Suddenly, Emori begins to cough up blood, and it's clear that she's suffering from radiation exposure. It appears that there's an issue with her suit, and Murphy intends to save her. He demands that Echo removes her suit, but that attempt fails. Suddenly, Clarke takes off her suit claiming that she has Nightblood. However, it's untested Nightblood and could prove to be a dangerous decision. However, they proceed with saving Emori by replacing her suit and helmet with Clarke's. Back at Becca's lab, Raven is staring at a screen. Bellamy, Clarke, Murphy, Emori, Monty, Harper and Echo then arrive. They then mention that they need to go out to space and live on the Go-Sci Ring.

The 100 Praimfaya 4x13 - Monty & Murphy

Murphy helps Monty with his burnt hand

In Praimfaya, at Becca's lab, Bellamy, Clarke, Raven, Monty, Harper, Murphy, Emori and Echo watch the death wave destroy Polis through their last drone feed. Raven then begins calculations in her head and realizes that she'll need to manually dock the ship in the hangar bay. She also tells everyone that they need to be off the ground at least 20 minutes before the death wave hits. Though the situation seems grim, Bellamy offers some optimism. Moments later, Raven Presses a button and a timer is set for 90 minutes - the time left until the death wave reaches them. Murphy and Monty discuss Jasper's death as they search for the oxygenator. Murphy makes a snide remark about Jasper taking a coward's way out and an enraged Monty grabs him. Murphy tells him to be careful about ripping his suit. Then Monty tells Murphy the only thing he cares about is surviving. However, their quarreling comes to an end when they find a large panel at Becca's bunker with the scrubber. In order for them to get it out in one piece, Monty decides to take off his gloves to dislodge it. The moment his hands are exposed to radiation, his hands quickly start to burn as he screams in agony. Monty's hands are badly burnt by the radiation and Murphy helps him get his gloves on. They start to carry the machine and Murphy tries to distract him from the pain by asking him about Harper. Suddenly, Monty passes out and Murphy says that he's sorry. He then proceeds to drag the oxygenator back to Becca's lab by himself leaving Monty behind. Outside Becca's lab, Raven instructs Bellamy and Clarke while pointing toward a tower. Murphy appears with the oxygenator, struggling to carry it, as a concerned Bellamy approaches him. Bellamy is forced to go and get an unconscious Monty. Murphy and Bellamy then arrive to save Monty. Murphy tells him that he got the oxygenator over to the lab. This leads to Monty embracing Murphy, telling him that he may not hate him anymore. at Becca's lab, Bellamy and Murphy are carrying Monty in. Murphy and Spacekru get onto the Ark, but Raven is low on oxygen. Murphy and Emori decide to share theirs along with everyone else. Meanwhile, Monty instructs Bellamy to connect the oxygen scrubber to the conduits on the Ark. Suddenly, Monty passes out, then so do Emori and Murphy. Bellamy hits a switch and everyone passes out. A second later, the oxygen vents turn on and everyone begins to revive.

Murphy spends the next six years on the Ring with Spacekru. Monty's first batch of algae puts Murphy in to a coma for a number of weeks. After five years in space and lacking a method to return to the ground, Murphy gets frustrated and pushes everyone away, eventually leading to him and Emori splitting up.

In Eden, six years after the Second Nuclear Apocalypse, Spacekru is surviving on the Ring. Raven, Echo, Monty, Harper, Emori, and Bellamy are having a meal. Murphy, however, doesn't eat with them. He has claimed his own area of the Ark and is antagonistic to the rest of the group. Emori tries to contact those on Earth, but Raven points out that the atmospheric radiation prevents radio contact. Murphy spots another spaceship in orbit. A couple hours later, they see a dropship heading to the ground, It is heading to the green spot on the planet that the Ark survivors have named "Eden". The group decides they need to get to the mothership and start preparing to leave the Ark, some more happy than others.

In Sleeping Giants, on the Go-Sci Ring, Spacekru needs enough fuel in order to get to the ground. So, they come up with a plan to take fuel from the Eligius IV mining ship. After landing on the giant ship, they are surprised to find no one in the ship. They find alarms going off but they manage to turn them off. They figure out that prisoners were on the ship but assume that the prisoners are no longer there. Just when they've got enough fuel and are ready to leave, they discover a cryogenic chamber with 284 frozen prisoners. One of the prisoners wakes up and attacks Raven, Echo and Bellamy, but the man gets killed by Bellamy. After the attack, Bellamy asks Raven to figure out a way for them to be able to kill all the prisoners remotely so that they can use it as leverage to save their people once they get on the ground. Raven tries but comes up with nothing. She tells Bellamy that the cryogenic chamber can only be controlled by someone from inside the ship. She offers to stay behind but Bellamy doesn't want to leave anyone else to die. To convince Bellamy to leave her, Raven lies to him that there's an escape pod for captains in case of emergency. Murphy also decides to remain behind with Raven - only to realize that there is no escape pod.

In Pandora's Box, on the space ship, Raven is working on the computer. Murphy walks in and tells her that they are still asleep and she gestures towards the computer. She tells him that's it's handled, and says that she was trying to figure out who they were dealing with on the ground.

Raven-murphy-shifting-sands

Murphy and Raven

In Shifting Sands, Paxton McCreary is torturing Raven to unlock the launch codes for the missiles. Shaw had told them that Raven is the one who hacked the system. Raven is clueless because she's innocent but no one seems to believe her. When McCreary becomes impatient and is ready to kill Murphy for Raven to talk, Shaw uses force to send everyone out so that he's left with Raven and Murphy. He explains to them that he lied about Raven locking the launch codes to save Octavia's people from a missile attack. The option is to either let McCreary beat Raven and Murphy to death or tell the truth and have Diyoza launch the missiles and kill all of Wonkru. Raven comes up with a plan in which Shaw agrees to let Murphy go (and warn his people about the missile attack) while Raven "unlocks" the system. Shaw lets Murphy go but to avoid others becoming suspicious, he lets them put a tracker / collar on his neck. Raven and Shaw then pretend to be working on unlocking the codes but instead they are tracking Murphy to make sure that he's in a position to communicate to Octavia's team about the missile attack. Their plan progresses forward until Murphy is shocked by the shock collar still around his neck. He is forced to stay behind to be out of the shock collar's range while the others move forward to warn Wonkru. Once the rover gets in range to communicate with the others. At the woods Murphy is reunitned with his friends and Madi who had been hiding in the valley, they decide to drive to join with Wonkru and hide from the prisoners. Murphy is unable to join them because of the tracker on his neck. Emori chooses to remain behind with him.

5x08 - Murphy and Emori 4

Murphy and Emori arguing what to do with McCreary

In Exit Wounds, Murphy and Emori have been hiding in a cave to block the Prisoners from tracking Murphy as Emori figures out how to disable the tracker. Thanks to Raven's teachings Emori manages to remove the tracker safely. They also take time to talk about their failed relationship during which Murphy reveals that he pushed Emori away because he was jealous that she was spending more time with Raven.

5x08 - Murphy and Emori 3

Murphy and Emori acting as McCreary's prisoners

In How We Get to Peace, Diyoza gets a call from Murphy and Emori revealing that they trapped McCreary. They are willing to offer McCreary back alive in exchange for Raven. When Kane tells Diyoza that they can't trust Murphy, she tells Murphy to kill McCreary if they want to. When McCreary wakes up, Murphy reveals that Diyoza didn't care about him. McCreary becomes angry at Diyoza but is impressed by Murphy's bomb skills. He asks Murphy to join his gang. So, they come up with a plan for McCreary to pretend that he's captured Murphy and Emori. Emori doesn't like the idea, but they agree and McCreary takes them to the village.

In Sic Semper Tyrannis, at Shallow Valley, Murphy and Emori are reunited with Raven and Echo. They start brainstorming on how to escape. Echo brings up her plan to kill Shaw so that Raven can become the pilot and use the ship against the prisoners. But Raven tells them that Shaw could be useful to them as a spy. She comes up with an idea to divide the prisoners through infighting. While the prisoners are fighting, Raven and Emori would then quickly disable the collars from their people and escape. Murphy figures out that dividing the prisoners should be easy because there's already rivalry between McCreary and Diyoza's people. So, Murphy tells McCreary about the cure to make him angry at Diyoza; and Echo tells Diyoza to prepare for McCreary. This leads to a showdown between McCreary and Diyoza's people. Diyoza tries to avoid a fight by coming clean about the cure and telling them her plans for the valley. This calms both sides down, to Murphy's disappointment. Out of options, Murphy decides to incite a fight by throwing a stone at the crowd. This instantly causes both sides to break into a fight. With Murphy's job done, he goes back to the church where Raven and Echo are quickly turning off the collars from their people. Just before they escape, Kane comes in and tells them that they have to save Diyoza. He tells them about the peace plan he initiated between Diyoza and Clarke. While Murphy and Raven feel guilty for jeopardizing the peace plan, Murphy agrees to go with Kane to save Abby and Diyoza while Raven, Emori, Echo and Shaw escape into the woods. Murphy and Kane go to the medical room where McCreary and Diyoza start fighting for Abby.

5x11 - Spacekru

Murphy noticing McCreary's people

In The Dark Year, Raven, John, Emori and Echo are hiding in a cave with Shaw, Diyoza and Kane. They notice that McCreary has called off his people from hunting them and is moving them to strategic positions. They realize that McCreary knows Wonkru is coming. They figure out that Clarke must have betrayed them to McCreary. So, they radio Bellamy to warn Wonkru that all the entrances into the valley are now blocked. However, Bellamy says they don't have a choice because they are already on their way and don't have enough food rations left to return to Polis. To figure out a way for Wonkru to enter safely, Spacekru leaves the cave and starts scanning the area. After noticing McCreary's ammunition, Murphy suggests stealing it, leaving McCreary without weapons. Unfortunately, they're confronted by McCreary's people with more deadly weapons. Just before Spacekru surrenders, Shaw shows up and gives himself up.

In Damocles (Part 1), Murphy remains behind with Emori to try to fix one of the prisoners' sonic cannons as the others go to find Madi. Later, as Octavia, Gaia, Bellamy and Indra struggle to survive the aftermath of the gorge massacre, Murphy arrives with Echo, Emori and Madi in the rover to rescue them. Murphy attempts to use the supposedly-fixed sonic cannon, but the weapon overloads, forcing Murphy to toss it away where it explodes. The group quickly flees to rejoin Wonkru.

