I was trying to take down a system dedicated to the worship of false gods. I became a false god all over again.
— Gabriel to Octavia [src]

Dr. Gabriel Santiago was a major character in the seventh season[1], after appearing as a recurring character in the sixth season. He was portrayed by Ian Pala, Donald Heng, and Chuku Modu, and debuted in "Red Sun Rising".

He was an original member of Mission Team Alpha and the former thirteenth Prime. After a moral awakening, Gabriel defected from the Primes and formed the Children of Gabriel to take down the Primes. His last host was Xavier.

After journeying through the Temporal Anomaly with Hope Diyoza and Echo, he briefly joined the Disciples, ostensibly to finally find the answers he'd been seeking about the Anomaly for over 150 years and to avoid being executed, while secretly plotting against the Disciples. After joining up with Clarke's group again, Gabriel was mortally wounded by Sheidheda while protecting Madi Griffin and refused medical help so as to finally embrace the death that he had been long denied by his multiple resurrections.

Early life

Gabriel was born on Earth and has a grandmother from Colombia. She would make her own kombucha before the rich cut off her drinking water so that they could water their lawns. Gabriel eventually joined the Eligius Corporation and was aware of Bill Cadogan, due to Bill's own reputation of being a Second Dawn cult leader. He was friends with a quantum physicist and Fields Medal winner named Colin Benson. Before the first Nuclear Apocalypse, Gabriel was selected to join Mission Team Alpha to explore life and human survival on Alpha.

Shortly after arriving on Alpha and setting up camp, Gabriel's girlfriend Josephine was killed by her father, Russell Lightbourne, who was under the influence of eclipse-induced psychosis. Following Josephine's death, Gabriel started working with Russell to figure out how to bring her back using their Mind Drives, which already stored her consciousness. He incubated some of the Nightblood embryos they brought from Earth so that he could upload the Mind Drives on the children, but the children always ended up dying because their minds weren't developed enough to hold an entire consciousness. After 25 years of experiments, Gabriel eventually figured out that they needed to use a fully developed brain and erase the host's mind completely in order to upload the entire consciousness from the Mind Drive. This successfully brought Josephine back.

During one of early red suns on Alpha, he became infected with seaweed toxin and he believed he could walk on water. He was then bitten by the Kepa-She and the toxin was removed.

By the time that Josephine was brought back, Gabriel was dying of cancer. Unwilling to lose him, Josephine resurrected Gabriel through his Mind Drive, which he hadn't wanted to happen. After his first resurrection, the two shared a dance and Josephine promised to love Gabriel forever.

Following Gabriel's breakthrough, the Primes started using the Mind Drives to bring themselves back by uploading their consciousness into Nightblood hosts. The Primes at some point started experimenting with the Red Sun toxin, with Simone trying to weaponize it while Gabriel focused on creating an anti-toxin. Gabriel discovered a way to use the toxin to create a waking dream as part of "a happy accident." At some point, he and Russell experimented using Gabriel's variant of the toxin to see if anything of their hosts survived. The experiment showed that nothing of the host survived, but it gave them a revelation about their purposes: Russell's was to make them into gods, while Gabriel's was to stop it from happening.

At some point, despite Gabriel's efforts to stop them, Simone and Josephine started leaving human test subjects outside to study the visions of those who survived being caught out in the eclipse. Because of this, believers in the divinity of the Primes invariably reported seeing them as gods, and started killing non-believers.

Eventually, in 2211, Gabriel started feeling guilty and rebelling against the Primes. To stop the resurrections, Gabriel destroyed the remaining embryos which had been genetically engineered with Nightblood. Simone Lightbourne intended to burn Gabriel at the stake for his actions, but he was helped to escape from Sanctum by Ryker Desai, who left his cell door open. Gabriel formed the Children of Gabriel group to help take down the Primes.

Gabriel trained a null named Eduardo, who was left in the Offering Grove as an infant. He taught him how to remove the Mind Drive so that he wouldn't be brought back. However, as Gabriel was about to die of old age, a Nightblood named Xavier was born. Eduardo saw this as a sign to bring Gabriel back. Gabriel became close with Xavier, who was also like a son to him, and rejected Eduardo's idea that they use Xavier to resurrect him. Gabriel believed that he had talked Eduardo out of it. After Gabriel died, Eduardo went against his wishes and used Xavier as a host to resurrect Gabriel. Gabriel was so upset at him for murdering Xavier that he killed Eduardo.

Since no one else knew about it, Gabriel decided to pose as Xavier among the Children of Gabriel. They assumed that either the "Old Man" Gabriel had died or abandoned them. Gabriel posed as Xavier for ten years, while the Children of Gabriel believed that Eduardo had been killed by the Sanctum Guards around the same time that Gabriel disappeared.

Gabriel was also extremely interested in the Temporal Anomaly on Sanctum. It's implied that he visited it often to see hallucinations of Josephine, who he never stopped loving. According to a comment Gabriel made, he spent at least 150 years studying it by the time the people from Earth arrived; though Gabriel apparently couldn't uncover anything about the Anomaly and how it worked.

Throughout the Series

In Red Sun Rising, Gabriel is seen in a flashback, 236 years ago. It was 21 days after the Mission Team Alpha had arrived on the Moon Alpha. Gabriel was taking photos while his girlfriend, Josie kept interrupting him. As Josie tried to make out with him, they were interrupted by the sound of a sonic noise as the red sun eclipse approached. They went back to the outpost only to find Josie's father, Russell Lightbourne killing people because he was under the influence of the eclipse-induced psychosis. After Russell killed Josie, Gabriel ran and became one of the few survivors.

In The Children of Gabriel, Gabriel is posing as his host, Xavier. He is a member of the Children of Gabriel group that wants to bring an end to the Primes. While some of the members attack the Gagarin to steal the weapons and behead the dead Primes (Victor, Faye and Daniel Lee), Gabriel organizes to kidnap the remaining Royal Bloods - Delilah and Rose - from Sanctum before they are turned into hosts for the Primes. Delilah is rescued by Clarke Griffin, but the Children of Gabriel manage to keep Rose. In the woods they run into Octavia, who dares them to fight her. Gabriel puts on a mask and uses his knowledge of the forest as a weapon by spraying her with a paralyzing spore called "Mace plant" from the ground. As Octavia collapses, he tells her it won't hurt long. He asks his group to carry Octavia with them.

In The Face Behind the Glass, Gabriel, posing as Xavier, and other members of the Children of Gabriel surround Octavia and Rose. Tosh is interrogating Octavia to figure out how many others from Earth have the blood alternation. When Octavia refuses to comply, Tosh becomes more violent, but Xavier halts her, arguing that the Old Man won't approve. When Tosh suggests killing both Octavia and Rose, Xavier pulls out a gun. Tosh yields, the group moves out to meet up with the rest of their unit.

Later, Gabriel approaches Octavia and Rose who are tied to a tree. He sets his pack down and offers them food, but they refuse. When Tosh calls that the rest of their unit is here, Gabriel goes to meet them. Octavia notices a knife in the pack Gabriel left behind and uses it to escape with Rose. The rest of the Children of Gabriel chase after them but are killed by Diyoza when she comes to rescue Rose. Tosh kills Rose before dying, causing Octavia and Diyoza to go on a mission to hunt down the remaining Children of Gabriel - Xavier and The Old Man.

In The Gospel of Josephine, Diyoza and Octavia are chasing Xavier in the woods. He leads them to a swamp-like ground called "the crucible," where they get stuck and begin to sink. He offers to save them if they tell him who else among their people have blood alternation. Octavia asks Diyoza to tell him nothing. Xavier (Gabriel in disguise) tells them that he has a lot more time than they. He advises Octavia them to be calm because the more they struggle, the faster they sink. However, Octavia refuses to listen. Just as she is about to completely sink, they notice a bright flare in the sky. Gabriel says that it is a temporal flare and it's very dangerous. He throws them a rope to escape and run to safety.

Back in Sanctum, Jordan, Bellamy, and Gaia find a secret lab and a computer with video logs. In one of the video logs, Gabriel had just figured out how to bring Josephine back using her Mind Drive after 25 years of failed experiments. In order to successfully upload an entire consciousness into a new host, not only did they need to wipe out the host's consciousness but they needed to upload the Mind Drive to a host with a fully developed mind. The video shows how Gabriel successfully brought Josephine back through her first host, a young woman named Brooke, who was grown from an embryo in the incubator. After that, the Primes started using Gabriel's discovery to bring their loved ones back and essentially live forever.

