— Ethan to Geoff Hardy [src] |
Ethan Hardy was a recurring character in the fourth and fifth seasons. Beckham Skodje portrayed Ethan at age five and six, while St. John Myers portrayed Ethan at age twelve. He debuted in "The Chosen".
Ethan was a young member of the Sky People and the son of Geoff Hardy.
Early Life[]
Ethan was born on the Ark to Geoff Hardy and an unknown mother, who is dead.
He survived the descent to Earth and lived at Arkadia with his father.
Throughout the Series[]
He is first mentioned in We Will Rise, where his father, Geoff Hardy was helping get Arkadia ready for Praimfaya.
In The Chosen, he somehow got separated from his father when the Grounders were making the Sky People leave their rooms. His father soon found him by shouting his name and they shared a moment and hugged with Geoff telling him, "It's okay."
Later, Geoff comes to Thelonious Jaha and asks the former chancellor to care for Ethan in case his name was not chosen in the lottery. However, Jaha brushes him off saying "A child should not lose his father". Jaha later does as Geoff had asked him to do after Marcus Kane and Jaha use knock out gas to calm the crowd. A Grounder man goes to take Ethan away to die, and Marcus tells the Grounder all children stay. Jaha picks Ethan up and holds him.
In a flashback in Red Queen, Thelonious Jaha and Ethan are in the cafeteria eating with Marcus Kane, when Ethan asks "Uncle Theo" for seconds. Marcus offers Ethan his food, however Thelonious says that Ethan must learn to eat like the others and that Uncle Marcus needs to eat. After Ethan and Thelonious finish eating they start to leave the cafeteria when Kara Cooper tries to keep them there. Thelonious doesn't stay and goes back to the bunks and is reading Ethan a bedtime story, when Niylah comes to Thelonious and asks him if he can fix her cart's wheel. As Jaha finishes, the Grounders enter the bunks and begin ordering the Sky People to "Get Up". Thelonious orders Ethan and Niylah to hide under a bed. Thelonious is attacked by a Grounder and Octavia Blake stops him from killing Thelonious. She asks him to help her and he has Ethan stay with Nathan Miller, Ethan protests and says he wants to go with him.
Six years later, he is with Gaia watching a fight.
In Acceptable Losses, he trains with Madi and the other Wonkru apprentices. He attacks her when he finds a weak spot and when Gaia asks him why did he did it, he answers she's not Wonkru. Later, he is matched with Madi again to fight in front of Octavia. He seems sure to win as he beats her on the first round, but she then decides to show her real skills and beats him two times easily.
In The Dark Year, he marches toward Shallow Valley with the rest of Wonkru.
In Damocles (Part 1), he was entering the gorge when was shot by one of the Eligius IV prisoners. The sniper may have been aiming for Octavia, the leader of Wonkru, who was walking beside him on his left side.In Sanctum, when Octavia confronts Marcus Kane over the lives lost due to his betrayal, she blames him for Ethan in particular. Octavia reminds Kane that Ethan was the first one to die during the massacre in the gorge.
Personality[]
Not much is known about his personality when he was five years old in season 4, but it was shown that he loved his father. In a flashback in season 5, it is shown that he built a close relationship with Jaha after his father dies.
After the six years jump, Ethan was one of the Wonkru novitiates. He is shown to be close to Gaia who instructs him in proper behavior and in combat. He is more aggressive, which is evident from his cheering the death matches in "Red Queen" and from his training with Madi in "Acceptable Losses". Ethan is loyal to Wonkru and picks on Madi because he does not consider her to be Wonkru. However, later, after Madi beats him in a training session, he seems to start to accept her, showing that he has a softer, less aggressive side.
Physical Appearance[]
At five years old, Ethan was small, skinny, with short blonde hair, blue eyes, and a fair complexion.
At twelve, Ethan was more well built and had short brown hair, hazel eyes, and a somewhat fair complexion.
Relationships[]
Geoff Hardy[]
He and his father, Geoff Hardy, shared a close bond. Geoff is among the 364 Sky People left outside the bunker as part of the Second Culling.
Thelonious Jaha[]
Jaha became Ethan's caretaker after his father's death. They shared a father-son like bond, with Ethan calling him "Uncle Theo" and relying upon him heavily.
Octavia Blake[]
Before he died, Jaha makes Octavia promise to take care of Ethan. Octavia cared for Ethan deeply and was particularly angry at Marcus Kane's betrayal leading to Ethan's death, naming Ethan in particular when confronting Kane over his actions.
Madi[]
Ethan meets Madi in "Acceptable Losses". At first, he picks on and mocks Madi because he does not consider her to be Wonkru. When she is on the ground, he offers his hand, only to retract it when she moves to accept, making the other Wonkru novitiates laugh and Gaia to scold him. Later, when Madi beats him in a training session in front of Octavia, Ethan seems to be impressed by Madi's skills. He doesn't take her hand at first when she offers to help him up, but then he does.