In Damocles (Part 2), along with the rest of Spacekru, Murphy takes part in the gorge assault in the rover as part of Madi's plan. Murphy complains about not attacking and being a big target in the rover before the prisoners shoot out the engine. Murphy is shot and wounded, but manages to use the rover's Gatling gun to provide covering fire for Bellamy and Echo to take out the cannons.

Later, Murphy is making his way through the valley with the rest of the wounded when word of the Damocles Event comes. Unable to continue walking, Murphy insists on being left behind, but Monty and Emori stay with him while sending Harper and everyone else ahead. After Emori states that she doesn't want to leave the man she loves to die, Murphy refuses to do that to her and allows Monty to carry him back to the ship. With seconds to spare, the group arrives at the Gagarin and Bellamy helps to carry Murphy onboard the dropship.

On Eligius IV, Abby is able to successfully treat Murphy's injuries, leading Clarke and Bellamy to joke about his continuing tendency to survive. Murphy recovers enough to take part in the planning session for what to do next and groans at the idea of having to survive on algae again. He enters cryo for the next 125 years with everyone but Monty and Harper. On Monty's video message, he comments that as a child, Jordan's favorite from Monty and Harper's stories was Murphy believe it or not. Jordan defends himself as having been going through a rebellious phase at the time.

In The Gospel of Josephine, Murphy is one of the first to notice that something is wrong when Clarke keeps calling him by his first name John instead of his last name Murphy. Josephine Lightbourne, having taken over Clarke's body, reveals herself to a horrified Murphy and offers him immortality, needing help blending in better as Clarke. Murphy agrees to hear her out.

In Memento Mori, having been offered immortality for himself and Emori through Mind Drives, Murphy fills Josephine in on Clarke's history and helps to guide her in how to manipulate Abby into making Nightblood for the Primes. After learning that Bellamy has discovered the truth, Murphy agrees to help try to convince his friend to come over to their side as well, pretending to be a prisoner too though Bellamy quickly sees through it. At the end of the day, satisfied by the events, Josephine hands over the Mind Drives to Murphy.

In The Old Man and the Anomaly, Murphy proposes to Emori using the Mind Drives which she accepts. Josephine, revealing that Clarke is still alive inside of her, pulls Murphy, Emori and Ryker Desai into her plan to get rid of Clarke for good. Despite his friendship with Clarke, the promise of immortality causes Murphy to side with Josephine against his friends. However, after Josephine takes him hostage to get the others to stop, Murphy orders Bellamy to take her to the Children of Gabriel to get Josephine's Mind Drive removed. Josephine slashes Murphy's leg, forcing Emori to stay behind to tend to him as Bellamy takes Josephine off to find the Children of Gabriel. Murphy and Emori are later imprisoned by Russell Lightbourne after Madi begins attacking Primes, killing Miranda Mason and nearly killing Priya Desai.

In Ashes to Ashes, Murphy orders Echo in Trig to hold on as they will be coming to Ryker's machine shop to get Becca's journal and then to pretend like she hates him, which she does. Russell Lightbourne, despite Murphy's betrayals, respects his sense of survival and offers Murphy the chance to still become a Prime if he helps Jade to locate and return Josephine unharmed. To add further incentive, Russell threatens Emori's life if he fails.

Murphy and Jade lead an attack on the Verge and sneak in through the back while the Children of Gabriel are distracted out front. Upon finding his friends inside, Murphy explains that he is doing this for Emori and asks if Clarke is really dead. Posing as Josephine to infiltrate Sanctum, Clarke confirms it, telling Murphy "boohoo." and sends Murphy and Jade outside while she pretends to execute Layla. Upon returning to Sanctum, Russell is pleased with the result and keeps his word to Murphy, sending him to see Emori.

In Adjustment Protocol, Murphy convinces a reluctant Emori to go along with the Primes so that they can be immortal together. Russell pretends that Murphy and Emori, now Nightbloods, have become the hosts to Daniel and Kaylee Lee respectively whose Mind Drives were wiped by Simone Lightbourne. Dressed up as Primes and with Murphy sporting a new haircut, they are introduced to the new Jasmine, Caleb and Miranda Mason. Upon noticing Murphy and Emori holding hands, Gabriel Santiago informs the two that Daniel and Kaylee are siblings, causing them to release each other though Russell dismisses the matter as unimportant.

Murphy and Emori are horrified to discover that Abby has been mind wiped to become the new host for Simone. When the Primes prepare to retreat to Eligius IV, Murphy and Emori walk away. Near tears over the loss of Abby and Clarke, Murphy angrily tells "Josephine" that she killed Clarke who only ever tried to help people. Murphy and Emori state that they are going to stay and save their people. In tears herself, Clarke states that "I'm proud of you, Murphy." Murphy quickly realizes that it's Clarke and not Josephine as she didn't call him John and silently begins crying before informing Clarke of her mistake to the shock and awe of Emori. Clarke covers for the two to Russell, claiming that they had changed their minds and are cowards. Russell accepts this and lets Murphy and Emori go.

In The Blood of Sanctum, Murphy and Emori, posing as Daniel and Kaylee, rescue their friends from the Adjusters using their power as Primes. Murphy is somewhat shocked when Daniel's boyfriend Zev kissed him during the rescue. With innocent people in danger, Gabriel reveals that to infiltrate the tavern he needs Murphy's help as Daniel is the only one who will be credible going in. After some reluctance, Murphy agrees to risk his own life to save the innocent people that are trapped. Murphy and Gabriel overpower the Adjusters with Murphy choking Zev unconscious, apologizing in the process and commenting on the man's kissing prowess. The group succeeds in saving the innocent people while Clarke kills all of the Primes except for Russell who is arrested on Eligius IV.

In From the Ashes, Murphy and the others move into the farmhouse that Russell had built for Simone. However, Eric Jackson feels upset and traumatized when he felt like Murphy was involved with Abigail Griffin's death. Clarke states that she does not blame Murphy for her mother's death and forgives him for his role in it. Later, as Emori reads to him from Kaylee Lee's journal, Murphy admits that he does feel guilty for Abby's death, blaming himself for all of his choices that he believes led to Abby being killed. Murphy rejects his guise as Daniel Lee despite the fact that the others think it might help to keep the peace in the long run. When a riot breaks out, Murphy and Emori intervene, using their status as Daniel and Kaylee to help calm the situation on Raven's suggestion.

In False Gods, Murphy and Emori are lying together in bed when Raven arrives to seek Emori's help with a reactor problem. Upon realizing that the reactor is going into meltdown, Raven gathers Clarke, Murphy, Emori and Indra to discuss the problem. Raven reveals that she needs the help of Clarke, Murphy and Emori as they are Nightbloods which will help to protect them from the deadly levels of gamma radiation the reactor is giving off. Both Clarke and Murphy volunteer Clarke for the job, but Clarke can't be spared as she needs to focus on "Russell's" execution. Instead, Raven assigns Emori to fixing the reactor control rods while Murphy will wait outside and take over if Emori can't finish the job in 60 seconds.

After Raven recruits Hatch and three other Eligius Prisoners to repair the cooling system, reactor repairs begin with little time to conduct them with Murphy expressing discontent over Raven's lies to the prisoners about how dangerous it will be. As Emori works on the reactor, Murphy waits outside and urges her to hurry up. Though Emori succeeds in fixing the control rods, she takes a few seconds too long and Murphy rushes her off to a decontamination shower and then to Raven. However, fixing the control rods only slows down the meltdown, not stops it completely.

With time running out, Murphy urges Raven to help the others fix the cooling system, offering to "spin the dials" for her but Raven rejects Murphy's suggestion as it is too complicated for Murphy to take over for her. As both Murphy and Emori become sick from the radiation, Raven realizes that the radiation is leaking worse than she thought since Murphy had never entered the primary containment chamber. Hatch and the other Eligius prisoners become terminally ill from the radiation and Raven lies to them about the source of their illness. As Hatch calls for more nitrogen, Raven reassures Murphy that Emori will be alright as Nightblood metabolizes radiation and they will get her to Jackson once the danger is over. However, if the reactor melts down completely, not even Nightblood will save them.

Raven sends Murphy to deliver the nitrogen to Hatch and promptly locks him in the secondary containment chamber with the prisoners, relying on Murphy's self-preservation instinct to force him to help fix the problem. Murphy aids the ailing Hatch in the repair and Hatch, recognizing Murphy as a Nightblood and a Prime, reveals that he already knows the truth and is continuing on for his wife Nikki, knowing that Murphy is also trying to save Emori. Murphy is intrigued by Hatch who doesn't appear to be one of "the worst of the worst" like the Eligius prisoners are supposed to be and Hatch explains his history as a bank robber who became a killer when a bank robbery went wrong. Murphy suggests that making the ultimate sacrifice will make up for Hatch's actions, but Hatch regretfully tells Murphy that nothing will ever make up for it. Working together, Hatch and Murphy manage to repair the cooling system at the last possible second, narrowly averting a meltdown. Hatch dies from the radiation moments later and Murphy crouches sadly over his dead body.

After the meltdown is averted, Murphy and Raven remove the bodies to the machine shop. As Murphy stands over Hatch's body, an upset Raven states that she's responsible. Murphy agrees, commenting that "the mighty have fallen. Welcome to the world of gray." Nikki enters with a few other Eligius prisoners looking for her husband and violently assaults Raven in her rage. Murphy and Emori attempt to intervene, but are both thrown aside multiple times. Finally, the other prisoners drag a still-screaming Nikki away. Murphy and Emori attempt to help Raven to Medical, but she rejects their help as she sits and cries. Shortly after, Murphy, Raven and Emori enter Medical for treatment of their injuries and radiation poisoning.

In Welcome to Bardo, Murphy and Emori are recovering in Medical from their radiation exposure under Jackson's care when the Faithful begin threatening to commit suicide if Russell is not released. As the Faithful are the only reason that they can't kill Russell, Murphy suggests just letting them go through with it as it would solve the problem, but his suggestion is flatly rejected. Indra suggests instead sending Murphy and Emori as Daniel and Kaylee to talk the Faithful down. However, Emori proves to still be too weak, concerning Murphy who Jackson reassures, stating that recovering from radiation isn't always a straight line and Emori will be fine. With no one else to do it, Murphy, who Jackson clears for duty, reluctantly agrees to help, but is annoyed at having to save the day all of the time.