In Memento Mori, Gabriel, still posing as Xavier, watches from a distance as Octavia and Diyoza strategize on how to find The Old Man. After noticing that Octavia's hand is damaged after being exposed to the temporal flare, Gabriel joins them and offers to help. On their way to retrieve a cure for Octavia, he tells Diyoza that The Old Man is actually Gabriel. He explains that Gabriel had a moral awakening and decided to turn against the Primes. He asks Diyoza to join their cause, but Diyoza refuses because she has an offer to raise her baby in Sanctum. He says that Diyoza's child would be treated as a "Null" since she won't have the black blood. However, Diyoza does not change her mind.

After retrieving the tree sap which is supposed to be the cure, it fails to work on Octavia. Instead Octavia's arm starts spiraling. After noticing the pattern, Gabriel gives her a rock to let the hand draw freely on the ground. She draws a logarithmic spiral, which he recognizes as the shape of the Anomaly where the temporal flare came from. He says that the temporal flare was a message for Octavia that the Anomaly is calling her. After revealing that he has a similar spiral too, Diyoza also confirms the Anomaly call by showing her book full of spirals. They agree to go together to the Anomaly.

In The Old Man and the Anomaly, Gabriel, still posing as Xavier, takes Octavia and Diyoza to the Anomaly. As they get close, he takes them to his secret hiding place to disarm before they go to the Anomaly. In the room, there's a photo of Josephine. After seeing the Mind Drive scar on the back of his neck, Diyoza realizes that Xavier is in fact Gabriel himself in a new host. Gabriel admits it and says that he only has the Mind Drive because he has no one to remove it. He explains to them how he had trained Eduardo to remove the Mind Drive but Eduardo betrayed him by bringing him back through Xavier as a host. Since then, he's been posing as Xavier and letting his own Children of Gabriel think that he abandoned them.

After coming clean to them, Gabriel leads Diyoza and Octavia to the Anomaly to cure Octavia and figure out why the Anomaly is calling Diyoza. On the way, Gabriel keeps getting hallucinations in which he sees Josephine. At the Anomaly, Diyoza sees a vision of her future daughter, Hope. When Diyoza tries to follow Hope, Gabriel cautions her against it because no one has ever returned after entering the Anomaly. However, Diyoza goes against Gabriel and Octavia's warnings and enters into the Anomaly. When Octavia gets close to the Anomaly, Gabriel pulls her out. As they lie side by side, Gabriel looks at Octavia's arm, confirming that she's been healed.

In What You Take With You, Gabriel takes Octavia back to the Verge from the Anomaly where Octavia insists that she doesn't remember anything and points out that she was only in the Anomaly for a few seconds. However, as Octavia returned clean and healed, Gabriel thinks it was probably much longer. She had also come out at a run as if Octavia had been running from something. Gabriel decides to use red sun toxin to help Octavia remember.

After awakening, Octavia tells Gabriel that now she has a renewal of purpose and prepares to take off, only to hear a message from Clarke stating that she is the host of Josephine Lightbourne. Gabriel warns that it means that Clarke is in trouble, which Octavia realizes means all of her friends are in trouble too. Before she can take off to help them, Gabriel reminds Octavia that Clarke's message said that she was coming to them and states that things are about to get weirder.

In Matryoshka, Clarke and Josephine watch a memory of Gabriel and Josephine dancing after their respective first resurrections. Josephine watches the memory in fondness and promises to love Gabriel forever. Instead of floating the memory, Clarke tells Josephine that she can keep it, but they have to move if she wants to survive to see Gabriel again.

In the present, Gabriel and Octavia find Clarke's body at the old blind Gabriel and Josephine spent time at together. The two save her from the vines, and Josephine reveals herself to be in control, reunited with Gabriel for the first time in 70 years. However, the reunion is interrupted by the arrival of Jade and five Sanctum guards to whom Josephine reveals Gabriel's identity, ordering his capture and the execution of Octavia. However, Josephine's condition gets worse and Gabriel insists that he must operate immediately if he is to save her and Clarke. One of the guards suddenly shoots the others and reveals himself to be Octavia's brother Bellamy. Bellamy sends Jade back to Sanctum with a warning for Russell, and Gabriel leads the group back to the Verge.

At the Verge, Gabriel explains that he must temporarily stop Clarke's heart in order to get Josephine to download back into her Mind Drive so that it can be removed. While Bellamy wants to trade it to Russell, Josephine recognizes that Gabriel doesn't want that, as it will mean another resurrection could take another innocent life. Josephine tearfully begs Gabriel to save her so that they can be together for good, but Gabriel, in tears himself, stops Clarke's heart and removes the Mind Drive. However, Gabriel can't revive Clarke as Josephine's mind managed to hang on inside of her. Gabriel believes that it's over and Clarke's body just can't handle the strain of holding two minds anymore. Bellamy desperately tries to revive Clarke despite Gabriel's beliefs, and she suddenly regains consciousness in Bellamy's arms. Sorrowfully, Gabriel watches as Josephine's brain wave pattern flatlines on his EEG, her mind having been destroyed by Clarke.

In Ashes to Ashes, Gabriel works with Clarke, Bellamy and Octavia to try to come up with a plan to save their friends and defeat the Primes. Gabriel urges Bellamy to forgive Octavia and reveals her experiences with the anomaly. When the Children of Gabriel arrive, Gabriel reveals his true identity to them, to the anger of Layla, Xavier's sister. Clarke convinces Gabriel's followers to spare him so that Gabriel can help them weaponize Red Sun toxin to invade Sanctum.

While Octavia and Bellamy are gone, Gabriel and Clarke discuss their plans for using the toxin against Sanctum, with Gabriel expressing reluctance to harm the citizens. As they discuss the toxin further, Clarke and Gabriel come up with a plan to use a lesser dose to simulate a Red Sun eclipse to trigger Sanctum's evacuation alarms so as to spare as many innocent people as possible. As Gabriel no longer knows the code to lower the radiation shield, Clarke discusses posing as Josephine to infiltrate Sanctum and do it herself so that they can launch their attack.

Soon after Octavia and Bellamy return with the toxin, Sanctum guards led by Jade and John Murphy attack. Clarke poses as Josephine to them, claiming that Clarke is really dead. Once they are out of the tent, Clarke pretends to kill Layla and releases her friends to continue with their plan. After seeing Clarke's actions, Layla finally accepts that Clarke really isn't Josephine anymore.

In Adjustment Protocol, Gabriel waits outside of the radiation shield with Bellamy, Octavia and the Children of Gabriel for Clarke to take it down. However, they witness two Sanctum guards discussing an upcoming Naming Day ceremony with multiple Primes. Unwilling to wait and allow Russell to kill more people, Gabriel crosses through the shield and attacks the guard who stayed behind, taking his outfit and motorcycle. In Sanctum, Gabriel releases the Red Sun toxin in the water even though it's too early and surrenders to Sanctum guards, who recognize him. Gabriel is brought before Russell and confronts his old friend over his actions, only to learn that Russell has already resurrected the other Primes. As the Red Sun alarms go off, Russell realizes what Gabriel did and calms the crowd. Gabriel is able to overpower his guards and holds Russell at gunpoint, but can't bring himself to kill him. When more guards arrive, Gabriel surrenders reluctantly rather than shoot Russell when he has the chance.

Gabriel is tied to a chair while the resurrected Primes are brought in. As Russell introduces Murphy and Emori to the resurrected Mason family, Gabriel notices the two holding hands and realizes that they aren't Daniel and Kaylee Lee, informing the two that the Lee's are siblings. After Bellamy forces Priya Desai to admit the truth about the Primes and their hosts, Russell enacts the Adjustment Protocol and releases a massive amount of Red Sun toxin upon the Sanctumites, causing them to go insane and attack each other.

In the midst of the chaos, Simone is revealed to have been resurrected in the host of Abigail Griffin. Gabriel states to "Josephine" that "your mother murdered her mother. Ironic don't you think?" Clarke slaps Gabriel and orders him not to speak to her, asking how "she" could ever love such a traitor, to cover her grief over her mother's death. Simone buys the act and states that "Josephine" at least has closure now in regards to Gabriel. As the Primes prepare to depart for Eligius IV, Russell says goodbye to Gabriel and announces that Sanctum is now Gabriel's, though he suspects that Gabriel won't last very long.

In The Blood of Sanctum, a few members of the Children of Gabriel as well Octavia, Bellamy and Echo are captured by Sanctum believers. A female adjuster kills Layla just as Murphy and Emori enter to try to stop the process and take Bellamy, Echo and Octavia with them into the palace. As the believers realize that Russell Lightbourne and his family have left Sanctum, they start to attack again while the Children of Gabriel are still captured in the tavern.

In the palace Bellamy, Gabriel and Octavia find Jordan in a strange state due the fact that also Jordan had to drink the blood of Sanctum drug. Gabriel asks who will help him to release his captured group. Initially nobody wants to help - only Octavia offers to follow and tries to save the Children of Gabriel group. This allows the others to follow him.

