James Crockett was a recurring character in the sixth and seventh seasons. He is portrayed by Camden Filtness and debuts in "Red Sun Rising".

He was a Sky Person, and was among the 100 people chosen to stay in the Second Dawn Bunker.

In "False Gods", James was killed when he accidentally triggered a meltdown in Sanctum's nuclear reactor.

Early life[]

James was born on the Ark to an unnamed mother who was an engineer. James followed in his mother's footsteps, becoming her apprentice and then an engineer in his own right. Jacapo Sinclair was his mentor.

He managed to survive the Ark's descent to Earth, conflicts with the Grounders, War Against A.L.I.E. and the second culling, six years in the Second Dawn Bunker and the conflicts with the Eligius Prisoners.

Throughout the Series[]

In Red Sun Rising, Niylah wakes him from cryosleep to get his blood for Kane.

Later, trapped in the mess hall, Octavia mentions his mother to him while asking for his help getting the doors open. She says that his mother kept the bunker running long after Jaha died, and that she'd claimed James was an even better engineer than her. The reference rouses James' anger at Octavia, who he blames for his mother's death at the gorge in Shallow Valley. Later, as Octavia taunts them for being "cowards," James gets annoyed and fed up with her. He punches her in the face, causing a fight as Jordan and Niylah beg them to stop. As James tries to kill Octavia to avenge his mother's death, Abby tells James to stand down and let her live with her past haunting her, invoking Monty's desire to make everyone the good guys. Haunted and devastated, James decides not to kill Octavia.

In What You Take With You, he is seen sitting in the mess hall onboard Eligius IV.

In The Blood of Sanctum, he assists Indra, Gaia, Jackson and Raven in saving Madi from Sheidheda, acting as Raven's assistant in removing the Dark Commander from the Flame. He asks Raven how she learned how to code like she was and she responds "the City of Light community college," leaving James amazed and baffled. However, their attempt to stop Sheidheda is interrupted by Russell Lightbourne. James is later seen walking into Sanctum with Clarke and the others.

In From the Ashes, he runs up to Clarke and Indra to tell them that there is trouble at the palace.

In False Gods, James tends to Sanctum's nuclear reactor which is having troubles only to stop for an interlude with his girlfriend Cora. With the problems continuing, James follows her suggestion of retracting the last control rod, but it gets stuck. Confident that he can fix it due to his mentor Jacapo Sinclair being a genius at jury-rigging the Ark's reactor, James apparently fixes the rod, using a wrench to hold it up, only to have radiation suddenly flood the room, killing James and Cora because he left a wrench in the way when moving the rod.

Their bodies are later found by Raven Reyes and Emori when they check on the reactor. Raven, recognizing that its already too late, stops Emori from trying to help them. Raven realizes that they must've pulled the control rod too fast causing a fatal spike of radiation. As a result, the entire reactor is in danger of melting down and killing everyone on Sanctum.

Personality[]

James Crockett can be calm and kind towards others, in the case of Raven Reyes and his partner Cora. Despite this, he has been shown to become aggressive, notably towards Octavia Blake, whom he attacked as he blames her for his mothers death. Despite Marcus Kane's involvement with his mother's death, he is shown sitting next to him, but it is unknown if he still holds a grudge on him or if he still hates him. However, he did assist with Kane's suicide. It is possible that he knows that Kane only did this to stop the war to save Wonkru and is not considered an enemy or not unremorseful, unlike Octavia who previously showed no remorse. It is also possible that he knows that what Kane did was an accidental mistake. Despite Abby being responsible for Octavia's dark nature that led to the death of his mother and helping Paxton McCreary heal his men to allow them to fight against Octavia that also led to his mother's death, James complies with Abby telling him not to go aggressive on Octavia and not to kill her. However, it is unknown if he still angry at Abby for what Octavia has become that led to his mother's death as he has shown no emotion towards Abby, suggesting he does hate Abby for what she did. It is possible that he needed Abby, since she was an important person as she was a doctor. When Abby resurrected Kane by allowing Simone to erase Gavin's consciousness, it is suggested that James is now against Abby. In Season 7, he is shown that he is confident in his abilities as an engineer as he attempts to fix Sanctum's reactor. However, he failed to do so, resulting in his demise.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • His name is on Clarke’s list, placed on number 21.
  • He indirectly caused his own death and nearly caused a nuclear meltdown: by leaving his wrench on the reactor core, he prevented one of the control rods from descending fully after previously being raised too quickly. The source of the problem is shown when Emori struggles to lower the control rod and discovers that she has to move the wrench to do it.
  • He was a student of Jacapo Sinclair.