Walking to the tavern with Murphy, Indra reassures him that she will keep him covered. Murphy's attempt to talk the Faithful down is interrupted by his discovering them about to sacrifice a young child. Enraged, Murphy charges into the tavern to rescue the young boy, putting him outside of Indra's range. Murphy convinces the boy's father to not go through with it and orders the release of all of the children. However, Zev, Daniel's boyfriend, realizes that Murphy is not Daniel. When Trey tests him, Murphy slips up and the Faithful capture Murphy to execute him as an imposter.

Later, as the Faithful prepare to burn Murphy alive, Indra arrives to help with Emori and Russell. Russell reaffirms Murphy's cover as Daniel, stating that "Daniel" is like a son to him and had saved his life after he was shot by giving him a blood transfusion. As the situation deescalates, Murphy and Emori begin flirting with each other as Indra realizes that "Russell" is really in fact Sheidheda in Russell's body.

In Nakara, Murphy is enjoying a drink in the tavern when Jeremiah, the father of the boy he saved from immolation, approaches Murphy to thank him for his actions. Murphy is pleased to hear that the boy he saved is doing well and invites Jeremiah to sit down and have a drink with him. However, they are interrupted by Indra who asks Murphy about Hatch and Nikki. After learning that Nikki has most likely stolen Wonkru's guns, Murphy admits that they have a problem and joins Indra in confronting Nikki. Murphy offers his sincere condolences for the loss of Hatch who was a good man, but Nikki is unwilling to hear him out, knowing that Murphy has Nightblood and so was safe the entire time while Raven sent her husband to his death. Nikki openly makes a threat on Raven's life, telling Murphy and Emori to tell Raven that she said "bang, bang."

Later, as Indra prepares to make Madi the Commander of Wonkru again, Murphy, Emori and Jackson confront her, knowing that Madi is too scared to go through with it. Indra simply orders Jackson to get with the Skaikru delegation while Murphy and Emori have no role in the proceedings. However, Murphy directly stands up to Indra to protect Madi who runs off with a panic attack chased by Jackson. Noticing that Indra is greatly troubled, Murphy and Emori press Indra to confide in them about what's going on. Indra finally admits to the two that Sheidheda has been resurrected in Russell's body with Murphy quickly grasping the seriousness of the problem facing them. Though Indra believes that they need Madi, Murphy tells Indra that they need her instead. Murphy points out that it was really Indra keeping things going in the bunker while Octavia was too busy being Blodreina and he and Emori convince Indra to take charge of Wonkru herself. With a pleased Murphy and Emori watching from nearby, Indra asserts her leadership over Wonkru, reuniting the clan and effortlessly defeating the defiant Knight. After she is done, Indra walks away with Murphy and Emori.

In A Little Sacrifice, Murphy tends to the badly injured Jeremiah in the aftermath of Sheidheda's massacre and quickly realizes that the Dark Commander is going after Madi. Racing to find Madi, Murphy comforts the young girl through a panic attack and promises to look after her while Indra goes after Sheidheda, ordering her to "get the bastard."

Along with Emori, Murphy helps tend to the injured in the room containing the Primes' bones and watches surviving members of the Faithful eye him with distrust and openly call Murphy a liar for pretending to be Daniel. Uncomfortable, Murphy tells Emori that everyone hates them, but she feels that they are at least alive to hate them which Murphy doesn't believe will last long before Sheidheda comes back to finish what he started. Murphy points out how Indra's guards, who were Trikru and loyal to her, were being swayed by Sheidheda's words. Emori states that even if the Dark Commander does take control, the people aren't a threat to him but Murphy, recalling his chess game with the Dark Commander, knows that they will be: when they played, Sheidheda made sure to take Murphy's pawns so that they couldn't move across the board to get promoted. Murphy believes that taking out the Faithful so that they can't get revenge will only be below killing Madi on Sheidheda's list of priorities. Murphy insists that the Sanctummites are in danger and acknowledges that he's aware that they are in danger too if they help them.

After Sheidheda defeats Indra in single combat, he discovers Murphy, Emori and the Sanctumites gone and orders them hunted down. Having anticipated the Dark Commander's victory, Murphy is revealed to have moved everyone to Sanctum's reactor room and sealed the door so that no one can get at them. Murphy reassures Jeremiah and his son that they are safe in the reactor room and tells Emori that the next step is "tomorrow's problem. Today we survive. All of us." Pleased by this, Emori tells Murphy that he just might be someone worth believing in.

In Blood Giant, Gabriel approaches Sheidheda, wondering what is going on. The Dark Commander demands to know who Gabriel is and Clarke realizes that it isn't Russell. Otis introduces Sheidheda and Raven comments that they now know where his code went. The Dark Commander demands that everyone either kneel or die, but Cadogan informs him that while he normally would relish the opportunity to recruit Sheidheda's forces to the cause, he has neither the time nor the patience to do so at the moment.

On Cadogan's signal, cloaked Disciples kill the Dark Commander's Wonkru guards, allowing Raven, Indra and Clarke to rush to help the tied-up Murphy. Murphy comments that he can accept invisibility and ray guns, but he needs an explanation for Bellamy's new status. Clarke asks if Madi is safe with Gaia, only to learn that everyone else had thought that Gaia was with her. Murphy reassures Clarke that Madi is safe for now and Cadogan orders Indra restrained with Sheidheda against everyone's wishes. Cadogan points out that Indra was standing by the throne and states that the only reason she isn't dead is that she was unarmed. Sheidheda charges Cadogan, but a still-cloaked Disciple stabs him in the gut. Cadogan has a Disciple bring the palace's microphone over and the the Dark Commander that his wound is deep and Cadogan has no interest in removing Sheidheda from his throne. Cadogan proposes that the Dark Commander gives him undisturbed passage to get what he came for, meaning that Cadogan sees not a single soul on their path and in exchange, Cadogan will leave Gabriel there to treat him. Once the Disciples are gone, Sheidheda is free to "continue the debasement of our species" until he is saved along with the rest of humanity once Cadogan completes his quest although the other option is for the Dark Commander to die. With Sheidheda agreeing, Cadogan orders the others that it's time to go after the Flame.

Outside, Cadogan derisively observes the state of Sanctum, but monologues about how thanks to the Disciples, humanity will transcend and reach the Promised Land, much to Clarke's annoyance. Clarke begins leading the group through Sanctum and Murphy approaches Bellamy, believing that he is only playing along with the Disciples and asking what his plan really is. Bellamy informs Murphy that it isn't an act and that it's real and he is trying to save them all. While Bellamy doesn't expect Murphy to understand, Bellamy tries to reassure Murphy that he is still Murphy's friend and Bellamy is looking out for him. Not at all reassured, Murphy walks away from Bellamy, much to his distress.

Approaching Clarke and Raven, Murphy begs for them to tell him that Bellamy is not serious, but Raven confirms it. Murphy and Clarke admit that they both feel out of the loop and Clarke asks what he means that Madi is safe for now. Murphy reassures Clarke that Madi is safe with Emori in the reactor, shocking Clarke. Murphy informs Raven and Clarke that believe it or not, the reactor is the safest place in Sanctum and Raven wonders what the hell has been going on in Sanctum while they've been gone. Cadogan orders the group to stop and Clarke tells him that she's in a hurry and that he has their friends and she would like to have them back and then to see her daughter. If Cadogan would like to see his, he has to follow her. Cadogan announces a new plan: Clarke goes while everyone else stays there. Bellamy objects, reminding Cadogan that as long as their friends are out there, Clarke won't risk their lives. Cadogan states that that's why Raven and Murphy are staying with them and orders Clarke to hurry along as Cadogan doesn't want to be on Sanctum for any longer than he has to be. After looking at Bellamy for a moment, a frustrated Clarke walks off alone. Murphy suggests waiting in the tavern, but is stopped by two armed Disciples decloaking in front of him. Raven tells Murphy that he will get used to it and the two exchange quips about how well the other did as Cadogan, Bellamy and Doucette settle onto a vantage point to keep watch.

Sitting around a campfire, Raven informs Murphy of the developments since they last saw each other. Murphy asks if its weird that to him the craziest part of all of it is Bellamy's robe which Raven agrees with. Raven points out how calm Bellamy seems to be despite the fact that Echo and Octavia are hostages and Murphy reminds Raven that they are hostages too. However, Raven knows that something happened to Bellamy while he was on Etherea that caused him to change.

Suddenly, alarms begin going off warning that Red Sun toxin has been detected. Murphy and Raven join the Disciples and Bellamy urges Cadogan to get back to Bardo for his own safety. Cadogan refuses to leave without the Flame and suspects that it might just be another one of Clarke's tricks. Raven draws everyone's attention to the sky where the gas giant that Sanctum orbits has been turned red by the eclipse and affected bugs are attacking Sanctum's shield. The power goes out as people begin rushing for Ryker's Keep and Murphy suggests that they should join them unless Bellamy wants to drown him again in the pond. Raven realizes that the power being out means that the shield is down and spots a swarm of affected bugs coming towards them. Raven urges everybody to run which Bellamy agrees with, but Cadogan refuses to leave without the Flame. Doucette agrees that they should execute the hostages and get Cadogan home which Murphy points out isn't what Bellamy had said. Bellamy states that Clarke heard the alarm too and will go for Madi who Murphy states is in the reactor. Raven agrees that it's perfect as she can get the power back on and kill the bugs before the bugs kill them. The Disciples, Raven, Murphy and Bellamy all grab a torch and race towards the machine shop and the reactor.

The group arrives just after the swarm has killed Knight and two other members of Wonkru who were trying to break into the reactor. Using their torches, the group drives off the swarm and seals up the machine shop on Bellamy's orders in order to keep them out. Clarke arrives carrying a bag before they can finish sealing off the machine shop and explains that it contains anti-toxin from the farmhouse. Cadogan realizes she wants to use it on Madi, but Clarke states that there's enough for everyone, although Clarke was thinking of her daughter before Cadogan. Everyone takes the anti-toxin and Cadogan calls it "another lesson in the destructiveness of familial love."

Clarke tries to get through the locked door to the reactor without any success and Cadogan questions if she got the Flame or not. Clarke promises that if Cadogan gets her through the door, she will give it to him without a fight. Cadogan agrees and has Disciple Kelly blast open the door. As everyone in the reactor takes cover and Emori aims her gun at the door, Murphy enters and reassures Emori that it's the good guys while Clarke and Madi embrace. As Raven enters and embraces Emori, struck for a moment by the memory of Hatch's death, Murphy reassures the people hiding in the reactor that they have enough anti-toxin for everyone. Raven realizes that Emori took down the shield and begins working to get the power back on. Cadogan enters with his Disciples and Clarke silently hands over the Flame much to Cadogan's delight.