Murphy, pretending to be Daniel Lee, agrees to act as decoy and bring Gabriel to the Sanctum believers for the adjustment procedure. Even after the adjustor Tory sees Gabriel take the Blood of Sanctum, she remains suspicious, walks outside and locks all of the others into the tavern. While Gabriel and Murphy control the inside - Bellamy, Octavia and Echo are fighting against all believers outside and try to stop them from burning down the tavern. Only a risky defense action from Octavia finally stops Tory from setting the tavern on fire.

Gabriel discovers a new tattoo on Octavia's back - Anomaly hieroglyphics, most in black a few in red color - proving that Octavia was much longer in the anomaly than just a few seconds. Gabriel, Octavia, Bellamy and Echo go back to the C.O.G. main camp, where Gabriel shows them the Anomaly Stone hidden under the floor - here Gabriel with Octavia touches all the red symbols they found on Octavia's back. The Anomaly expands rapidly while Octavia hears a person coming closer - it is Hope Diyoza, the young adult daughter of Charmaine Diyoza.

After stabbing Octavia with a knife, Hope falls unconscious into Gabriel's arms. Octavia vanishes into green dust, leaving Bellamy horrified and alone.

In From the Ashes, Gabriel treats the unconscious Hope while Bellamy and Echo try to chase after the missing Octavia. Hope regains consciousness, but terrified of Gabriel and lacking her memory, runs off while Bellamy is abducted by invisible people. Catching up with Hope, Echo and Gabriel learn that she has a message telling Hope to trust Bellamy. Though confused by Hope's amnesia, Gabriel remembers that Octavia also had no memory after coming out of the Temporal Anomaly and that Hope only had her memory on Sanctum while the Anomaly had engulfed them. The three team up together to chase Bellamy's kidnappers, quickly realizing that the people are not trying to kill them.

Making their way close to the Anomaly, Gabriel realizes that they are going to fall under the influence of the Red Sun toxin and takes the anti-toxin to avoid this. With the particulates in the air showing where the cloaked people are, Gabriel urges Echo to shoot and after some hesitation due to her own hallucinations, she does so. Examining the three bodies, Gabriel discovers that the kidnappers are all human. One, still alive but wounded, tries to kill Hope based on orders to capture Gabriel and Echo and kill Hope on sight. However, Echo quickly shoots the man dead.

Gabriel realizes from the lessening noise in the area that the Anomaly is being closed by the kidnappers. Unwilling to abandon Bellamy, Echo insists on pursuing them through, but Gabriel warns that they must go together as being even seconds apart could result in them arriving months apart from each other. Hand in hand, Gabriel, Echo and Hope jump into the Anomaly together just before it closes behind them.

In The Garden, the three emerge from the Anomaly underwater on Skyring and discover that Hope's memory has returned. Hope leads Gabriel and Echo to the cabin she lived in with Octavia and Diyoza, explaining that the Disciples used the Bridge as she calls the Anomaly to continue on to Bardo. As Hope explains that time dilation has caused centuries to pass for Skyring since she left, Gabriel finds a doll and is disturbed by its monstrous look. Hope leads Echo and Gabriel to an Anomaly Stone hidden under the cabin, but discovers the note containing the code for Bardo has been washed off, preventing them from following the Disciples. Gabriel attempts to restore the message using charcoal, but fails.

Stranded on Skyring, the three discover that the Disciples have been using it as a prisoner for their unbelievers. Discovering one that the Disciples will come back for in five years, Hope tells the others that they must survive on the planet and keep the man alive until then. Hope explains to Gabriel that the Anomaly is actually an ancient transit system leading from Sanctum to Skyring and then from Skyring to Bardo. The code Octavia had entered was Hope's unique biometric code which pulled her through to Sanctum while Hope had injected Octavia with a locater tag, not stabbed her, so that Octavia would be pulled through the Anomaly in the other direction as per a deal she made with the Disciples leader Anders. Searching for the prisoner, Orlando, they discover that he dug up several corpses, including that of Hope's friend Dev, in order to have some company in isolation. Gabriel is surprised to recognize one of the corpses as that of Doctor Colin Benson, a friend of his from the Eligius III colony mission. As a result, Gabriel realizes that Skyring is actually Planet Beta from the Eligius III mission.

Recovering Colin's Memory Drive, Gabriel leads them back to the cabin to review his friend's memories for information. When Gabriel removes a Mind Drive from his computer tablet, Echo realizes that it belongs to Josephine Lightbourne and Gabriel explains that he had to be sure that Josephine was really gone. After his computer fixes some corruption on the Memory Drive, Gabriel is surprised to see that the recording starts with Becca Franko who he had a crush on. Becca expresses envy for Colin's chance to explore Skyring, preferring Planet Beta over Russell Lightbourne's choice of Alpha due to finding time dilation "sexy as hell". Gabriel realizes from Becca's comments that the five Eligius III worlds are in close proximity to a black hole though Skyring is further out, explaining why time passes faster on Skyring than on Sanctum or the other worlds. Gabriel suspects that the presence of the Anomaly on two of the worlds chosen for the mission is not a coincidence and suggests that Bardo is another of the Eligius III colony worlds, the Disciples are the descendants of another of the mission teams that settled that world and that the race that created the Anomaly were also searching for a new home as the Anomaly would've provided them the perfect means to search without having to use spaceships or cryo like the people from Earth had to do.

Fascinated by Colin's Memory Drive, Gabriel becomes engrossed in studying his friend's research as Echo and Hope leave him to it. When Echo returns, Gabriel reveals that he has learned that unlike Mission Team Alpha, Mission Team Beta, aside from Colin, died when their transport ship crashed on Skyring, preventing the creation of a colony there. Colin discovered the Anomaly Stone and began studying it, attempting to figure out the code to activate it. Gabriel is convinced that if anyone could figure out the code on their own, it would be Colin who was an award-winning quantum physicist. Gabriel is confused by Colin's recitation of a poem each day as he goes to work, but finds a memory of Colin succeeding and the Anomaly, too deep underwater to dive to under normal circumstances, expanding onto the nearby shore. Leaving his computer behind, Gabriel rushes outside to alert Hope and Echo of his discovery, but when they return to write down the code, they discover that Orlando has found Gabriel's computer. Having gone insane from the isolation, Orlando destroys the computer, preventing Gabriel, Echo and Hope from getting the code from Colin's Memory Drive.

In Welcome to Bardo, Gabriel appears in a flashback to when Octavia returns to Sanctum through the Anomaly from Bardo.

In the present, Gabriel, Hope and Echo arrive on Bardo, cloaked using the Disciples' armor. After the three Disciples in the Anomaly Stone room are killed, Gabriel chides Echo, only to learn that the killer was Hope instead. Hope explains that without Orlando they don't need to take unnecessary risks, but Gabriel argues that leaving Orlando was the unnecessary risk and stops Echo from stabbing the men to ensure that they are dead. Gabriel reminds Echo and Hope that they only have 30 minutes to get to the cell block, get their people and get back to the Anomaly Stone room before shift change. However, they need to hurry as with Orlando opening the doors in their five years of practice, the best that they ever managed was 28 minutes. Gabriel points out that they need an inside man to succeed, but Hope and Echo believe that they have that in Levitt, the man who helped Hope and Octavia before and who will be in M-Cap.

As they reach M-Cap, the group is interrupted by Disciples heading to one of Anders' sermons who simply believe that Gabriel, Echo and Hope are running late. As Hope sneaks off in an attempt to assassinate Anders, Gabriel is shocked when Anders mentions that the Shepherd delievered the Disciples to Bardo using the Anomaly Stone. Gabriel explains to Echo that this means that the Disciples are not from Eligius III but instead came from Earth itself through the Anomaly. Echo talks Hope down from trying to kill Anders and the three depart once the sermon is over.

Returning to M-Cap, Gabriel, Hope and Echo discover Octavia hooked up to the machine and another scientist named Kirsch manning M-Cap instead of Levitt. Echo forces Kirsch to show them Bellamy's apparent death a week before during a failed attempt to rescue Octavia. As alarms go off since the Disciples now know the group is there, a grief-stricken and enraged Echo kills Kirsch despite Gabriel and Hope's protests that they need him as a hostage. As Echo screams in grief, Hope states that they will never find her mother now.

In The Queen's Gambit, Anders reveals Orlando's suicide to Gabriel and allows Gabriel to say a few words over his body before its sent to Nakara. Anders expresses surprise at the amount of things that Orlando apparently didn't tell the group and requests Gabriel's help with deciphering the Anomaly Stone, combining his 150 years of study with the Disciples' nearly a thousand years of work. Gabriel ultimately agrees.

Three months later, Gabriel is frustrated by the lack of success and is told that their last breakthrough was before the Disciple he is talking to is born. Clarke, Jordan, Niylah, Raven and Miller arrive through the Anomaly and Clarke is surprised to see Gabriel amongst the code-breaking team. Gabriel assures Clarke that Echo and Octavia are okay but informs her of Bellamy's apparent death.

