The Ark needs unity now more than ever.
— Diana to Chancellor Jaha [src]

Diana Sydney was a recurring character in the first season. She was portrayed by cast member Kate Vernon and debuted "Contents Under Pressure". Diana was a former Chancellor of the Ark, who plotted to seize power back from Jaha. She served one of the main antagonists of Season One, alongside Anya.

After the Culling, Diana painted herself as a voice of the 'lower classes'. She regained a seat on the council, and later with her supporters stole the Exodus ship to get to Earth. However, during the launch, it had an open service hatch, and that coupled with Mount Weather's jamming frequency, caused the dropship to crash. She and everyone onboard died in the resulting explosion.

Early Life

Diana was born on the Ark. At some time in her adult life, she became the Chancellor of the Ark and she lost the position to Thelonious Jaha after he beat her in an election. After that, Diana organized a coup to try and usurp power by gathering a few guards loyal to her, including Commander Shumway and Lieutenant Graco, to overthrow the current administration and be leader again. She tasked Commander Shumway with assassinating Jaha, a task he handed down to Bellamy Blake, but Jaha ultimately survived.

Throughout the Series

In Contents Under Pressure, Diana visits Jaha after Raven Reyes' Ark-wide broadcast that the Delinquents are still alive. Jaha immediately suspects that she is there to talk about Abby Griffin's vacant Council seat and refuses, but Diana insists that he really needs to hear what she has to say. After commenting on how different the quarters seem from when she was Chancellor, Diana tells Jaha that her people, the workers, are coming to her with dangerous questions due to the belief that Jaha's administration let people die in the Culling when there was another way. Diana warns that if he doesn't get in front of the rumors, things will fast get ugly and that is what she would do in his position. Jaha reminds Diana that she is not in his position because his people voted her out.

Turning to leave, Diana spots Jaha's computer and realizes that he's activated Project Exodus and congratulates him on becoming the man to lead the Sky People back to the ground. Jaha points out that he can't discuss it with her, but Diana insists that she is there as an ally and knows that he faces "unimaginably difficult" decisions when implementing Project Exodus. Diana feels that the Ark needs unity now more than ever and hopes that Jaha can trust her enough to help him with that. Jaha silently considers her words.

At a meeting of the station representatives, Jaha explains everything that has happened and how the Earth is confirmed to be inhabitable for them to return to, justifying the deaths in the Culling as having bought them the time that they need to reach the ground. Cuyler Ridley, who lost his wife in the Culling, challenges Jaha's truthfulness and inability to understand the pain that he has caused. Jaha emotionally reveals that he lost his son on Earth and Diana steps up, stating that she'd had no idea and offering Jaha her apologies for his loss.

Addressing the gathered people, Diana states that Jaha has sacrificed as much as everyone, but Jaha's loss like all of theirs was not in vain as Wells died learning that Earth is survivable. Diana tells Ridley that because of his wife's sacrifice, his daughter will get to the ground. Ridley insists that they can't trust Jaha and his people, so Jaha tells him to trust Diana instead. Repeating Diana's words to him about needing unity now more than ever, Jaha offers her Abby's now-vacant Council seat which she accepts. As everyone applauds, Diana exchanges a nod with Ridley, suggesting that they had planned the whole thing.

Later, Diana is sworn in as a member of the Council. Jaha states that as a former Chancellor, no one knows more about Project Exodus than Diana. Jaha reveals that while the Sky People going to the ground, not all of them will be making the trip with Diana adding that it was a problem that they were supposed to have a hundred years to fix. Jaha explains that they have 2,237 people on the Ark and they only have enough dropships to carry 700. "We are on the Titanic and there aren't enough lifeboats," Jaha solemnly reveals to the shocked Council.

In Day Trip, Diana takes part in a Council meeting where Jaha and Kane discuss options with Clarke Griffin over video chat for the Delinquents surviving the approaching winter. After they direct Clarke to an old supply depot for potential supplies and shelter for the winter, Diana objects, stating that Project Exodus is underway and the Delinquents should remain in their camp until the first dropship launches. However, Jaha knows that even if everything goes off without a hitch, the Delinquents will die from exposure before relief arrives. Jaha then dismisses the rest of the Council in order to speak with Clarke alone.

After Bellamy exposes Commander Shumway as the person who hired him to kill Jaha, Diana visits him in his cell, relieving Shumway who thought that he was about to be floated. Diana informs Shumway that "it won't come to that," and Lieutenant Graco enters and stuns Shumway with a shock baton as Shumway protests that he only did what Diana asked him to. At Diana's nod, Graco breaks a light fixture and slits Shumway's wrists with a shard of glass from it, murdering Shumway and making it look like a suicide.

