611 Bone marrow transplantation

Bone Marrow Transplantation is a procedure in which a bone marrow is removed from one body and placed in the body of a recipient.

History[]

The Mountain Men, led by President Cage Wallace, used the Delinquents for Bone Marrow Transplantation as part of the Harvest Project to make them immune to radiation, in order to walk outside on the ground. This allowed Cage and Carl Emerson to survive the fall of the Mountain, although both were subsequently killed by Lincoln and Clarke Griffin.

In the wake of the Praimfaya, Abby and Jackson begin using a Nightblood named Luna for Bone Marrow Transplantation in attempt to create more Nightblood serum to survive the Second Nuclear Apocalypse. Clarke Griffin became the first Sky Person to become a Nightblood, though the effectiveness remained untested and unconfirmed until Clarke survived Praimfaya because of her Nightblood.

In the year 2181, Russell Lightbourne and the other Primes tried to do bone marrow transplantation to recreate Nightblood, but it failed, due to not knowing the formula. Many years later, in 2281, to avoid being executed, Clarke's friends convinces Russell to spare them so that they will use the Bone Marrow Transplantation to create more Nightblood to resurrect the Primes. Russell then agrees. As the procedure continues, they begin using Madi Griffin as a Nightblood donor to create more serum. Echo becomes the first red-blooded Grounder to become a Nightblood. Abby injected herself with Nightblood to become a donor to protect Madi. John Murphy and Emori both became two Nightbloods while posing as Kaylee Lee and Daniel Lee.

Throughout the Series[]

In Long Into an Abyss, Dr. Lorelei Tsing realizes from studying Keenan Mykulak's blood after Tsing and Cage Wallace's experiments on her that the bone marrow of the Sky People could make the Mountain Men immune to the deadly radiation that keeps them trapped in Mount Weather. There are 382 residents in Mount Weather and only 47 Delinquents, meaning that after eight bone marrow operations each, the Delinquents would be dead. She tells Cage that he needs to convince Dante Wallace to move forward with the plan. Despite Dante refusing, Tsing extracts Harper McIntyre's bone marrow behind the President's back.

In Coup de Grâce, after being alerted by Jasper Jordan to Harper and Monty Green going missing, Dante stops Tsing as she extracts more bone marrow from Harper. However, this prompts Cage to pull a coup against his father and have Dante arrested, taking control of Mount Weather for himself.

In Rubicon, as Carl Emerson frantically tries to make it back to Mount Weather before his oxygen runs out, he's saved by Cage who is now able to walk freely on the ground due to receiving the bone marrow transplant, thus proving that it works. Tsing takes the bone marrow of a Delinquent, killing him, and gives it to Emerson and later takes and drains another Delinquent of their bone marrow. Before Tsing can take anyone else, Bellamy Blake irradiates Level 5, killing Tsing and the Mount Weather Guards who were about to help her take Jasper and buying them some time. Despite this and Dante's protests, Cage gives his father the bone marrow transplant, telling him that it will kick in at 48 hours.

In addition, Whitman, the spotter for the missile attack in Tondc, has also received the treatment.

In Resurrection, despite the Delinquents killing several guards, they are able to capture Fox for extraction, but she's rescued by Bellamy. Cage then tries using Maya Vie to force their surrender, but Bellamy and Vincent are able to save her while the Delinquents go into hiding with the Resistance Against Harvest Project to prevent the Mountain Men from being able to use their bone marrow.

At the same time, Clarke, Lincoln and Lexa locate and kill Whitman. The fact that he was not wearing a Hazmat suit alerts Clarke to what the Mountain Men are doing.

In Blood Must Have Blood (Part 1), Cage announces to Mount Weather that Tsing had found a cure for them in the Delinquents' bone marrow to rally the civilians to help him find the remaining 44 Delinquents on the run. During the battle that follows, Raven Reyes and Kyle Wick blow up the dam that supplies power to Mount Weather, trapping the residents who have not received the bone marrow transplant on Level 5.

Eventually, at Dante's suggestion, the Mountain Men make a deal with Lexa to trade her people being held captive for her abandoning the Sky People. The guards are able to capture all of the escape Delinquents aside from Monty and Jasper as well as Raven and Wick at the dam. Picking up a small group of Sky People retreating to Camp Jaha, Cage sends a team to capture them for more people to harvest.

In Blood Must Have Blood (Part 2), the Mountain Men have resumed taking bone marrow from the Delinquents and the captured Sky People, killing the people that they are drilling on. However, Emerson reveals that he is the only Mount Weather Guard left alive who has taken the treatment as the rest of the guards who had it were killed fighting the Grounder army and capturing the Sky People.

As the Mountain Men drill into Raven, Clarke, Bellamy and Monty take over the abandoned Command Center with a captive Dante. Clarke tries to force Cage to stop, killing Dante and threatening to irradiate Level 5, but he refuses, replacing Raven with Clarke's mother despite Kane's protests and offers to have the Sky People donate their bone marrow instead. With Abby and Octavia both in danger, Clarke and Bellamy irradiate Level 5, stopping the drilling and killing all of the Mountain Men. The only survivors are Cage and Emerson due to them having received the bone marrow transplant, but Cage is killed shortly thereafter by Lincoln.

In Gimme Shelter, Abby discovers that a transplant of Luna's bone marrow could potentially be used to give Nightblood to people after the original plan to go into space to recreate the original serum proves to be impossible. However, Abby and Eric Jackson had originally decided not to do anything with it as the only way to know if it works is to test it on somebody. After the Rock Line Thief is captured, Abby injects him with the bone marrow as a test subject.

In God Complex, the Nightblood test on the Grounder who received Luna's bone marrow proves to be a failure with the man dying when they increase the radiation. Abby and Jackson are eventually able to determine what apparently went wrong and how to fix it. When Luna refuses to give up any more of her bone marrow, Roan is forced to knock her unconscious so that it can be taken by force. However, rather than injecting Emori as their test subject, Clarke injects herself with the bone marrow, becoming a Nightblood. Due to her visions of a radiation-burned Clarke, Abby smashes the testing chamber, leaving the treatment untested.

In Praimfaya, it's revealed that the bone marrow transplant was successful in turning Clarke into a Nightblood when it allows her to survive the Second Nuclear Apocalypse.

In Matryoshka, as Russell Lightbourne is about to burn Abby, Jackson, Raven, Gaia, Nathan Miller, Emori and Murphy at the stake, Murphy gets the idea to use bone marrow transplants to create new Nightblood hosts for the Primes. Russell reveals that the Primes had tried bone marrow transplantation 100 years before, but it had failed. However, Murphy and Raven tell him that Abby knows how to do it from turning Clarke into a Nightblood. In exchange for her people being released, Abby agrees to make Nightblood for the Primes and Russell agrees, telling her to use Madi Griffin as the donor. Russell gives them 24 hours, or he'll execute the group.

In Ashes to Ashes, Abby successfully creates Nightblood from Madi's bone marrow and Russell orders Ryker Desai to test it out on Echo before mind wiping her to become a host. The transplant is successful, but Echo is rescued by Gaia and Miller before she can be mind wiped.

In Adjustment Protocol, due to the strain that the bone marrow extractions is taking on Madi, Abby injects herself with a dose of the marrow, turning herself into a Nightblood and the donor for the remaining doses. The Nightblood marrow is given to Murphy, Emori, Jade, Bryson and Sierra who, aside from Murphy and Emori, become the hosts of the Primes. Abby is mind wiped by Russell to serve as Simone Lightbourne's new host.