In Anaconda, when Bill Cadogan arrives, Clarke allows the other Disciples to leave the room, but Gabriel stays. When Cadogan asks if his daughter is in the Key, Gabriel explains that the Key is the Flame, which Gabriel claims is in Clarke's head. Clarke later has him open the door so that Octavia, Echo and Diyoza can enter.

In The Flock, in a flashback to three months prior, Anders shows Octavia, Diyoza and Hope Bardo's poisonous surface and they realize that Gabriel saved them by preventing the group from going to the surface. When they ask where Gabriel is, Anders brushes off the question, stating only that Gabriel is no longer any of their concern.

In Etherea, Clarke and her friends have been given Cadogan's quarters despite the murder of Anders and their other actions due to their control over the Flame. Sitting at the table with Gabriel, Echo and Octavia, Clarke acknowledges that if the Disciples didn't believe that she has the Flame, they would be in cells. Heading for the door, Clarke states that she is going to wake the others as it's time to go back to Sanctum, but Gabriel reminds her that they are under house arrest. Aware of that fact along with the fact that their leverage will disappear the moment that she's put in front of the Anomaly Stone, Clarke announces that she's going to offer to do it as soon as the rest of her friends are safely back on Sanctum. Octavia points out that the Disciples will kill Clarke once they know the truth and Echo refuses to let Clarke sacrifice herself for them.

The door opens and Cadogan enters escorted by Doucette and armed Disciples. Clarke starts to make her offer to Cadogan, only to have him usher in a still-alive Bellamy, much to the group's shock and pleasure. The Disciples prevent Octavia from approaching Bellamy and Echo questions how it's possible since they saw him die. Octavia comments that "it's hard to keep the Blakes down" and Clarke pulls Bellamy into a hug which Cadogan allows since she has the Key. Under cover of the hug, Clarke whispers into Bellamy's ear that the Key is the Flame and that the Disciples believe that it's still in her head and orders him to say nothing. As Clarke breaks the hug, Cadogan expresses hope that Clarke is now willing to help them, stating that too much blood has already been spilled and each death is a child of Earth who won't transcend. Cadogan begins leaving to give them time to reunite while the Disciples make preparations but, to Clarke, Octavia, Echo and Gabriel's shock, Bellamy, who is now completely loyal to the Disciple cause, reveals that Clarke doesn't have the Flame and that it has been destroyed, negating Clarke's group's leverage over the Disciples.

In The Stranger, Cadogan paces around the Anomaly Stone while lamenting to Gabriel that they were so close. Gabriel starts to express understanding for how upset Cadogan is and Cadogan reminds him that the Disciples are now back to square one and randomly entering codes and accuses Gabriel of telling him that Clarke had the Key. Gabriel points out that it was actually Octavia's memories that did that and the Disciples simply didn't see when the Flame was removed from Clarke's head. Cadogan is still angry with Gabriel as Gabriel let Cadogan believe that it was still in Clarke's head. Their discussion is interrupted by the arrival of Bellamy and Gabriel comments that Bellamy looks good in white. Cadogan orders Gabriel locked up with the others and he is led away to a prison cell.

Later, after Clarke makes a deal to trade the release of her friends for leading Cadogan to the Flame, he sends everyone but Clarke, Raven and Gabriel through the Anomaly before suddenly shutting it down in order to ensure that Clarke keeps her part of the deal. Raven realizes that Cadogan didn't send them to Sanctum which Cadogan confirms and thanks Raven for demonstrating why he didn't send her with them. Gabriel explains that both he and Raven know how the Anomaly Stone works which is why Cadogan couldn't send them too. Cadogan states that Clarke's friends are safe as he promised they would be, but points out that he'd never said anything about releasing them on Sanctum. Cadogan intends to use Clarke's friends as leverage to ensure that Clarke keeps up her part of the deal and once he has the Flame and the Last War begins, they will be freed at which point each of them will be welcome to fight alongside the Disciples. Cadogan promises that even if they choose not to, the Disciples will still save them anyway. Listening to Cadogan's speech, Raven and Gabriel exchange a look.

Clarke, Cadogan, Bellamy, Doucette, Raven and Gabriel travel through the Anomaly back to Sanctum protected by Disciple helmets and are shocked by the carnage that they find waiting for them.

In Blood Giant, Gabriel approaches Sheidheda, wondering what is going on. The Dark Commander demands to know who Gabriel is and Clarke realizes that it isn't Russell. Otis introduces Sheidheda and Raven comments that they now know where his code went. The Dark Commander demands that everyone either kneel or die, but Cadogan informs him that while he normally would relish the opportunity to recruit Sheidheda's forces to the cause, he has neither the time nor the patience to do so at the moment.

On Cadogan's signal, cloaked Disciples kill the Dark Commander's Wonkru guards, allowing Raven, Indra and Clarke to rush to help the tied-up Murphy. Murphy comments that he can accept invisibility and ray guns, but he needs an explanation for Bellamy's new status. Clarke asks if Madi is safe with Gaia, only to learn that everyone else had thought that Gaia was with her. Murphy reassures Clarke that Madi is safe for now and Cadogan orders Indra restrained with Sheidheda against everyone's wishes. Cadogan points out that Indra was standing by the throne and states that the only reason she isn't dead is that she was unarmed. Sheidheda charges Cadogan, but a still-cloaked Disciple stabs him in the gut. Cadogan has a Disciple bring the palace's microphone over and the the Dark Commander that his wound is deep and Cadogan has no interest in removing Sheidheda from his throne. Cadogan proposes that the Dark Commander gives him undisturbed passage to get what he came for, meaning that Cadogan sees not a single soul on their path and in exchange, Cadogan will leave Gabriel there to treat him. Once the Disciples are gone, Sheidheda is free to "continue the debasement of our species" until he is saved along with the rest of humanity once Cadogan completes his quest although the other option is for the Dark Commander to die. With Sheidheda agreeing, Cadogan orders the others that it's time to go after the Flame.

Sheidheda and Indra are tied to a pillar together while Gabriel treats his wounds. Gabriel warns the Dark Commander that if the blade hit his kidney, there's not much that Gabriel can do for him and he doubts that the Disciples will take Sheidheda back to Bardo for treatment. Indra is pleased, commenting that its time that they let the Dark Commander find out what death is like for a second time. The Dark Commander jokes that Indra will miss him when he's gone and reassures Gabriel that Russell's death was quick. As Gabriel continues, a hallucination of Josephine appears to Gabriel. Gabriel is shocked to see Josephine who states that he doesn't look happy to see her again. Gabriel immediately becomes worried and Josephine orders him not to tell the Disciples and lie that they need bandages for her father's last body so that they can be alone. Instead, Gabriel warns the Disciples that they need the anti-toxin as Josephine's appearance means that a Red Sun Eclipse is starting. Looking at Josephine, Gabriel tells the Dark Commander and Indra that he knows because Gabriel is already feeling the effects.

Traveling to the lab, Gabriel is shocked by the state of the bones of the Primes' previous hosts which Josephine comments on. Gabriel experiences flashbacks of using Brooke to resurrect Josephine and checks the cabinet for anti-toxin while Eric Jackson asks Gabriel about Miller. Although confused about who Jackson means, Gabriel tells Jackson that Miller is fine, although he isn't on Sanctum and calls what happened a long story that they don't have time to discuss. Gabriel finds only a single dose of anti-toxin and Jackson explains that the Primes had used it in order to escape to space. With all of the ingredients present, Gabriel tells Jackson that they can make more and gives Jackson the anti-toxin. Jackson refuses it since its the only dose and he doesn't know how to make more, but after looking at Josephine, Gabriel states that he's used to working under the toxin's influence while Jackson is not and Gabriel really needs his help. Jackson takes the anti-toxin and Gabriel begins giving him instructions on how to make more. A pleased Josephine tells Gabriel that she missed him too and Gabriel orders Josephine to be quiet, confusing Jackson with his strange behavior.

As Jackson works, Josephine urges Gabriel to allow everyone else to tear each other to pieces while they retrieve the Flame. Josephine reminds Gabriel that he is a Nightblood and so can put the Flame in his head and save humanity. She points out that she wouldn't be thinking it if he wasn't and that both the Flame and the Mind Drives were created by Becca Franko and as a result, they can repair the code, drawing his attention to the computer used to fix Memory Drives, but Gabriel points out that they use different connections. Josephine reminds Gabriel of all that he has accomplished with the Mind Drives and is sure that he can rig Eligius technology to fix the Flame and solve the mystery of the Anomaly Stone. Although Gabriel is reluctant to do it for Cadogan, Josephine suggests that he do it for himself instead and that its the best way to make up for all of the things that he did to save her. Josephine reminds Gabriel that they came across the stars to save the human race and states that now is his chance.