While they wait for Raven to restore the shield, Bellamy stands with Cadogan and Doucette as Cadogan examines the Flame and Madi warns Clarke that she shouldn't have given Cadogan the Flame based on the memories of the Commanders inside of her head. Cadogan asks Bellamy how long they have to stay there and Bellamy states that once the power is back on, the bugs will kill each other and the shield will prevent any more from coming in. However, until then, it's not worth the risk. Bellamy walks away from the Disciples and is embraced by a pleased Emori who is not yet aware of his defection. Bellamy admits that it's good to see her too and Emori comments on his clothes and Murphy pushes Bellamy to explain himself. However, the power returns and Bellamy decides to wait for another time and walks away, telling Cadogan that it won't be long now, shocking Emori when Bellamy addresses Cadogan as "my Shepherd." After seeing Nikki exit the reactor in tears, Murphy, Emori and Clarke rush to check on Raven who they find sitting on the floor, crying but otherwise unharmed and the three comfort her.

With the shield restored and the bugs gone, the Disciples, Bellamy, Clarke, Murphy, Emori and Raven make their way to the Great Hall where an armed Indra, having dispatched the Disciples left behind by Cadogan to guard her and Sheidheda, demands to know where her daughter is. Cadogan is confused as to who Indra is talking about and Bellamy tells Indra that nobody even knew that Gaia was missing until that day. Bellamy promises that they will get everybody back and orders Indra to put down the gun which Indra does after Clarke confirms his order. Urged on by a hallucination of Josephine Lightbourne, Gabriel reveals that he believes that he can repair the Flame's damaged code using a computer designed to repair broken Memory Drives, stitching together broken strings of code that, like the Flame itself, was created by Becca Franko. Cadogan gives Gabriel the Flame who inserts it into the computer and states that if Becca's memories are still inside, the computer will find them. The computer successfully begins repairing the Flame's code, but Gabriel suddenly changes his mind and destroys the Flame completely with a gunshot. Gabriel turns his gun onto Cadogan and orders the Disciples to take off their helmets and drop their weapons which they comply with. As Gabriel takes the anti-toxin, Bellamy attempts to calm him down, stating that they need Cadogan to get their friends back, including Echo and Hope. Taking advantage of Bellamy distracting Gabriel, Doucette attempts to attack him only to be shot in the chest by Clarke. Horrified, Bellamy catches Doucette who urges his friend not to lose faith before dying.

With the situation under control, Clarke orders Raven to fire up the Anomaly Stone so that they can get to their friends. Using a Disciple helmet, Raven is able to reactivate the Stone and demands to know which planet their friends are on. Cadogan informs Clarke that the planet if off-line and only he knows the code to it. Checking the star map, Raven determines that Cadogan is telling the truth and that there is one planet that they can't get to. Clarke demands that Cadgoan enter the code in exchange for getting to live and he complies, opening the Anomaly to their missing friends. Cadogan states that they have the Bridge to their friends, but Clarke orders Cadogan to come with them and he tells her that she should have more faith. As Bellamy approaches, Clarke orders him to remain behind as Bellamy has made his choice while Murphy really hopes that what he believes in was worth it. Bellamy asserts that it was and Raven leads Murphy, Emori, Jackson, Madi and Gabriel through the Anomaly with no one else saying a word to their former friend. They are followed through the Anomaly soon after by Indra, Cadogan and Clarke.

Personality[]

Murphy seems uptight but is a strong person who gets into fights quickly. He tends to try and use force rather than thinking something all the way through. On several occasions others have had to hold Murphy back, suggesting that he has a quick temper. Murphy´s passion for sarcastic remarks remains throughout the entire show, making him a person with a big sense of humour. He often displayed aggressive behavior throughout the early seasons of series, later on for more reasonable reasons despite remaining easily irritable.

Despite his violence, Murphy states that he had a good childhood, until the death of his father. He is shown to have a kinder side, caring for his girlfriend Emori, the Delinquents when they fall sick with hemorrhagic fever and helping Raven when she was on her near deathbed, saying it is because he does not want to be alone when he himself dies. While discussing what happened to his parents with Raven, Murphy allowed himself a moment of vulnerability in which he cries.

Throughout Season Two, Murphy goes through a significant personality change. He actively tries to contribute to the rescuing of Clarke and the others and saves Bellamy's life when he climbed down the cliff to rescue Mel. Eventually, he is able to re-earn Bellamy's trust and is given a gun and permission to go alone with Finn in search of Clarke and the other missing delinquents. During Finn's massacre; Murphy yells at Finn to stop over and over again, showing that he did not think what Finn was doing was right. Sickened of feeling as if he does not fit in with the rest of the Ark survivors, he agrees to travel to the City of Light with Jaha. When they encounter Emori in the Dead Zone, he offers her some of his water. He also tells her that her mutated hand looks "badass" instead of insulting her, displaying a more sympathetic and empathetic nature. Later, when Jaha sacrifices Craig, another Sky Person to save himself and Murphy. Murphy is shocked and sickened by Jaha's actions and tells Jaha to leave him behind.

In Season Four, Murphy's personality changes a lot. He is still a bit aggressive but shows a softer side. Murphy steals medicine for Adria when Raven refuses to give it, just like his father did for him on the Ark. He feels guilty for shooting Raven's leg and her resulting disability. He apologizes to her and tries to make amends. While Murphy remains a survivalist, he now loves Emori. He will do whatever is necessary for him and Emori to survive together.

In Season Five, Murphy has been kicked out by Emori for pushing her away and not helping the others return to the ground, appearing to have reverted to his old ways. After having an argument with Monty in which he is called "useless," Murphy volunteers to stay with Raven on Eligius IV, only to later learn there is no way off the ship and back to the ground, leaving him stranded, and clearly angry. Murphy didn't show aggression like he does before, acting smarter and kinder. In "Damocles (Part 2)," he tells Emori to leave, not wanting her to die - preparing to die alone which is something he told Raven he never wanted to do - showing he loves Emori more than anything and resulting in them getting back together.

In Season Six, Murphy is shown to struggle between his desire for immortality and his care for his friends. When he discovers that Clarke is dead and Josephine Lightbourne has taken her place, Murphy is horrified, but goes along with Josephine for the sake of immortality for himself and Emori. In turn, Raven suggest to Murphy that what the path he needs to follow is morality, not immortality, something that he appears to take to heart. Though Murphy continues helping the Primes, much of it is down to his love for Emori while doing his best to keep his friends safe at the same time. After losing Abby and apparently Clarke for good, Murphy abandons the Primes for good and is driven to tears and anger over their actions as he recognizes that Clarke and Abby only ever tried to help people. Clarke, who survived and was posing as Josephine, outright tells Murphy that she is proud of him for his choices, causing Murphy to recognize his friend beneath the guise of Josephine. Instead of retreating to space where he can be safe from the chaos of Sanctum, Murphy decides to save his people alongside Emori, a completely selfless action for him. However, he still hesitates when asked to help save the Sanctum citizens as it would mean putting his life on the line for people he doesn't really care about. After learning that he is really the only one that can help, Murphy reluctantly agrees and helps Gabriel subdue the people in the tavern so that they won't kill anyone while under in the influence of the Red Sun toxin.

At the beginning of Season Seven, Murphy refuses to continue the charade as Daniel Lee and shows a great deal of guilt for his actions, particularly his role Abby's death. Though even Clarke blames only Russell, Jackson blames Murphy who takes it to heart, feeling that his actions directly led to Abby's death. Murphy is visibly haunted by even hearing Abby's name let alone being reminded of the things he did. While tricked by Raven into helping Hatch repair the reactor, Murphy shows genuine interest in Hatch and sadness at his death despite their brief acquaintance. Though Raven had tricked Murphy as she was relying on his self-preservation instinct to force him to help with the repairs, Hatch recognized that Murphy was concerned with saving Emori more than himself.

Murphy is shown to have a soft spot for children. When the Faithful plan to sacrifice a child's life in "Welcome to Bardo," Murphy is immediately enraged at the audacity and without hesitation tries to rescue the threatened children even though it places his own life in danger. In "Nakara," he is shown to have earned the gratitude of the boy's father. Earlier, in "The Four Horsemen," he appeared to be visibly distressed by Adria suffering from Acute Radiation Syndrome, stealing medicine to help Abby treat her after overhearing an argument between Abby and Raven. Eric Jackson compares Murphy's actions to what Murphy's father did that got him floated, but Abby states she knew Murphy had it in him to do something so selfless.

As Season Seven continues, Murphy is shown to come to care for the Sanctumites even beyond his role as Daniel Lee. With Sheidheda rising to power, Murphy risks danger to protect everyone from the Dark Commander rather than just trying to save himself and Emori despite knowing that some of the people hate them for their deception. Emori is impressed with his attitude and growing leadership of the group, suggesting that Murphy is becoming someone worth believing in. During this time, Murphy reveals previously-unseen but impressive leadership qualities. Murphy's evolving leadership over the group causes both Emori and Indra to tell Murphy that they are proud of him and for Emori to comment on how completely selfless Murphy is being. At one point, Murphy quips that he misses being a live coward, but it is clearly meant in jest as he continues to risk his life to keep everyone safe. Later, Murphy is determined to relocate everyone on Sanctum to the much safer and regenerated Earth. Raven comments that she is getting freaked out by "Hero Murphy," but Murphy states that he is not a hero. Murphy insists that he only thinks that the people on Sanctum deserve a better fate than to live on a world where they are constantly in danger of getting eaten or occasionally going insane.

Physical Appearance[]

Murphy is of slim build and medium height, with brown hair that hangs just above his ears, dark blue eyes, and a prominent nose.

In Season Five, after a six-year jump, Murphy's hair was cut short and spiked up. Like Bellamy, Murphy also has a jawline beard.

In Season Six, Murphy maintains much of the same appearance as he had in Season Five. However, in "Adjustment Protocol," in anticipation of becoming a Prime, Murphy's whole look is made over. Murphy wears the regal clothes of a Prime while his hair is now shaved on the sides.

In Season Seven, Murphy retains the hairstyle he received when he prepared to become a Prime, but ditches the more regal clothing for a regular outfit.