In Unity Day, Diana is seen at the Unity Day celebration talking to Abby. She remarks that Jaha had cut his speech short and that she'd helped him with it. Diana then leaves and a bomb goes off, killing 6 people and injuring a few others. Kane and Abby suspect that she was responsible for the bomb but she tricks Kane by telling him Cuyler Ridley is responsible and sends Kane to interrogate him. She later goes to the Exodus ship and has some of her followers to knock out the guards and close the ship and tells them to search the ship for any traitors. Jaha arrives with reinforcements and attempts to open the door to prevent the ship from launching. Diana explains to the 'reinforcements' that there were not enough dropships to carry everyone on the Ark, which convinces Red, a mechanic to get onto the dropship removing his jack from the door in the process. She then launches the ship crippling the Ark, due to it being connected to the main power grid.

Her ship is then seen shooting down to the ground. It descends too quickly and doesn't deploy parachutes. The Exodus ship then crashes near a mountain and Diana and everyone on board the ship are killed in the resultant explosion.

In I Am Become Death, the Delinquents check out the crash site and discover no survivors.

In Fog of War, Raven Reyes discovers that Mount Weather crashed the Exodus dropship and thus killed Diana and her followers.

Diana showcased very manipulative behavior and attitudes towards others. She was very secretive and willing to kill for her cause. Being the former Chancellor she knew more than the average citizen, especially about secret Ark programs.

Diana presents herself as someone who would look after the "lower class" citizens and the voice of reason. This however, is a facade and in truth, she is a manipulative, self-serving, power hungry person who only cares about herself. After she lost the election she plotted to take the position back by force and didn't care who got hurt in the process, including her own followers and innocent civilians. This is shown after the Unity Day bombing when she was unconcerned about the innocent lives lost and only says they should have made a bigger bomb. She was even willing to manipulate the Council into making decisions she knew the people would be upset with so she could paint herself in a more favorable light. Even at her best, Diana was condescending and ignored her own faults while pointing out the faults of others. She called out Jaha to their people about the exodus ships when Diana herself knew about it too when she was chancellor.

Physical Appearance

Diana had blonde hair with dark roots. She was of average height and had light hazel/green eyes.

Thelonious Jaha

Chancellor Jaha and Diana seemed to disagree often, even though they respected each other. Oftentimes, Diana liked to brag or act like she was better than him. People seemed to like Diana more than Jaha, which sometimes made Jaha frustrated and jealous. In Day Trip, it was revealed that she was the one who orchestrated the attempt on Jaha's life.

Commander Shumway

Shumway was presumably one of Diana's followers. Before he was to be floated for the conspiracy to assassinate Chancellor Jaha, Diana had Shumway killed instead and staged it to look like a suicide.

Abigail Griffin

Diana and Abby seem to have a semi-professional relationship. Diana apologized to Abby for taking her Council seat, which Abby forgave. After the Unity Day explosion, Abby mentions that Diana left the celebration early, which raises her suspicions. Diana later offers Abby a chance to go to Earth to see Clarke. However, Abby instead tries to help Jaha so Diana has her guards shock-baton Abby.

Thelonious Jaha: "You are the station reps of the Ark and I don't blame you for losing faith in me. I kept the Ark's oxygen crisis from you. I lied about sending the 100 to the ground. But you can tell your stations that the deception ends here. You now know the whole truth... but there is one truth that stands above all the rest. Earth... is survivable. And the 320 souls that sacrificed their lives in the Culling gifted the rest of us the time that we need to make it to the ground. Mankind is going home."
Cuyler Ridley: "How do we know that's everything? How do we know you're not still lying to cover up for the Culling?"
Thelonious Jaha: "This afternoon, I declassified the minutes of all Council meetings."
Cuyler Ridley: "Is that supposed to make us feel better? All those people died for nothing."
Thelonious Jaha: "Please. We're all in pain."
Cuyler Ridley: "No. No, you don't get to do that. You pushed the button that sucked the air out of my wife's lungs. You caused our pain. You know nothing about how we feel."
Thelonious Jaha: "I lost my son!"
Diana Sydney: "I didn't know that. I'm sorry. My friends, please. Chancellor Jaha has sacrificed as much as any of us. But his loss, just like all of yours, is not in vain. The Chancellor's son died finding out that Earth is survivable. And because of your wife's sacrifice, your daughter will get to come down to the ground. That is not in vain."
Cuyler Ridley: "Ma'am, we can't trust them. I'm sorry."
Thelonious Jaha: "Then trust her. As of this morning, there's an open seat on the Council. Mine to fill until the next election. We need unity now... more than ever. What do you say, Diana?" (Diana nods and amidst the cheers, exchanges nods with Ridley)