Returning to the Great Hall, Gabriel and Jackson find the aftermath of Indra's slaughter of the Disciples and Josephine comments that they missed all of the fun. Indra chooses not to kill the Dark Commander as repayment for saving her life but to instead leave him to die of his wounds. Indra orders Jackson and Gabriel not to treat Sheidheda and both state that they weren't planning on it.

When Cadogan arrives, Gabriel asks if he has the Flame which he confirms. Josephine urges Gabriel to tell him Cadogan and Gabriel reveals that he believes that he can restore the Flame's damaged code using the Eligius computer. Gabriel explains that the computer is used to repair Memory Drives, stitching together broken strings of code, code that was created by Becca who also created the Flame. Cadogan hands Gabriel the Flame and as he hesitates, Josephine encourages him. Plugging the Flame into the computer, Gabriel tells Cadogan that if Becca's memories are still inside of the Flame, the computer will find them. The computer successfully begins repairing the Flame's code and Josephine tells Gabriel to volunteer since Cadogan will need a Nightblood host. Hesitating, Gabriel changes his mind about going through with it. Stating that humanity is the problem and apologizing, Gabriel draws a gun from his waistband and shoots the Flame, destroying it for good.

Turning his gun on Cadogan, Gabriel orders the Disciples to drop their weapons and remove their helmets. As they comply, Gabriel has Jackson give him the anti-toxin, causing Josephine's hallucination to disappear as she pleads with him not to do it as Gabriel needs her. Bellamy tells Gabriel that they need Cadogan to get their friends back, Echo and Hope too. While Gabriel is distracted by Bellamy, Doucette attempts to attack him, but he is shot and killed by Clarke. Clarke has Raven reactivate the Anomaly Stone using a Disciple helmet, but Cadogan reveals that the planet that he sent everyone else to is off-line on the Disciples' star map and only he knows the code. Clarke forces Cadogan to open the Anomaly for them and orders Cadogan to come with them. After Clarke refuses to let Bellamy join them, Raven leads Murphy, Emori, Madi, Jackson and Gabriel through the Anomaly with Indra, Cadogan and Clarke following soon afterwards.

In The Dying of the Light, Madi reveals to Cadogan that Gabriel told them all about Jordan's discovery and that its not a Last War but a test. Cadogan brushes off the revelation, although he admits that he would prefer a test over a war that would kill many of his "children."

In The Last War, after Raven and the Eligius Prisoners rescue Echo and Niylah, Indra reveals to them that Gabriel is dead.

Personality

Gabriel is a hardworking scientist who had feelings for Josephine Lightbourne. After Josephine's first death, he relentlessly pursued a way to bring her back. He eventually succeeded, using the Mind Drives, at the expense of erasing the host's previous consciousness. However, his relationship with Josephine ended when he disagreed with the Primes' ways, which he had himself helped create. He implies that Josephine is both his darkest fear and greatest desire.

While he was the primary creator of the Primes' rebirth method, he eventually became disillusioned with the Primes' philosophy. Gabriel wanted to save the Sanctum people from being killed and sacrificed. He defected from Sanctum and founded the Children of Gabriel.

His goal was to end the Primes' rebirths and he argues that "without death, life is meaningless". However, unlike many of his followers, he is opposed to killing. He spares Octavia Blake and tries to keep the Children of Gabriel from killing Rose. However, he did kill hosts while part of the Primes and he murdered Eduardo when enraged. When severely wounded by Sheidheda, Gabriel rejected medical intervention, stating that he wanted to die and was ready for it to finally come. When Gabriel's end came, he passed peacefully, his last words being "death is life."

Gabriel had mixed feelings over being resurrected himself. After his first death, Josephine brought him back because she couldn't bear to lose him. It is implied that he was on his fourth body (i.e. third host) when he defected. When that host was dying of old age, Gabriel was ready to die for good. However, one of his followers, Eduardo, brought him back using a free-born host, Xavier. Gabriel killed Eduardo in rage for murdering Xavier, since Gabriel was so close to him that treated Xavier like a son.

After his latest resurrection, Gabriel became ashamed of what he had become. Gabriel states that he dedicated himself to bringing down a system of worship of false gods, but instead became a false god all over again. He chose to lie to his followers, pretend to be Xavier, and led them to believe that that he, Gabriel, abandoned them.

Due to nearly five years of training from Orlando, Gabriel gained the knowledge and skills of a Level 12 Disciple, meaning that he has become a formidable warrior in his own right. Despite this, Gabriel is shown to retain his reticence for killing and betraying others. However, he abandoned Orlando due to a lack of time and his own interest in seeing Bardo and rescuing his friends, prioritizing it over taking a risk on trusting Orlando who would be stranded on Skyring as a result.

After arriving on Bardo, Gabriel's attitude caused his friends to repeatedly suspect that he really only cared about getting his answers in regards to the Anomaly. Rather than risk going to the surface, Gabriel went so far as to stun his friends and later joined forces with the Disciples who offered him the chance to finally get his answers, seemingly betraying everyone, despite the fact that Anders threatened to execute him if he didn't cooperate. However, like the others, this was apparently just an act to buy time as he did not inform the Disciples that Clarke no longer had the Flame in her head and sided with her group without hesitation upon their arrival on Sanctum, taking part in their secret discussions with no one suspecting his allegiances and stood guard over Bill Cadogan for them. He was also unimpressed with Cadogan's arguments about why the Disciple way was best, feeling that you can't fight for the soul of the human race with an inhuman army. Gabriel did, however, enjoy speaking with someone from his own time with whom he could share stories and have each man understand what the other was talking about.

Physical Appearance

His last host was tall and dark with tan skin with brown eyes, short black hair with small white hair spots, beard and mustache. In Season 7, he shaved the sides of his head.

His original appearance was tall and slender with brown eyes, brown hair and light tan skin.

Relationships

He was in a romantic relationship with Josephine Lightbourne, but their relationship ended when he disagreed with the Primes' own ways and defected from Sanctum. He implies that Josephine is both his darkest fear and his greatest desire. A hallucination of Josephine suggests that Gabriel keeps going to the Anomaly to see her which he doesn't deny beyond the last time as he had gone to help Diyoza and Octavia. When reunited with Josephine, Gabriel was happy to see her, but tearfully refused the idea of saving her so they could be together. After he decides to let her go, it was implied that due to his fear of Josephine's true nature and her corrupt motives, he still wanted to prevent her from harming more innocent people, even though he loved her for centuries. He was visibly upset after her EEG flatlined and remained haunted by hallucinations of her during a subsequent Red Sun Eclipse.

At some point, after abandoning Sanctum, Gabriel developed a father-son bond with a boy named Eduardo he'd rescued. Though Gabriel wished to die with his last host, Eduardo loved him too much to let Gabriel go, though Gabriel thought he'd talked Eduardo out of his plan to resurrect Gabriel through Xavier by the time he passed away. In his anger at what Eduardo did to Xavier, Gabriel killed Eduardo, for which he showed remorse while explaining the story to Diyoza and Octavia. When confronted by Xavier's sister Layla, Gabriel stated that he also loved Xavier like a son, which is implied to be the reason why he angrily killed Eduardo.