Relationships[]

Bellamy Blake[]

Main article: Bellamy and Murphy
"We hanged him. We banished him. And now we're gonna kill him. Get the hell out of my way."
- Bellamy to Finn about Murphy[src]

In spite of Murphy's abrasive personality, Bellamy befriends him soon after they arrive on Earth. Although Murphy seems keen on doing as he pleases, he holds a certain respect towards Bellamy and briefly takes a right-hand-man kind of stance around him. Their relationship sours, however, when Murphy is falsely accused of killing Wells; the fallout eventually results in Charlotte's death and Murphy's banishment from the group. When he returns, Bellamy is reluctant to let him stay, but ultimately gives him a second chance. Murphy, however, betrays him and tries to kill him, causing their relationship to be even more strained.

When Bellamy encounters Murphy again after Murphy tried to hang him, Bellamy begins beating Murphy up but is stopped by Marcus Kane. They are both arrested and locked in the stockade together at Camp Jaha. Bellamy gives Murphy another chance when he takes Murphy with him to hunt for the missing Delinquents and Murphy proves himself to Bellamy and saves his life at one point. Bellamy appears to trust him once again, so much that he even gave him a gun. Bellamy even goes so far as to protect Murphy when Raven wants to exchange his life with Finn's for the Tondc massacre.

After Bellamy's death, despite his anger towards him in their last encounter, Murphy is shown to be upset and grieving, openly admitting to missing him.

Jaha[]

"You want to stop being treated like a criminal, you have to stop thinking that that's all you are. Take this leap of faith with me, John Murphy, and let me show you there's so much more for you than this."
- Thelonious Jaha[src]

John initially had hated Thelonious since he lived on The Ark as he was the one who floated his father for stealing medicine for him. His hatred for him was projected onto Thelonious's son, Wells, whom he hated just for being his son. When they finally interact in Survival of the Fittest, Murphy is hesitant to speak with him.

Eventually, when Jaha asks him to go to the City of Light with him. Murphy thinks little of it but feels out of place at Camp Jaha so he travels with him in search of it. While on the journey they become closer until Jaha throws out a member of the group in order to save himself. Murphy eventually tells Jaha to leave him behind and they are separated in the Second Season finale.

Raven Reyes[]

"I don't want to die alone."
- Murphy, after Raven asks him why he is helping her[src]

Murphy shot Raven at the end of Season One, resulting in her inability to ever walk properly again. In the first episode of Season Two, he tells Raven his tragic back-story after she asks him how a kid that claims to be loved by his parents became a psychopath. He helps her when she starts coughing up blood and when she asks why he tells her that he doesn't want to die alone.

Murphy shows Raven genuine kindness, remorse, and heartache. In Spacewalker, Raven asks Murphy to help her protect Finn from the Grounders and he happily complies. She betrays Murphy, however, by offering to give him up in Finn's place knowing full-well what kind of torture he will experience. Murphy calls her a "sick bitch" and tells her to go to hell.

In False Gods, Raven forces Murphy to help Hatch fix a melting down nuclear reactor by locking him in with Hatch, relying on Murphy's survival instinct to get the job done. In The Stranger, Murphy calls it one of Raven's more questionable moments while talking with Nikki, but states that he nonetheless respects what she did.

In Blood Giant, after reuniting, the two exchange friendly banter about how badly things have gone wrong and catch each other up on everything that has happened.

In A Sort of Homecoming, Murphy manipulates Raven into trying to fix a Disciple helmet in order to bring everyone on Sanctum back to Earth. In turn, Raven comments to Emori that she's kinda freaked out by "Hero Murphy."

Finn Collins[]

"Finn, don't do this. Let's walk out of here while we still can, ok? Finn, please."
- Murphy begging Finn not to shoot the Grounders[src]
Although they did not interact much initially, Finn and Murphy were thrown together in Inclement Weather when Bellamy brought Murphy along with them to track down Clarke and the rest of the missing Delinquents. When Finn was going to execute Grounders in Human Trials, Murphy tried to get him to stop and leave. When he failed to get Finn to stop, he was shocked by what Finn did. Later, when they were trying to help Finn escape and Raven wanted to give up Murphy instead, Finn stepped in and refused to allow Raven to do so. Murphy agrees to help defend the dropship with them.

Wells Jaha[]

"Look at this, everybody: the Chancellor of Earth!"
- Murphy, regarding Wells being on Earth, sarcastically.[src]
Murphy and Wells dislike one another. In Pilot, Murphy and John Mbege attack Wells after rudely speaking about his father. Finn saves Wells and later that night Murphy, Bellamy, and Mbege remove Wells' wristband forcefully. In Murphy's Law, Murphy is accused of murdering Wells and as a result is beaten and hanged.

Monty Green[]

Main article: Monty and Murphy
"8 people alone in space for 5 years, and one of them's John Murphy. I should have drank the tea."
- Monty on spending years in space with Murphy[src]

The relationship between Monty and Murphy is often a contentious one, starting with Murphy's desire to kill Jasper Jordan. The two work together, though often reluctantly. In "Praimfaya," Monty sarcastically commented that he should've "drank the tea" rather than spend five years in space with Murphy, a reference to Jasper's drugged tea he used to kill himself, suggesting that Monty thought death was better than 5 years with Murphy in an enclosed space. However, after Murphy abandoned Monty to get the oxygen generator to the others, Monty hugged Murphy and commented that he might not hate him anymore, something that Murphy was visibly pleased with.

In Season Five, the two are shown to have a better relationship after six years together in space. In "Damocles (Part 2)," Monty refuses to abandon the injured Murphy to die and Murphy goes so far as to allow his friend to carry him rather than leave Emori behind. In his video diary, Monty comments that Murphy was his son's favorite in the stories, something that Monty finds surprising.

After learning of Monty's death in "Sanctum," Murphy is visibly devastated by his friend's loss. When Echo defended her agreement with taking a risk to explore Sanctum because she trusted Monty, Murphy immediately nodded in agreement with her.

Emori[]

Main article: Murphy and Emori
"Thank you for saving my life."
- Emori to Murphy[src]

While traveling in the Dead Zone, Jaha's group is surprised by Emori who jumps out at them. After calming, Jaha says to give her water, Murphy is the first to get some out. Caspian tries to stop him but Murphy threatens him and hands over the water. After giving her name, Emori gives the water can back saying thanks to Murphy who says it's no problem and smiles a little as she walks away. As they walk, Murphy and Emori share their stories and neither is scared or repulsed at the other. Emori's hand is disfigured which Murphy says is "badass". They both smile as she walks away. Later she pulls a knife on him to force the group to surrender, as she puts him on his knees, she whispers something in his ear and says "Good luck, John" (using his first name, the first person to do it beside Jaha) then knocks him out. As he wakes up, Murphy tells Jaha that Emori said "Due North" and heads that way against Caspian's objections.

In Season Three, once Murphy is released from his 3-month containment, he goes to the beach where he is reunited with Emori who looks delighted to see him. They both follow Jaha through his journey. During their trip, they flirt a lot. Later, after Murphy helps to save her, Emori kisses his cheek and thanks him. When Jaha's man has Emori by the throat, Murphy threatens to "drown the bitch in the red dress" if he does not release her so the man releases her. Murphy and Emori escape on the boat. Later, they are seen doing a tag-team robbery where they flirt again and this time Emori kisses him on the lips. In Season Six, the two become engaged.

In Season Seven, Murphy and Emori actively live together and try to keep things together on Sanctum. Emori admits an attraction to Murphy's more heroic side that emerges as he takes up a leadership role over the Sanctumites.

Ontari[]

Main article: Murphy and Ontari
"Stop talking, worm."
- Ontari to Murphy[src]
Ontari and Murphy have a complicated sexual and abusive relationship. Upon meeting for the first time, Ontari verbally and physically abuses Murphy. Despite the abuse, they both flirt with each other. Ontari doesn't mind being naked in front of Murphy and Murphy doesn't bother to look away. In Fallen, Murphy proposes to be Ontari's "fake flamekeeper" to her "fake commander". Reluctant at first, Ontari accepts his advice. Later that episode, Ontari chains Murphy while she undresses in front of him. She then proposes for them to have sex to which Murphy refuses, telling her about Emori. Ontari asks him if Emori would kill him for cheating on her and threatens his life. Murphy ends up giving in while murmuring "the things I do to survive".

Abby[]

Main article: Murphy and Abigail
During their interactions, Murphy and Abby are shown to be friends and allies. Murphy even risks his life in "Sic Semper Tyrannis" to help Marcus Kane save Abby. However, in Season Six, Murphy's deal with Josephine Lightbourne leads to him helping the Prime to manipulate Abby into making new Nightblood. After getting the new Nightblood, Russell Lightbourne sacrifices Abby to resurrect his deceased wife Simone Lightbourne. In Season Seven, Murphy is shown to carry enormous guilt over Abby's death, believing himself to be responsible for it when Emori and even Clarke don't blame him.

Indra[]

At first, much of Indra's interactions with Murphy were negative with Indra being the one to hold him captive and then as an agent of biological warfare. However, their relationship greatly improves over time.

In Season Seven, with Clarke gone, Indra works together closely with Murphy and Emori to hold things together on Sanctum. Murphy and Emori are two of the very few people Indra lets into her confidence about Sheidheda's resurrection and it is them who convinces Indra that she is the leader that Wonkru needs. Murphy later tells Sheidheda that he doesn't think Indra trusts him since no one does, but the Dark Commander states that Indra must trust him to let Murphy in on her Sheidheda secret. Indeed, Indra is shown to trust and rely on Murphy and to a degree Emori greatly as the threat of Sheidheda lessens the number of trustworthy allies she has. After taking Luca to Murphy for safety, the two even share a bit of banter before Indra tells Murphy that she is proud of him.

Sheidheda[]

Sheidheda and Murphy first directly interacted in "The Queen's Gambit", when Murphy brought him his food. Sheidheda recognized instantly that Murphy knew he was him and not Russell, as he was scared of him, though Murphy tried to dissuade it, Sheidheda saw right through it. They engaged in a game of chess: both threw insults at the other, with Sheidheda mocking Murphy's commitment to Emori and his need to be loved while Murphy threw it right back saying how everyone hates Sheidheda and loves Lexa. The game continues, and ultimately, Sheidheda comes out on top as Murphy figures out too late what he's doing, keeping him away from Emori's ceremony. Sheidheda confesses he like Murphy as he amuses him, but to not underestimate him and his goals, going as far to pin him to the table so he can't escape.