Quotes

Josephine Lightbourne: "What do you say, Gabriel? You ready for phase two?"
Gabriel Santiago: "That's what the embryos are for."
-- in Red Sun Rising
Gabriel Santiago (to Octavia): "The forest is my weapon."
-- in The Children of Gabriel
Tosh: "You're gonna shoot me now?"
Gabriel Santiago: "I'd really rather not. The rest of our unit is expecting you."
-- in The Children of Gabriel
Gabriel Santiago: "The key is a fully developed brain. Once the adult host's consciousness is gone, the mind stored in the drive uploads with ease. Now, we still have loads of tests to run, but so far, Josie's consciousness, herself, appears to be whole. In other words, Eureka. More soon."
-- in The Gospel of Josephine
Gabriel Santiago (to Octavia and Diyoza): "The harder you fight - the faster you die."
-- in The Gospel of Josephine
Gabriel Santiago (to Octavia and Diyoza): "I can wait longer than you can."
-- in The Gospel of Josephine
Gabriel Santiago (to Diyoza): "Did Russell tell you your child will be considered worthless? You don't have the blood, and neither will she. They'll call her a null. She won't be able to bear children. She'll clean toilets or volunteer to die as a guard or attend to the dead."
-- in Memento Mori
Gabriel Santiago (to Octavia about her hand): "It's not just a tremor. It's a message. The Anomaly's calling you... just like it called me."
-- in Memento Mori
Charmaine Diyoza (pointing a gun at Xavier): "You look pretty good for an old man. (to Octavia) Say hi to Gabriel."
Gabriel Santiago: "You saw the scar. I would ask about yours, but uh, the story of how you slashed your own throat was big news before we left Earth." (Gabriel begins leaving)
Charmaine Diyoza: "Where do you think your going?"
Gabriel Santiago: "To the Anomaly as planned. Time to find out what it wants with you. Oh, about the gun, if you bring it, you'll most likely kill all of us, yourself and the baby included. It's up to you."
Charmaine Diyoza (to Octavia after lowering the gun): "Come on."
-- in The Old Man and the Anomaly
Charmaine Diyoza: "How about we pass the time by you telling us how someone dedicated to the destruction of the immortal Primes took a new body? I mean dying sucks -- I get it -- but not being willing to die for your cause makes you a coward where I come from."
Gabriel Santiago: "I left Sanctum, but Sanctum didn't leave me."
Charmaine Diyoza: "What the hell does that mean?"
Gabriel Santiago: "It means I still had the Drive in my head but no one to remove it. I eventually taught someone -- Eduardo, a Null infant rescued from the Offering Grove. I loved him like a son. Unfortunately, once he learned to perform the procedure, he refused."
Charmaine Diyoza: "Why?"
Gabriel Santiago: "By then, Xavier was born. He had the blood. Eduardo believed it was a sign, a free-born host. I thought I convinced him otherwise, but when my last body died, he finally wiped Xavier and brought me back."
Josephine Lightbourne (hallucination): "He loved you too much to lose you. I know the feeling."
Gabriel Santiago: "Once I resurrected and realized what he did, I killed him in a fit of rage and assumed Xavier's identity out of shame."
Charmaine Diyoza: "No one else knew. That's why they think you abandoned them."
Octavia Blake: "They were right. He's a coward."
Charmaine Diyoza (hearing children laughing): "Did you hear that?"
Gabriel Santiago (as Octavia collapses in his arms) "Hey, hey."
Octavia Blake: "You didn't abandon your people. You were just afraid to lead them."
Gabriel Santiago: "I was trying to take down a system dedicated to the worship of false gods."
Josephine Lightbourne (hallucination): "A system you helped create."
Gabriel Santiago: "I became a false god all over again. Understand? (Octavia hums in agreement) Good. Come on. You don't have much longer, and we still got a ways to go."
-- in The Old Man and the Anomaly
Gabriel Santiago: "Welcome back. Tell me what you remember."
Octavia Blake: "Um, nothing."
Gabriel Santiago: "Nothing? Nothing at all? You followed Diyoza into the Anomaly. Come on. Think. When you came out, you were running from something. What was it?"
Octavia Blake: "I told you, I don't know."
Gabriel Santiago: "I've been waiting 150 years. Maybe you need a little help." (removes a canister from a hidden trunk)
Octavia Blake: "What is that?"
Gabriel Santiago: "Red Sun toxin, highly concentrated. Stay back."
Octavia Blake: "That's the same stuff we saw in the air on the way to the Anomaly."
Gabriel Santiago: "Good. You were paying attention. This will be much more intense than that. It's amazing stuff, really. Produced deep in the ground. It's given off by trees. It drives every living creature in Sanctum mad. They kill themselves and the moon feeds on their corpses. Josephine theorized that it's why life here never evolved beyond reptile phase. Humans weren't supposed to come, but we did. And as we do, we made improvements. Trust me, this will help you remember."
Octavia Blake: "What if there's nothing to remember? I was only gone for a few seconds."
Gabriel Santiago: "Right. And yet you came back healed. Your hair is clean, Octavia, maybe even longer. You were running toward me instead of away as if -- I don't know -- someone or something was chasing you. Look, listen to me, until tonight, no one has ever come out of the Anomaly, ok? No one. Now, I believe you were gone for much longer than just a few seconds and that you came back for a reason. I want to know where you went and why you returned. Why don't you?"
Octavia Blake: "Have you ever done this?"
Gabriel Santiago: "A long, long time ago. Russell and I used it to find out whether any trace of a host's mind remained after resurrection. The answer was no. Instead, it unlocked parts of our own minds, things we'd hidden from ourselves, answers to what our greater purpose was. His was to turn us into gods. Mine was to make sure that he couldn't."
Octavia Blake: "What's mine?"
Gabriel Santiago: "Maybe we'll find that out, too. Come on. You can trust me. I'll be monitoring you the whole time, acting as your guide, what we call an Adjuster. Once you're under, you'll want to follow signs of the Anomaly."
Octavia Blake: "Signs? What signs? (Gabriel has vanished and Octavia hears her name coming from a green glowing box) Now that's a sign. (sees a red shaking box) Red light, green light."
-- in What You Take With You
Octavia Blake: "I know what I have do now."
Gabriel Santiago: "What are you talking about? What happened inside the Anomaly?"
Octavia Blake: "I still don't know. I'm sorry."
Gabriel Santiago: "Wait. Please. I think I deserve an explanation."
Octavia Blake: "Deserves got nothing to do with it. The Anomaly gave me a second chance. And now I need to earn it."
-- in What You Take With You
Jericho (radio transmission): "Jericho to Providence. We have a prisoner that claims the Primes can now make hosts. If you're out there..." (transmission becomes indecipherable)
Clarke Griffin (radio transmission): "Gabriel, my name is Clarke Griffin. Josephine Lightbourne is in my head. If you can hear this, we're coming to you."
Gabriel Santiago: "You know her? (Octavia nods) If Josephine is in her head, then she's in all kinds of trouble."
Octavia Blake: "Then my people are, too. I have to go."
Gabriel Santiago: "What for? She's coming here. Things are about to get weird."
-- in What You Take With You
Octavia Blake: "Uh, Gabriel, your friends are here. Don't shoot. We're on the same side. Bellamy, gun down."
Nelson: "Same side, huh? He was with Josephine in the cave. (Clarke emerges) Hey, hey. It's her -- Josephine Prime. Raise your weapons."
Bellamy Blake: "No, no, no."
Nelson: "Take her down."
Octavia Blake: "Gabriel, we could use a little help." (Gabriel emerges)
Layla (removing her mask): "Xavier? (Gabriel moves into the line of fire) Xavier, brother, get out of the way."
Gabriel Santiago: "Layla, it's ok. Nelson, put the weapon down. All of you, weapons down. That's an order."
Nelson: "You don't give orders. Where's the Old Man? Layla, search the tent."
Gabriel Santiago: "The Old Man is dead. So is Xavier."
Nelson: "On your knees. (Gabriel complies and Nelson sees the Mind Drive scar) Gabriel." (Gabriel nods)
-- in Ashes to Ashes
Nelson: "Explain."
Gabriel Santiago: "I didn't want this. I loved Xavier like a son. You know that."
Layla: "Don't say his name."
Nelson: "Layla, if you can't handle this, maybe you should wait outside."
Layla: "I'm fine. I need to hear this."
Gabriel Santiago: "Eduardo brought me back without my consent."
Nelson: "Eduardo's been dead for ten years, killed by Sanctum Guards around the time the Old Man disappeared."
Gabriel Santiago: "It wasn't the Sanctum Guards."
Layla: "Ten years? He's been lying to us for ten years, letting me call him brother?"
Nelson: "He's still our leader."
Layla: "No. He's a traitor and a Prime. He could've told us the truth, but instead, he let us think we were abandoned. Now, give me back the gun and let me end this once and for all."
-- in Ashes to Ashes
Bellamy Blake: "Wait. If this is what you really want, at least wait until he delivers the bomb."
Clarke Griffin: "What are you talking about?"
Layla: "Shut up."
Bellamy Blake: "I'm talking about weaponized Red Sun toxin. Gabriel's a Nightblood. He can walk it right through the shield and deploy it. Once it's in the air, he finds our friend Raven. She'll bring the shield down for the rest of us. We use the chaos of the evacuation to rescue our people. You kill the Primes. That's how this ends."
Nelson: "It's a good plan."
Layla: "Oh, come on. You trust them just like that?"
Nelson: "No. But I will... (draws his sword) when he kills Josephine Prime."
Clarke Griffin: "I'm not Josephine."
Gabriel Santiago: "It's true. Josephine's gone. I took the Mind Drive out myself."
Layla: "He's protecting her. How much more proof that he's a traitor do we need?"
Gabriel Santiago: "No. (Nelson turns to Clarke) If you kill her yourself, I won't build you the bomb. (Nelson concedes) Good. First, we gather the toxin. There's a cave on the way to the Anomaly."
Layla: "You're not going anywhere. Neither is your long-lost friend."
Octavia Blake: "We can do it. Just tell us what to look for."
-- in Ashes to Ashes
Gabriel Santiago: "A device like this was one of the reasons I left. I wouldn't build Russell his bomb, and here I am building one for you. Never mind me. I'm rambling. Your friends should be at the cave by now. You know, it's too bad they took an anti-toxin. That is one sibling relationship that could use a good guided hallucination."
Layla: "Yeah. Be a shame if one of them was murdered before they worked it out."
Gabriel Santiago: "Layla, I'm --"
Layla: "Don't you dare apologize. This bomb. If the Primes have one, then why haven't they used it on us?"
Gabriel Santiago: "I don't know. Probably because turning us into raging killers isn't in their best interest."
Layla: "Then what's it for?"
Gabriel Santiago: "Josephine and Simone were intrigued by a pattern in the visions of those who survived being caught out in the eclipse. Despite my best efforts to stop them, they started leaving test subjects outside to study it. Now, not surprisingly, believers in the divinity of the Primes invariably reported seeing us as gods or as angels. What interested the Lightbournes more was that the aggression response of the faithful was almost always aimed at the less devout."
Clarke Griffin: "Believers killing nonbelievers."
Gabriel Santiago: "Uh-huh."
Layla: "I swear on my brother's memory, if you betray us, I will kill you." (Gabriel nods in sad acceptance)
-- in Ashes to Ashes
Clarke Griffin: "Josephine was right. This is Mount Weather all over again. That bomb won't just cause chaos. It'll cause a massacre. There has to be a better way than using a massacre as a distraction to get the shield down."
Gabriel Santiago: "Look, if you're worried about your people, they'll be fine. Put in wall restraints to fend for themselves as soon as the early warning system is triggered and evacuation begins."
Clarke Griffin: "I told you, I'm not just worried about -- the early warning system. The insects are affected by the toxin first. That's why they're in tanks all over Sanctum."
Gabriel Santiago: "I'm aware. It was my idea. What's your point?"
Clarke Griffin: "We use less of the toxin -- enough to affect the bugs but not the people. Just enough to trigger the evacuation. Can you do that?"
Gabriel Santiago: "Yes. But without the chaos, I won't have time to take the shield down. Your people will still be prisoners, and the Primes will still be Primes. We will kill some bugs, though."
Clarke Griffin: "So we take down the shield first."
Gabriel Santiago: "First, as in before the evacuation, while everyone's still at home? Look, Clarke, I don't mean to be rude, but --"
Clarke Griffin: "Josephine could do it. Think you can get your Children to let me go with you?"
Gabriel Santiago: "It's doubtful. They're not gonna like it. Neither is Bellamy."
Clarke Griffin: "We got this, Gabriel."
-- in Ashes to Ashes
Bellamy Blake: "What do you mean you're not building a bomb?"
Gabriel Santiago: "Releasing it in the water will cause it to aerosolize at a lower concentration. We'll trigger an evacuation without inducing a mass psychosis."
Clarke Griffin: "In other words, no innocent people die."
Octavia Blake: "How long until they realize there's no eclipse and turn around?"
Clarke Griffin: "Not long enough. We'll need to be inside before it starts, which means --"
Bellamy Blake: "Which means the shield needs to be down before it starts."
Octavia Blake: "Can you do that without a distraction?"
Bellamy Blake: "It wouldn't be him."
Clarke Griffin: "Bellamy, it's the only way."
Octavia Blake: "What is?"
Clarke Griffin: "I go as Josephine."
Bellamy Blake: "It's not the only way. We use the bomb as planned. Risking your life when we don't have to is just --"
Clarke Griffin: "Is how we do better. What would Monty do?"
Bellamy Blake: "Clarke, if you fail, if Russell figures out that his daughter is dead, all our people are dead, too."
Clarke Griffin: "So I won't fail."
Octavia Blake: "Bellamy, if we can spare innocent lives, we should."
-- in Ashes to Ashes
Gabriel Santiago: "Russell, this body, this man, he was someone's son, someone's brother, and he was killed for me."
Russell Lightbourne: "All the man who conquered death wants is to die. Tonight, you'll get your wish."
-- in Adjustment Protocol
Gabriel Santiago: "Your mother murdered her mother. Ironic, don't you think?"
Clarke (as Josephine): "Don't speak to me! How could I have ever loved such a traitor?"
Simone Lightbourne: "Oh, sweetheart. At least you have closure."
-- in Adjustment Protocol
Octavia Blake: "I can't let these people die, Bell."
Bellamy Blake: "Side by side, like it's meant to be."
Echo: "I guess it's time to do better."
Emori: "Kaylee Prime, at your service."
John Murphy: "Emori…"
Emori: "John, it's okay. Someone needs to stay behind and look after Miller and Jordan."
Gabriel Santiago: "Excuse me. Sorry. Kaylee was against the Adjustment Protocol, that's why they believed it when you took them all away. It has to be Daniel."
John Murphy: "Fine. But if I die, you're bringing me back."
Gabriel Santiago: "No, I'm not."
John Murphy: "Please lie to me. Being a god should be more fun than this."
-- in The Blood of Sanctum

Roan (hallucination): "Once a killer, always a killer."
Gabriel Santiago: "You just said don't move."
Echo: "Roan?"
Gabriel Santiago: "You didn't use the anti-toxin, Echo. Echo, it's not real."
Roan (hallucination): "Without Bellamy, who will you follow?"
Echo: "Shut up."
Gabriel Santiago: "Quiet."
Echo (Roan appears in her firing line): "Now he's in my shot."
Gabriel Santiago: "Shush!"
The Real Echo (hallucination): "Answer the question, Ash."
Roan (hallucination): "Without someone to follow, who are you?"
The Real Echo (hallucination): "A girl who killed her only friend and stole her name?"
Roan (hallucination): "The honorless spy who would do anything for her Queen, even betray the man she now claims to love?"
Gabriel Santiago: "Echo? Echo, it's close."
Echo (shaken): "I can do this."
Octavia Blake (hallucination): "Hope. You have to stay quiet. No matter what you hear, you stay quiet. Do you understand?" (Hope shakes her head and moves towards Octavia)
Gabriel Santiago: "Hope, Hope, Hope. It's just in your mind."
Octavia Blake (hallucination): "I promise you, Mommy and Aunty O will come back for you. Now, shh." (Octavia backs up and vanishes)
Hope Diyoza: "No, no, don't--."
Gabriel Santiago: "Stay down. Echo, they're right there. Take the shot. Now. Pull the trigger now."
Echo (to Roan and the Real Echo): "I'm sorry." (shoots the Disciples through her hallucinations)
-- in From the Ashes
Gabriel Santiago: "Listen."
Echo: "What is it?"
Gabriel Santiago: "The Anomaly. It's quieter. They're shutting it down."
Hope Diyoza: "What does that mean?"
Gabriel Santiago: "It means they can control it."
Echo: "What if it means they're taking Bellamy through and they don't want us to follow?"
Gabriel Santiago: "Let's go."
-- in From the Ashes
Echo: "It's closing!"
Gabriel Santiago: "We go through together. If we're even seconds apart, we could be separated by months. Ok?" (three walk into the Anomaly together which closes behind them)
-- in From the Ashes
Echo: "A Mind Drive? How?"
Gabriel Santiago: "Eligius III was here. We're on Planet Beta."
Hope Diyoza: "Skyring's better."
-- in The Garden
Gabriel Santiago: "Everyone on the Eligius mission got one. Becca Franko designed the Mind -- I mean Memory Drives to be a data retrieval system so the mothership crew could determine what happened if they returned to find a mission team dead, you know, like a -- like a airplane black box. Russell and I reverse-engineered the tech to hold an entire mind."
Hope Diyoza: "Wait. That'll play his memories?"
Gabriel Santiago: "Yeah."
Echo (as Gabriel removes a Mind Drive from his computer): "Josephine?"
Gabriel Santiago: "Yeah. I needed to make sure she was really gone."
-- in The Garden
Gabriel Santiago: "Becca? God, I had a crush on her."
-- in The Garden
Becca Franko: "I envy you. You are going on the greatest adventure in the history of history. Lightbourne, that pompous ass, thinks that Alpha is the one. He's afraid that Beta is too far from the black hole relative to the others, but if you ask me, time dilation is sexy as hell. You'll get to the future faster. Don't go anywhere."
Gabriel Santiago: "The black hole. Of course. That's why time is so accelerated here."
-- in The Garden
Gabriel Santiago: "Look, We all come from Earth, O.K.? A ship brought us across the stars to escape a world on fire largely thanks to people bastardizing the words of their gods."
-- in Hesperides
Gabriel Santiago: "He said the Stone delivered them."
Echo: "So?"
Gabriel Santiago: "So they weren't Eligius. There was a Stone on Earth."
Echo: "So that means Orlando didn't tell us everything."
-- in Welcome to Bardo
Bill Cadogan: "Is my daughter in the Key?"
Jordan Green: "Is your daughter in where?"
Gabriel Santiago: "The AI in Clarke's head, what you call the Flame, they call the Key."
Bill Cadogan: "Becca said that it would merge with a human mind."
Raven Reyes: "Becca?"
Clarke Griffin: "Yes. He burnt her at the stake."
Bill Cadogan: "Did Callie tell you that? You recognized my face. You know things that you couldn't know. You speak a language that she made up as a child. Calliope?"
-- in Anaconda
Gabriel Santiago: "What did I miss?"
Jordan Green: "Not much, just... that I'm a genius."
Niylah: "Jordan has a theory."
Jordan Green: "That they got it wrong. The last war isn't a war at all. If I'm right..."
Niylah: "And that's a big if."
Jordan Green: "Then it's a test. Now I'm just guessing here, but probably to be taken by whoever enters the code."
Gabriel Santiago: "One individual representing a whole species."
Niylah: "No pressure there."
Jordan Green: "You gotta admit it makes more sense than a war. Should we tell them?"
Gabriel Santiago: "No. No, no, no. No way. If there is a test to decide the fate of the human race, Bill Cadogan should not be the one to take it. Come. Show me what you -- what you mean."
-- in A Little Sacrifice
Bill Cadogan: "We were so close."
Gabriel Santiago: "Bill, I know you're upset."
Bill Cadogan: "Upset? Why would I be upset, just because we're back to square one, randomly entering codes? You told me Clarke had the Key."
Gabriel Santiago: "Actually, Octavia's memories did that. You just never saw the moment the Flame came out."
Bill Cadogan: "You let me believe it never did."
Bellamy Blake: "My Shepherd, may I have a moment?"
Bill Cadogan: "Of course. Everybody out."
Gabriel Santiago (to Bellamy): "You look good in white."
Bill Cadogan: "Lock him up with the others."
Disciple: "Let's go. Move it."
-- in The Stranger
Clarke Griffin: "What are you doing?"
Bill Cadogan: "Ensuring you keep your part of the deal."
Raven Reyes: "He didn't send them to Sanctum."
Bill Cadogan: "Correct, and thank you for demonstrating why I didn't send you with them."
Gabriel Santiago: "We know how the Stone works."
Bill Cadogan: "Also correct."
Clarke Griffin: "Where are they?"
Bill Cadogan: "They're safe as I promised they would be. I said nothing about releasing them on Sanctum."
Clarke Griffin (to Bellamy): "You knew about this?"
Bill Cadogan: "He doesn't know where they are. Only I do. I told you, Clarke, I don't trust you. I do, however, trust the love you have for your friends, and once I have the Key and the last war begins, they'll all be freed at which point each of you will be welcome to fight alongside us, and if you choose not to, well, we'll save you anyway. That is what we mean when we say, "for all mankind.""
-- in The Stranger
Josephine Lightbourne: "God, it's sexy when you get all sciency."
Gabriel Santiago: "Not now."
Josephine Lightbourne: "Why not now? Who cares about these people? Let them tear each other to pieces. All we need is the Flame. You're a Nightblood. We fix it, We put it in your head and save humanity. I know you're thinking it, or I wouldn't be. Becca Franko designed the Mind Drives and the Flame. They speak the same language. We can repair the code."
Gabriel Santiago: "Different connections."
Josephine Lightbourne: "Gabriel, you engineered Memory Drives to hold entire minds, consciousness. On Skyring, you used a damn Etch-a-Sketch to watch the Colin Benson Show. Surely you can rig some Eligius tech to pull data off the Flame. You can solve the mystery of the Stone, start the Last War-- the test, whatever."
Gabriel Santiago: "No. No. Not for Cadogan."
Josephine Lightbourne: "For you then. You've got the blood, not him. You take the test for all mankind. We level up because of you. What better way to make up for all the things, you did in this lab to conquer death, hmm? All the broken eggs it took to make this omelet. What do you say, my love? We came across the stars to save the human race. Now's your chance."
-- in Blood Giant
Sheidheda: "I saved your life, Indra. Surely that is worth something?"
Indra: "Yes it is. I don't need to kill you because you're already dead. (slashes Sheidheda's face) No one treats him."
Eric Jackson: "Wasn't planning on it."
Gabriel Santiago: "Me neither."
Indra: (in Trigedasleng) "Your fight is over."
-- in Blood Giant
Octavia Blake: "In peace, may you leave this shore. In love..."
Hope Diyoza: "No!"
Octavia Blake: "May you find the next. Safe passage on your travels until our final journey on the ground."
Gabriel Santiago (in Spanish) "Death is life."
Octavia Blake: "May we meet again."
Jordan Green, Hope Diyoza, Clarke Griffin, John Murphy, Emori, Nathan Miller and Eric Jackson: "May we meet again."