Murphy is shown to have a understanding of the way Sheidheda works from their interactions, being the first to deduce what is actually going on in "The Flock" and accurately predicting the Dark Commander's moves in "A Little Sacrifice," comparing it to their chess game. Despite knowing it puts himself and Emori in danger, Murphy protects the remaining Sanctumites from the Dark Commander's wrath, knowing that he will intend to target them. Murphy predicts Sheidheda's win over Indra and moves preemptively to get the people to safety just in case which proves to be a wise precaution.

Connor: "I put the rope around your neck. Why are you helping me?"
John Murphy: "Bygones."
-- in I Am Become Death
John Murphy (after killing Connor): "Bygones."

John Murphy: "You got it all wrong, Bellamy. I don't want you to say anything. I want you to feel what I felt, and then... I want you to die"
-- in We Are Grounders (Part 1)
John Murphy: "Well, I think the Princess is dead, but I know the King's about to die, so who's really going to lead these people, huh? Me, that's who, and, yeah, maybe I'll have to kill your Grounder-pounding little sister..."
-- in We Are Grounders (Part 1)
John Murphy: "You know, I got to hand it to you, Bellamy. You got 'em all fooled. They actually look up to you, almost as much as they look up to Clarke. Yeah, well, we know the truth, don't we? You're a coward. I learned that the day you kicked out the crate from beneath me."
-- in We Are Grounders (Part 1)
John Murphy: "You're so brave, aren't you? I mean, you came in here thinking you're just gonna turn this whole thing around, that you were stronger than me, and maybe one of your friends would come and help you. Well, what are you thinking now, Bellamy? Hmm?"
-- in We Are Grounders (Part 1)

John Murphy (to Raven): "Dying, same as you."
-- in The 48
John Murphy (to Raven): "I don't want to die alone."
-- in The 48
Raven Reyes: "How does a kid who's loved by his parents turn into a murdering psychopath?"
John Murphy: "He gets the flu. His father steals medicine that turns out wouldn't help anyway. Gets floated for it and his mother, she starts drinking pretty heavily after that and last words she says to him before he finds her in a pool of her own vomit is that is that he killed his father."
Raven Reyes: "Boo-hoo."
-- in The 48
John Murphy: "That was me at the Grounder camp. You know, I did everything I could not scream, but eventually..."
Bellamy Blake: "...but eventually, you broke and you told them everything."
John Murphy: "And you wouldn't have because you're better than me.
Bellamy Blake: "Damn right. I'm not a traitor. I didn't tell them where they could find us."
John Murphy: "And I did. Yeah, I did. After they tortured me in their prison camp for 3 days, but go ahead. You just keep believing, even if you are in here just like me."
-- in Inclement Weather
John Murphy (to Bellamy): "You thought I was the crazy one, huh?"
-- in Reapercussions
John Murphy (to Bellamy): "Do I get a gun now?"
-- in Reapercussions
John Murphy (to Bellamy): "I'd say he heard one too many of your motivational speeches."

John Murphy: "Don't worry, Bellamy, I won't drop you."
-- in Many Happy Returns
John Murphy (to Bellamy): "Parting, such sweet sorrow, right?"
-- in Many Happy Returns
John Murphy (to Finn): "These people don't look like warriors, Finn. And there's kids. Old people. There's nothing big enough here to hold our friends."
-- in Human Trials
John Murphy (to Finn): "I think I liked you better as a peacemaker."
-- in Human Trials
John Murphy: "These people are scavengers, Finn. They could've just found that stuff."
Finn Collins: [pins a woman to the ground with a gun to her head]
John Murphy: "Hey, Finn, stop! Stop! Look at me. Finn, don't do this. Let's just walk out of here while we still can, okay? Finn. Please."
-- in Human Trials
John Murphy: "Look, just because their clothes are here, doesn't mean anything."
Finn Collins: "He told us our friends were here. Why would he do that?"
John Murphy: "The guy with one eye? Maybe because you had a gun to his head, Finn."
Nyko: "The man with one eye. You saw Delano. A snake. A thief. He and his men were cast out. You are his revenge."
John Murphy: "It makes sense, Finn. Okay, we need to go. Now."
-- in Human Trials
John Murphy (to Clarke): "Check it out. Salvaged Monty's still from the drop ship. Now, I guess, you know, if they could just salvage Monty, huh? Easy. It was just a joke."
-- in Fog of War
John Murphy: "You know, you want to start blaming people, Clarke? He was out there looking for you."
-- in Spacewalker
John Murphy (to Penn): "I'm sorry, man. I don't speak Grounder."

John Murphy (to Emori about her mutation): "I wouldn't cover it up. I think it's pretty bad-ass."
-- in Rubicon
John Murphy: "A shower would be nice right about now. Wash off the rest of Harris."
-- in Bodyguard of Lies
John Murphy (to Jaha): "What level of crazy is too much for you? I'm just curious."
-- in Bodyguard of Lies
John Murphy (to Harris): "I will take Jaha's staff and beat you to death with it."
-- in Bodyguard of Lies

John Murphy: "Eighty-six days. I'm on my last box of food so...really never thought I'd miss the Ark this much. Anyway, Jaha if your seeing this and that would indeed mean you're not dead so screw you."
-- in Wanheda (Part 1)
Jaha: "No pain, no hate, no envy."
John Murphy: "No thanks."
Jaha: "John."
John Murphy: "No. Pain, hate, envy those are the ABC's of me. Hey, get rid of them and there's nothing left."
-- in Wanheda (Part 1)
John Murphy (to Emori): Come on really; are you about to steal from the people you steal for?"
-- in Wanheda (Part 2)
Titus: "You do not belong here."
John Murphy: "Really? Why does my blood decorate your floor?"
-- in Stealing Fire
Ontari: "You're not afraid of me?"
John Murphy: "I don't scare easily. Truth is, I think what you did was smart. A little crazy maybe. But, we do what we do to survive."
Ontari: "You know I plan to wipe out your people?"
John Murphy: "So, I've heard. Sucks for them."
-- in Stealing Fire
John Murphy (to Indra) "Listen to me! Our real enemy is out there. Jaha has an army of chipped soldiers. They don't feel any pain. That means they're not gonna stop until all of us either join them or die."
John Murphy (to Pike): "Go float yourself. Everything I learned, I learned on the ground."
-- in Join or Die

Echo: "What's he doing?"
Emori: "He's being John Murphy."

-- in Sic Semper Tyrannis
John Murphy: "This is my masterpiece."
-- in Sic Semper Tyrannis
Monty (to group while discussing how they will survive): "Algae?"
John Murphy: "Uhh, float me now."
-- in Damocles (Part 2)

Clarke Griffin: "You're not coming?"
John Murphy: "You killed her. All she did was help and you killed her!"
Emori: "We're staying."
John Murphy: "We're gonna save our people."
Clarke Griffin: "I'm proud of you, Murphy."
John Murphy: "Just so you know, Josephine called me John."
-- in Adjustment Protocol
John Murphy: "Being a god should be more fun than this."
-- in The Blood of Sanctum
John Murphy (to Zev): "I'm sorry about this. You really do seem like a nice guy. Good kisser, too."
-- in The Blood of Sanctum

John Murphy: "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right."
Emori: "Stop it. Here. Listen to this. Kaylee changed because of love too. Isaac, a Null, made her see what they'd become."
John Murphy: "Aww. Farmer loving the pig she leads to the slaughter."
-- in From the Ashes
Raven Reyes: "Good. You're here."
John Murphy: "Shouldn't we be wearing Hazmat suits or something?"
Raven Reyes: "You are adorable. Those literally do nothing against gamma rays. Eligius III knew that, which is why they don't have any. What they did have is Nightblood, and so do you. You're a Prime now, Murphy. Act like one."
Indra: "Get to the point."
Raven Reyes: "Here's the deal. The core's overheating. One of the control rods that slows the nuclear reaction down is jammed in the up position and won't drop into the core. Because of that it's getting too hot, and because of that, the coolant pipe has burst in two places. If the core temperature reaches 1,500 degrees, the reactor will melt down, and it's bye-bye Sanctum."
Clarke Griffin: "So how do we stop it?"
Raven Reyes: "We push in the control rods, we plug the cracks, we're good."
Indra: "Just that simple."
Raven Reyes: "I like you. Someone has to go into primary containment to get the control rods in place. It's a high-radiation environment. Nightblood's not a guarantee, but it will help."
Clarke Griffin: "I'll do it."
John Murphy (at the same time): "She'll do it. (everyone looks at him) What? Like that was even a question?"
Indra: "Clarke, you have your hands full with Russell's execution."
Raven Reyes: "Ok. Murphy, you're B-team. Emori will handle the control rods, but she only has 60 seconds. If she doesn't get it done, you take over. Wonkru will handle the pipes."
Indra: "Emori said radiation is leaking. What kind of danger am I sending my people into?"
Raven Reyes: "It's the puking for a few days kind. If they're exposed, they'll recover. If the core melts down, we won't."
Clarke Griffin: "Why don't we ask the Eligius crew? They were miners. They have the skills."
Raven Reyes: "No offense, but I'm not willing to put the lives of what's left of the human race in the hands of a bunch of murderers and thieves who were torturing me and Shaw and willing to kill the rest of us before destroying the Earth. I need a team of four from the bunker's maintenance crew."
Indra: "You'll have them. Four Wonkru welders coming right up."
-- in False Gods
Raven Reyes (to Murphy): "I may not be able to rely on them, but you will do anything to save your own ass."
Computer: "Secondary containment sealed."
Raven Reyes: "Go be a cockroach."
-- in False Gods
Hatch: "Xenon gas, huh? You're one of the Primes. Means you have that blood alteration. No wonder they chose you and your lady for the core."
John Murphy: "Let's say we talk after the meltdown, huh?"
Hatch: "Alright, but, you see, I--I've got someone that I love out there, and from what I saw, yeah, you do too. No matter what, we get this done."
-- in False Gods
John Murphy: "You guys are supposed to be the worst of the worst. Bank robber doesn't sound so bad."
Hatch: "Yeah, it wasn't until it became homicide. Hell, it was fun until then, too. Nikki -- she shot first. Once those first two cops were dead, hell, it was already a murder rap, so we executed the hostages. Leave no witnesses, am I right?"
John Murphy: "Maybe this will make up for it."
Hatch: "There's no making up for it."
-- in False Gods
Raven Reyes: "Oh god. I did this."
John Murphy: "Yeah, you did. How the mighty have fallen. Welcome to the world of gray."
-- in False Gods
Nikki: "What the hell is taking so long? (sees the bodies) You said this was safe. He trusted you. Liar! Murderer!"
John Murphy: "Listen, I know how you feel but this solves nothing. Stop it!"
Nikki: "I'll make you die for this!"
-- in False Gods
Indra: "Where are the guns? What do you want?"
Nikki: "My husband back. Tell Raven I said bang, bang."
John Murphy: "Huh. You thought Diyoza was a handful."
-- in Nakara
Emori: "Indra, what is it? Let us help."
Indra: "Sheidheda."
Emori: "What? In Madi? But I thought--"
Indra: "Not in Madi. In Russell. When we removed the Flame from Madi, Sheidheda's consciousness disappeared into the computer. From there, it jumped into the..."
John Murphy and Indra: "Mind Drive."
John Murphy: "Yeah."
Emori: "So kill him."
John Murphy: "We can't. Fanatics think he's Russell. They'll burn it all down. Of course, if we tell them he isn't Russell, they'll still burn it all down. Either way, their god is dead."
Emori: "Which will be the least of our worries because if we tell them, Wonkru will know Sheidheda is back."
John Murphy: "You really think they'd follow him?"
Indra: "Sangedakru would, and eventually, the others would kneel. I've seen it before. That's why we need Madi."
John Murphy: "No, that is why we need you. I mean, come on, Indra. We weren't actually in that bunker, but I don't think it takes a genius to figure out who was really running things down there while Octavia was painting her face with blood. Besides, who's bossier than you?"
Indra: "I'm a soldier, a warrior. That's my role, always has been."
Emori: "Indra, the fact that you don't want it, it's why you should do it."
Indra: "Get rid of this."
John Murphy: "Can we at least watch?"
Indra: "No."
John Murphy: "I'm gonna watch."
-- in Nakara
John Murphy: "You like this. Being the queen of the castle, being worshipped."
Emori: "Don't be ridiculous. 'Sides, you've worshipped me for years."
-- in The Queen's Gambit
Eric Jackson: "We need a plan."
John Murphy: "Alright. Well here's what we are working with. They have a lot of guns. Wonkru won't listen to us. I am 150 pounds wet and you can't fight to save your life.
Indra: "Guard the door. I'm gone for half a day and now the palace is surrounded with armed COGs and convicts?"
John Murphy: "Where have you been?"
Eric Jackson: "We have a situation."
Indra: "I heard the announcement."
John Murphy: "I'm sure Nelson wants us Primes to tell the Faithful we're full of crap."
Indra: "Or he wants to kill you."
John Murphy: "Where's everyone else? They asked for Raven too."
Indra: "All we found were bodies and blood at Gabriel's camp... Not our people. There was no trace of them. We left a unit in the field to keep searching. I was afraid to stay out too long and I'm afraid I'm right considering what I just walked in on. Gaia is with them, too, but they can take care of themselves. Obviously, you can't."
Eric Jackson: "Nate was with them."
John Murphy: "We'll get Nate and Gaia back, but we have 18 minutes to save Emori."
Indra: "How? We can't give them Raven."
John Murphy: "You're not gonna like it -- hell I don't like it -- but we could give them me and Russell. 2 out 3 ain't bad."
Indra: "You want to let Sheidheda go free? That's exactly what he wants us to do."
John Murphy: "It's hardly free."
Indra: "It is still out of my control."
John Murphy: "It'll at least buy us some time, ok, time for you to gather Wonkru for a frontal assault. I don't care if it's what he wants, I'm going in one way or the other. I won't let her die, Indra."
Indra: "Sheidheda won't just volunteer for this."
John Murphy: "Well then I guess we'll just have to persuade the bastard."
-- in The Flock
Sheidheda: "Russell had all you fools convinced he was a God."
John Murphy: "Where's Indra?"
Sheidheda: "If that guy really was a God, why was it so easy for me to kill him and take his body? I am not Russell Lightbourne. I wear his body as my host. Your Primes are gone forever."
-- in The Flock
John Murphy: "Wait. Ok. It wasn't Raven's idea to use your people, ok, it was mine. It was mine."
Nikki: "You're just saying that to save her life."
John Murphy: "Heroing's not really my thing... but Hatch, he was a better man than me. He was a good man."
Nikki: "You take his name out of your lying mouth."
John Murphy: "He was a true-blue hero. He saved all of us, Nikki, so think about it. If you kill these people it's sort of like spitting all over his good work."
-- in The Flock
John Murphy: "Indra, what are you doing?"
Indra: "Killing a demon. Do you have a problem with that? Good. Get some rest. You've both had a long day."
Emori: "We should go, before they come for us. What?"
John Murphy: "This is what he wanted. Open the door!"
Penn: "Only on Indra's word."
John Murphy: "Listen. It's not one man screaming. Sheidheda's killing them."
Knight: "What did you just say?"
Sheidheda (in Trigedasleng) "Open the door! My fight is just beginning!"
-- in The Flock
Sheidheda (in Trigedasleng): "Friends of the Twelve Clans..."
Indra: "He's broadcasting from the palace."
John Murphy: "Madi, come with us."
Sheidheda (in Trigedasleng): "I have something important to tell you. You have been lied to. The one you have chosen to follow..."
Indra: "Let's move! We know where he is."
Sheidheda (in Trigedasleng): "Indra kom Trikru... told you the time of the Commanders is over..."
Indra: "I gave you an order!"
Sheidheda (in Trigedasleng): "She lied to you. All this time, she knew that a true Commander was among us."
Indra: "Keep Madi safe."
Sheidheda (in Trigedasleng): "She kept me in chains. But no more."
John Murphy: "Go get the bastard."
-- in A Little Sacrifice
Emori: "So, what now?"
John Murphy: "That's tomorrow's problem. Today we survive, all of us."
Emori: "Don't look now, John, but I think you just might be someone worth believing in."
-- in A Little Sacrifice
John Murphy: "Of course we'll kneel. Was there ever any question?"
Penn: "These are yours." (tosses down Murphy and Emori's clothes)
John Murphy: "Ah. Why do I get the feeling this is goodbye?"
Sheidheda: "The palace is mine now. So is the farmhouse. For you, that means --"
Emori: "We'll take the machine shop."
John Murphy: "You need a mechanic to run the reactor. She's your girl. Besides, you wouldn't want your favorite chess partner to live in a tent, would you?"
Sheidheda: "Fine. Go."
-- in The Stranger
Indra: "Do you have any weapons?"
John Murphy: "Nuclear reactor count?"
Indra: "I'm proud of you, Murphy."
John Murphy: "Yeah. Get in line."
-- in The Stranger
John Murphy: "Hey. How do I look on camera?"
Emori: "Oh, good. She followed Indra?"
John Murphy: "Yeah. You know, I'm starting to miss being a live coward."
-- in The Stranger
John Murphy: "You know, actually, I've been wondering about something. You think Hatch would've kneeled? I bet he would've. I think he probably would've even made Sheidheda think he was working for him. He wouldn't have actually done the work, though, would he? Yeah. That's what I thought. You see that patch over there? Hatch and I welded that into place. See, he already knew he was gonna die. All his men were down and Raven, in one of her more questionable moments that I nevertheless respect, locked me in here with him. She didn't think he was gonna finish the job once he knew, but he did. You know why? (Nikki shakes her head) To save you. That's what he said. Now if you don't stop freaking out, we are gonna have to hold you in the core, where the radiation from the reactor that he helped keep from melting down will eventually kill you. His sacrifice will be worthless. Personally, I don't wanna see that happen. Do you? (Nikki shakes her head) Good. Look. When this is all over, we'll drink to him in the tavern, ok? (Nikki nods) Ok. (to Emori) Alright, I'm awesome."
-- in The Stranger
Clarke Griffin: "What the hell happened here?"
John Murphy: "Gee, where to begin?"
-- in The Stranger
John Murphy: "Invisibility and ray guns I can accept. That needs some explaining though."
-- in Blood Giant
Clarke Griffin: "Tell me Madi's safe with Gaia."
Indra: "We thought Gaia was with you."
John Murphy: "Madi's safe for now."
-- in Blood Giant
John Murphy: "Hey, so what's our play here?"
Bellamy Blake: "Our play?"
John Murphy: "Don't get me wrong, you look good - not as good as me - but I know a thing or two about pretending to be something you're not."
Bellamy Blake: "This isn't an act, Murphy. I'm trying to save us all. I don't expect you to understand. Just know that I am your friend and I'm looking out for you."
John Murphy: "That's very reassuring. I'm just gonna..." (walks further ahead)
-- in Blood Giant
Raven Reyes: "So, Sheidheda's alive and Madi's in a nuclear reactor? You did good."
John Murphy: "All of our friends are missing and Bellamy is a sheep. So did you."
-- in Blood Giant
John Murphy: "So just to recap: the Shepherd over there is the same guy who built the bunker that saved humanity from Praimfaya... twice. And now he wants the Flame, broken, by you so he can start a war with... whoever built the Stones in order to turn all of us into... beings of light."
Raven Reyes: "Yep."
John Murphy: "Ah. Is it weird to me that the craziest part of all of this is Bellamy's robe?"
Raven Reyes: "Nope. Echo and Octavia are hostages and... look at him."
John Murphy: "Yeah, well. Not to point out the obvious, but we're hostages, too."
Raven Reyes: "Yeah, but something happened to him out there."
-- in Blood Giant
John Murphy: "Time to play another round of Who Wants To Murder Your Friends?"
-- in Blood Giant
John Murphy: "We should be going with them to Ryker's Keep, or maybe you'd like to drown me again in the pond."
-- in Blood Giant
Madi Griffin: "It's so green."
John Murphy: "Earth is back."
-- in A Sort of Homecoming
Echo: "Where's Bellamy?"
Octavia Blake: "Clarke?"
Clarke Griffin: "Dead. He's dead."
John Murphy: "Bellamy? Clarke, he was fine when we left. I'm a little confu---."
Clarke Griffin: "I killed him. I had to."
Echo: "Why?"
Clarke Griffin: "Madi's sketchbook, he had it and he knew that she still has the memories of the Commander. She would never be safe. I begged him to stop. I tried to get the book back, but he... I tried everything, I promise. I tried. I'm so sorry."
Octavia Blake: "I understand. So would the old Bellamy. The one that would do anything for his baby sister and the people he loved."
Clarke Griffin: "You can hate me if you want to, god knows I do."
Echo: "We lost him a long time ago. He needed all this chaos to make sense, all the violence, all the people we've killed. He couldn't accept that it's all meaningless. Cadogan gave him meaning, and that meaning is what killed him... not you."
-- in A Sort of Homecoming
John Murphy: "That's it I'm out of here. Where's the funky ball with the green light?"
-- in A Sort of Homecoming
John Murphy: "Clarke is wrong. Some of those people are from here, Raven, Wonkru, Eligius Prisoners. Earth is their home, too. Let me ask you something. When you let Hatch and his buddies die, was that just to save your friends?"
Raven Reyes: "We passed a workshop down here."
John Murphy: "6 years of watching Bellamy manipulate her on the Ring. Damn it."
Emori: "I know. I miss him, too."
John Murphy: "Yeah."
-- in A Sort of Homecoming
John Murphy: "What is taking you so long?"
Raven Reyes: "Miracles take time. Hero Murphy's kinda freaking me out."
Emori: "I know... but it's hot."
John Murphy: "I'm right here and also I'm not a hero, I just think the people on Sanctum deserve to live on a planet that doesn't eat them or occasionally drive them insane."
-- in A Sort of Homecoming
John Murphy: "Hey. We haven't, um, properly met, I am..."
Hope Diyoza: "John Murphy. I've heard stories."
John Murphy: "I tend to play well in stories."
Hope Diyoza: "Hmm. Not these."
John Murphy: "Those stories. Yes. You ok?"
Jordan Green: "Hey, Murphy? I... got this."
John Murphy: "Ok. I was his favorite though, wasn't I Jordan?"
-- in A Sort of Homecoming
Clarke Griffin: "Murphy, give it up, it's never gonna break."
John Murphy (Murphy breaks the window): "You were saying?"
Jordan Green: "Nice job, Murphy!"
John Murphy: "All in a day's work, my friends."
-- in A Sort of Homecoming
Octavia Blake: "In peace, may you leave this shore. In love..."
Hope Diyoza: "No!"
Octavia Blake: "May you find the next. Safe passage on your travels until our final journey on the ground."
Gabriel Santiago (in Spanish) "Death is life."
Octavia Blake: "May we meet again."
Jordan Green, Hope Diyoza, Clarke Griffin, John Murphy, Emori, Nathan Miller and Eric Jackson: "May we meet again."
-- in A Sort of Homecoming
John Murphy: "Emori, Emori, say something!"
Emori: "Something."
-- in The Dying of the Light
Eric Jackson: "I can't do surgery out of my pack. I need an actual surgical theater, sterile equipment, medicine. I need to get to Sanctum."
Raven Reyes: "The helmet showed me the Stone was in the rec room. We find it, open the bridge and jump over."
Emori: "What about Madi? What about the rest of our friends?"
Raven Reyes: "We will worry about them later. Right now, you are the priority."
John Murphy: "Yeah. Damn right. We only have one problem. We couldn't find the Stone."
Raven Reyes: "Just because you can't see something, doesn't mean it's not there."
-- in The Dying of the Light
John Murphy: "Why is there an Azgeda symbol on the floor?"
Raven Reyes: "Don't know, don't care. All I know is, X marks the spot."
-- in The Dying of the Light
John Murphy: "We got to go now! (to Jackson) Thank you."
Eric Jackson: "We're not losing anyone else."
John Murphy: "We'll come back for Miller. Let's go."
-- in The Dying of the Light
John Murphy: "I remember that. The place we first met. Love at first knife to throat. Oh, you are so beautiful."
Emori: "John, where are we?"
John Murphy: "Josephine called it the Mindspace. If it were up to me I would've chosen our cave, but..."
Emori: "I died."
John Murphy: "You did. Not acceptable."
Emori: "You put my Mind Drive in your head. Two minds, one body. You'll die, too. You have to take it out."
John Murphy: "Without you, I'd just be surviving, Emori, I wouldn't be living."
Emori: "No, no."
John Murphy: "Hey, hey. I would take a few more hours with you over forever without."
Emori: "No, no, no. You can't do this. I won't let you do this, so wake up."
John Murphy: "Emori..."
Emori: "Wake up. Just wake up! (shoves Murphy) Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! Jackson! Jackson! Wake him up!"
John Murphy: "Emori."
Emori: "Don't let him do this! Jackson! John! John! (Murphy grabs her) Let go of me!"
John Murphy: "Stop! Stop! This is ok with me."
Emori: "No, it's not ok with me."
John Murphy: "It's ok, it's ok." (music begins playing)
Emori: "What is that? (Murphy laughs) What?"
John Murphy: "The last time I asked you to dance you stabbed me with a butcher knife."
Emori: "Relationships."
John Murphy: "Yeah." (Murphy and Emori dance together)