Notes and Trivia

  • He is a geneticist and has a doctorate degree in the field. He also appears to have some medical training.
    • In "Hesperides," when he comments on Orlando's physical condition, Orlando asks him if he is a doctor and Gabriel replies that he is.
  • He is considered to be a demon in Sanctum. Gabriel himself implies that he is considered one not only for his rebellion, but for destroying the embryos in particular.
    • This act caused Josephine to start Oblation.
  • He and Russell jail-broke the Mind Drive.
    • In the script, Russell also mentions that Gabriel created the mind-wiping serum used on the hosts before they implant the Mind Drive and that it took him over twenty years.
  • Even though he brought back Josephine and the others who were killed by Russell Lightbourne, during the first Red Sun eclipse, it was implied that Gabriel's experimental test was meant to resurrect those just for one time only as he refused to do any more resurrections. Despite Gabriel's refusal against killing the Hosts, it was implied that the reason why he only used the Hosts for first resurrections is because the first, official Hosts were just only the experimental embryos at the time Josephine and the others were resurrected. By the time that Sanctum grew into a new society, he refused to sacrifice any more innocent Hosts, but the Primes forced him against his will, which led to his defection from Sanctum.
    • In "The Gospel of Josephine", after Gabriel mentions that the first successful test subject for Josephine's host, was an Earth embryo 47, named Brooke, it is implied that Gabriel had experimented on 46 embryos that are failed, unsuccessful test subjects.
  • He founded the Children of Gabriel.
  • He wrote a book chronicling the effects of the Red Sun called "The Double Helix Under the Double Suns." [2]
  • Gabriel's favorite play is The Crucible, which was banned by the Primes.
  • He had a crush on Becca Franko before coming to Alpha.
  • In an unnamed date, Josephine Lightbourne mentioned that his last host must be at 95 years old. In 2281, Josephine confirms that if Gabriel was 106 by now, he'd be dead.[3]
    • That host is confirmed dead and he currently has a new host that he has had for ten years. This means that his host was age 96 when he died.
  • He is the only Prime that came alone. The others had a family member(s) come with them.
  • His original body died of cancer. His previous host died of old age.
  • Unlike the other Primes, it is unknown how many hosts Gabriel has had. Given the old age of his previous host, he likely hasn't gone through as many hosts as the other Primes who have each had upwards of six.
    • In "Adjustment Protocol," Russell states that Gabriel is in his fifth or sixth host. However, Russell was unsure of the exact number and Gabriel didn't offer it to him. This is because Gabriel was resurrected in a new host, after his previous host left Sanctum and died of old age.
  • At the end of "Matryoshka," Gabriel spoke in Spanish saying "death is life".
    • In his original body, he was Colombian. Hence, his knowledge of the Spanish language. His grandmother was also from Colombia.
  • On Earth, before heading to Alpha, he heard the news of Charmaine Diyoza and her terrorist attacks, including her fight against the U.S. Government, which possibly inspires Gabriel to form his own rebellion and militia group, the Children of Gabriel, against the Primes.
  • Both of Gabriel's known resurrections were because someone he loved couldn't let him go.
  • Gabriel is one of three characters to have multiple episodes named after them, the others being Echo and Clarke.
  • Gabriel is the fourth main character to debut after first season. (Echo was the first, Roan was the second and Jordan Green was the third).
  • As of "Hesperides," Gabriel is considered a Level 12 Disciple thanks to the training he received over 4 years and 8 months from Orlando.
  • Gabriel is the eleventh main character to die in The 100. The ten preceding ones are Wells Jaha, Finn Collins, Lincoln, Roan, Jasper Jordan, Thelonious Jaha, Monty Green, Marcus Kane, Abigail Griffin and Bellamy Blake.
    • Gabriel is the second major character to have died in Season Seven. The first is Bellamy.
    • Gabriel is the 4th major character to have died the same season their actor was given a starring role. The first was Callie Cartwig, then Wells Jaha, then Roan.
  • With Gabriel's death, all of the Primes are dead or dormant in the case of Ryker Desai, effectively bringing the Primes to a permanent end. His death also leaves Luca as the only survivor of the Children of Gabriel.
  • Despite his body being left in the rec room in "A Sort of Homecoming," there is no sign of it in "The Dying of the Light" while Raven, Murphy and Jackson are searching the room for the Anomaly Stone and with not enough time having passed for them to have moved Gabriel's body between episodes.