Clarke Griffin: "I don't wanna be alone."
The Judge (as Lexa) "You're not."
Clarke Griffin: "What do you want?"
The Judge: "To explain."
Clarke Griffin: "There's no need. I get it. I bear it so they don't have to. Again."
The Judge: "Such a curious species. You've added so much to us already. I'm glad to have been wrong about you."
Clarke Griffin: "Wait. Does that mean... you're here to take me with you?"
The Judge: "No. You can never join us, Clarke. Your actions must have a cost."
Clarke Griffin: "Just mine? Am I the only human being who ever sinned?"
The Judge: "Of course not. But you are the only test subject from any species anywhere in the universe since the dawn of time who committed murder during a test."
Clarke Griffin: "I'd do it again."
The Judge: "Madi knew you'd say that."
Clarke Griffin: "Madi's with you then?"
The Judge: "In a manner of speaking, yes. Her consciousness has joined ours. She's at peace. She'll never feel pain, she'll never die. She knew that living here without anyone her own age to love is something you wouldn't have wanted for her even if it meant you being alone. I suppose that choice was made easier with the realization that you wouldn't be."
Clarke Griffin: "Transcendence is a choice? You can choose to come back?"
The Judge: "Of course. Though, until now, no one ever had. (Clarke sees her friends nearby) There won't be offspring, and they won't join us when they die. None of them seem to care."
John Murphy: "Hey. There she is."
Niylah: "Clarke!"
The Judge: "A curious species, indeed."

Notes and Trivia[]

  • John Murphy may be descended from The Grounder Karl Murphy.
  • In "Pilot," he is the second Sky Person who set foot on the ground after Octavia Blake.
  • John Murphy is the third Sky Person to have a sentimental relationship with a Grounder.
  • His full name is Jonathan Murphy.[1] The name "Jonathan" has never been used in the series, with most people calling him "Murphy". The only people that have called him "John" are Emori, Thelonious Jaha, Abby Griffin, Luna, David Miller, Josephine Lightbourne, Russell Lightbourne and Sheidheda.
  • Murphy was originally called "John #1" to differentiate him from "John #2" (John Mbege).[2] Murphy and Mbege share the same initials.
    • Richard said that he wasn't supposed to stick around longer, Jason emailed him after shooting "Pilot" that Jason liked what he did, so he was given the last name and stayed longer.[3]
  • He is one of many characters that starts out as an antagonist but slowly becomes a protagonist.
  • Richard Harmon thinks that Murphy's father died when he was 10 years old, his mother died 1-2 years later, and he got arrested at 13.[4]
  • Murphy is the only living member of the 100 who has never been inside Mount Weather.[5]
  • Murphy wanted to kill himself in "Wanheda (Part 1)," but could not get himself to fire the gun.
  • He is smarter than he lets on – he survived several attempts on his life and found out the details of A.L.I.E. before anyone else. He knows how to survive: he teamed up with Finn,[6][7][8] complimented Ontari's actions as "smart", and kept Ontari's secret in order to keep his life.[9][10][11]
  • Murphy has similar traits to Roger from Lord of the Flies. They embrace the anarchism and lack of authority, most violent members of the group, sadistic, and were originally friendly with the leaders. Unlike Roger, Murphy has largely redeemed himself over the years and become close with the people he once antagonized.
  • The actor who plays John Murphy, Richard Harmon, is brother to Jessica Harmon, who plays Niylah.
  • Murphy has redeemed himself and no longer cares for just himself as he can go back to his violent and aggressive nature when those he loves are threatened, like when he threatened Clarke Griffin in "God Complex." In "The Blood of Sanctum," Murphy decided to risk himself to save the Sanctum Citizens, people he didn't even know, as he was the only who could help Gabriel Santiago, though he was reluctant at first. Together, the two subdued the people, who were all under a mind-altering toxin and prevented any more innocent people from dying. Initially he had only stayed behind to help his own friends, but was convinced by Emori to help everyone else.
  • He struggles with purpose when he hasn't got to fight to survive.
  • Many characters hold his previous actions against him, especially the two murders he committed in Season One, despite the fact that he now has one of the lowest kill counts, particularly for a main character.
    • Seasons Four, Six and Seven are the only seasons that Murphy didn't kill or indirectly kill anyone.
  • John Murphy, Octavia Blake, Clarke Griffin, and Eric Jackson are the only four named characters seen in the "Pilot" that are currently known to be alive.
    • Murphy is one of four named Delinquents currently known to be alive. The others are Octavia Blake, Clarke Griffin, and Nathan Miller.
  • Murphy is the only main character who never spoke nor never been with Lincoln.
  • Murphy has been hurt multiple times over the six seasons, in the most different ways: Season 1, beaten, hanged, tortured, poisoned and stabbed. He is beaten and tortured every season following at least twice - he is also knocked unconscious repeatedly. In Season 3, he is whipped and beaten by Titus. In Season Five, he is electrocuted and shot. In Season Six, he is stabbed in the shoulder, and later drowned by Bellamy though Clarke pulls him from the water.
  • In "The Children of Gabriel," Murphy dies briefly before being brought back by Cillian. When he wakes up, he is completely terrified, and knows he died, and says he saw/felt something, that he's going to Hell. He spends the rest of the episode drinking alcohol, worrying some of the group, including Abby.
  • He is one of two major characters in Season Six to die and be revived. The other was Clarke.
  • In Season Six, Murphy takes on something of an antagonistic role again due to Josephine Lightbourne's promises of immortality and his own fears of what he will face after death. However, Murphy ultimately comes down on the side of his friends and does not act as a true antagonist.
  • Due to his past actions, characters often times find it hard to rely on him when he is actually trying to help. In Season Six, Bellamy in particular is not particularly relieved by the idea that Murphy is trying to help them.
  • Murphy becomes the fourth Sky Person to become a Nightblood.
    • His status as a Nightblood, suggested but not outright stated by his new status as a Prime, is confirmed in "False Gods."
  • Murphy is one of the 7 main characters that are still alive till the end of the show.
  • He and Jordan are the only male main characters that still alive at the end of the series.
